Attempt to hike the summit of South Sister with UREC on Sept. 23-24

Summiting South Sister is a true bucket list item! Located out in the Three Sisters Wilderness, hikers get to experience the incredible central Oregon landscape that is completely unlike the scenery here in the valley.

In a challenging (but very rewarding) trip taking place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 23-24, we’ll attempt to hike and summit South Sister, the tallest volcano of the Three Sisters. The trip is planned and facilitated by highly trained and experienced outdoor recreation trip leaders that are also George Fox students. We will provide the training, equipment, transportation, food, and more! All you need to do is bring yourself!

Hadlock has special hours on Serve Day this week

Be sure to sign up for a Life Group this fall

The Office for Spiritual Life is hosting Life Groups this fall (the weeks of Sept. 18 through Nov. 6). These are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together weekly (for eight weeks) for prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Sessions last from 60 to 90 minutes.

Life Groups through the Office for Spiritual Life will also be SPIL-credit eligible. To sign up, please fill out this form by Thursday, Sept. 14. And feel free to check out our Instagram posts to see descriptions of each Life Group’s theme or topic of study.

Hear President Baker speak at Peace Fair on Sept. 16

George Fox President Robin Baker will speak at the unveiling of Newberg’s new dynamic wind-powered sculpture on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.).

The ceremony will happen shortly after 10 a.m. in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Newberg 5K Run/Walk for Peace. The run is in memory of Denise Bacon, a longtime Rotarian and Newberg city council member.

There will also be a Peace Fair with fun activities for kids and adults from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Peace Fair is open to families free of charge. For information about the 5K run/walk, which begins at 9 a.m., email Michelle Colvin at colvinwifey@gmail.com.

Come join us for The Burn, a 12-hour night of worship and prayer! The Burn is organized by students, for students. Come join together with your peers at 9 p.m. next Friday, Sept. 15, in Canyon Commons as we begin our time, and feel free to worship with us until the sun rises on Saturday morning, until 9 a.m.

Pedestrian path is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday

The pedestrian path between Klages and the Murdock Library and continuing alongside Edwards Hall off of Crisman Crossing is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 12. This link shows the red construction fencing layout. (This diagram can only be viewed by George Fox employees and students.)

To walk from Crisman Crossing to the quad, use the sidewalk along the south side of the Klages Center, or pass through the double doors of the Klages Center. Please contact the plant services office at plantservices@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Donate a new pillow and/or blanket for Serve Day

For Serve Day, the spiritual life team is happy to partner with Bybee Lake Hope Center in Portland, which provides transitional housing to support Portland metro community members experiencing houselessness.

This year, a large group of students will be putting together welcome kits for people moving into their new space at the Hope Center. We need you to help by donating 75 new and unused pillows and blankets. Please drop them by the SpiL/Barclay House by 5 p.m. this Monday, Sept. 11. Anything that gets donated will be matched and doubled by the spiritual life department.

Volunteer with SOLVE tomorrow to help protect local waterways

Did you know that less than 1% of the world’s water supply is available as drinking water? Learn more on this fact here and here.

In light of that, this a reminder about the Stewards of Sustainability Club’s first event of the year tomorrow (Saturday)! As part of a statewide effort to clean up our beaches and rivers, SOLVE is hosting a volunteer event to remove litter and replace invasive plants with native ones in one of Newberg’s natural spaces. We would like to join in their effort to protect our local waterways!

We will be meeting in front of the Roberts building’s main doors at 8:40 a.m. to walk over together, and expect to be back by 11:45 a.m. You can also meet us there at 346 Corinne Dr., in Newberg. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Take advantage of youth enrichment classes this fall

The Department of Language and Literature is excited to announce a new season of youth enrichment classes through George Fox.

This year, we’re thrilled to offer three Spanish beginners classes for elementary and middle schoolers, one Spanish advanced class, and an English creative writing class for middle schoolers. They are scheduled to take place Monday and Wednesday afternoons in Minthorn Hall.

We are currently training and preparing our students in the department to teach these fun, engaging, and intellectually interactive classes to the kids in our Newberg community. Check out Foster Parents Night Out and Little+Big Bruin info night Sept. 20

Interested in helping out families and children? Come volunteer for Foster Parents Night Out (FPNO) and/or Little+Big Bruins!

FPNO is a monthly event in which foster parents drop off their children and volunteers play with them for the evening. Little+Big Bruins is a mentorship program in which George Fox students are paired with an elementary or middle school student in the Newberg School District and build a relationship with them.

If you are interested in either of these programs, please come to the info/training night at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Canyon Commons 101-102. You do not have to be committed to come to the info/training night, but it is required to participate.

Nursing majors: Join one of two town hall meetings on Oct. 18

Calling all freshman and sophomore nursing majors! The College of Nursing is hosting two town hall meetings this semester. At these sessions, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Review the curriculum and compliance requirements
  • Discover pre-nursing success strategies
  • Meet your CAP coach
  • Learn about direct and general admit options

We will be hosting both sessions on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The first meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the Roberts Center (Room 170), and the second will be at 5 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.
