Friendsview Retirement Community is having a huge garage sale on Friday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Friendsview Retirement Community. Everything is half price for George Fox students. On Saturday, Oct. 4, the garage sale takes place from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but after noon everything is free!

Art show ‘From Slaves to Matriarchs’ opens Thursday

The university community is welcome to an opening reception for artist Andries Fourie and the show “From Slaves to Matriarchs.” The reception is scheduled from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Minthorne Gallery. It will be preceded by an artist talk from 4:10 to 5 p.m. in Hoover 105.

The show is a site-specific installation that explores the influence of East and Southeast-Asian slave women on contemporary South African culture. The show will be up in the Minthorne Gallery through Friday, Oct. 24.

Winter and Summer Serve applications are open

Winter and Summer Serve applications are open!

Winter Serve trips are week-long trips Jan. 3-10. This year we are going to Portland with HomePDX; Twin Rocks; Puyallup, Wash., with the One Another Foundation; and Oklahoma with Forward Edge to work with tornado relief. Applications to be a student leader are also available. If you have been on a Serve Trip before, consider joining a team as a student leader!

Summer Serve (Spilgrimages) applications are also open! These are two- to three-week trips in May and June. This year we are going to Romania/Moldova with Word Made Flesh; Haiti with Forward Edge to work with earthquake relief; China with Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends; Kenya with Open Arms International; and Nicaragua with Association for Baptists for World Evangelism.

Bon Appetit serves Latin dishes in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

ARC hosts writing workshop this Thursday in Hoover 105

Need help with your writing? This Thursday, Oct. 2, the Academic Resource Center will host a session, “Correcting Common Writing Mistakes,” from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

Event Description
When we write, we communicate – sometimes more than we intend to. Professors are primarily concerned with what you are thinking and how you have engaged with the ideas in the course, but they also have a hard time ignoring grammatical errors. This workshop will help you understand, identify, and correct the top 10 grammatical errors that annoy professors the most.

Seeking Overnight Ambassadors and Floor Leaders

Overnight Ambassadors would host prospective students overnight in the dorms throughout the week and for larger events. Floor Leaders will be students during events who help coordinate overnight visits and help recruit their fellow floor mates to host.

John Huckins will speak in chapel today

He will speak on freedom and success and will explore what it might look like to embrace a sacred vocation that frees us to live interdependent lives with God and neighbor, while discovering our best success in joining God in the world he is making. Huckins is the co-founding director of The Global Immersion Project, a missional leadership coach with Thresholds, a family man, speaker, and author of Thin Places & Teaching Through the Art of Storytelling.

Craftspeople welcome to lunch gathering each Wednesday

‘Burn in the quad’ scheduled today

The Newberg Fire Department will create a structure burn in the quad at 11:45 a.m. today (Tuesday) as part of the university’s fire safety program. The event is organized by the student life office and is designed to educate people on how quickly fires can spread.

Jon Huckins will also share at Shalom on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 9 p.m. in the Cap & Gown Room. Huckins will talk about reconciliation as the mission of God and the vocation of God’s people. Chapel elective credit is available.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, evening chapel will be held in Bauman at 7 p.m. Jamie Johnson will continue our “Unfolding Life” series through the book of Matthew. He will preach on Matthew 6 and prayer. Chapel credit is available.

‘Islam and the West’ lecture series continues tonight

Christian Missionary Fellowship rep on campus today

Linda Brock, a recruiter/mobilizer for Christian Missionary Fellowship International on the West Coast, will be on campus today (Monday) from 5:45 to 7 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room to talk about the organization’s internship program.

For 65 years, CMF has taken Christ to the nations by recruiting, equipping and sending people committed to reaching the world with God’s love. Its internship program provides a unique option for students to experience missions in the real world.

REACH is an eight-week summer CMF internship for college freshmen and above considering missionary service. Teams of interns travel to countries where experienced CMF missionaries guide and involve them in missions on the field. The program puts interns right in the middle of what God is doing in a variety of CMF ministries around the world. Internship dates for summer 2015 are May 28 to Aug. 1.
