Theatre students perform ‘Mad/Art: A Theatrical Self-Portrait’ Saturday night

The theatre department invites you to join us Saturday, Sept. 27, for “Mad/Art: A Theatrical Self-Portrait,” a performance conceived, created and performed by students Olivia Anderson, Micah Bevis, Nicole Greene, Cambria Herrera, Madelyn Larson, Zach Maurer, Amberly Orr, Joia Otto, Alyssa Rands, Ian Rutledge and Cydney Thompson.

The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium, and admission is free.

Guest lecturer speaks on ‘Demystifying Islam’ Monday night

The campus community is invited to the next installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series this Monday, Sept. 29, in Hoover 105.

The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Harris Zafar, national spokesperson for the Ahmadiyyah Muslim Community. He will speak on “Demystifying Islam: Major Misconceptions,” in which he will address the question, “What are the major areas of angst and confusion about Islam in the minds of non-Muslims around the world?” Zafar will tackle such difficult topics as Jihad, Shariah Law and freedom of religion.

The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Student Surveys – Process for Distribution

Need to send out a student survey? The following guidelines have been established for the distribution of student surveys. Faculty members are encouraged to help facilitate this process.

Please follow these guidelines when submitting student surveys for mass distribution. Send your surveys to Jere Witherspoon in the student life office. Your approved survey request should include all of the following:

1. Your name and email address (may include the list of names from those in your group)
2. Course name and professor
3. Approval for distribution granted by: _______________________ (list department)
4. Short, catchy blurb about the survey no more than 35 words in length
5. A tested, workable link to the survey

An email with all submitted surveys will be sent to all students once a week (on Wednesdays). An identical Daily Bruin announcement will be submitted at the same time to the student Daily Bruin forum. The following disclaimer will be attached to the email and the Daily Bruin announcement:

Reminder: Women’s self-defense class is tomorrow

Tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. residence life and ASC are sponsoring a one-day women’s self-defense class. Recently we were able to arrange things so the class is free of charge for current students and $25 for staff and faculty. It will be held at a location to be determined.

Sign-ups are in the student life office. While it is on a first-come, first-served basis, there is also a waiting list. No specific athletic ability is required.

Interested in participating in a Senior Seminar project?

Are you interested in helping with an exercise science experiment? The experiment will test knee angles during landing with a hope of improving knee health in high-risk, active female populations.

The experiment will require a group of approximately 30 women. Participants must have at least three months experience exercising and experience no pain during jumping, running and squatting. Participants will be conducting two to three workouts per week over an eight-week period.

Reminder: C.S. Lewis expert speaks on campus Friday

Michael Ward, PhD, professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University and director of the C.S. Lewis Centre in Oxford, England, will visit the Newberg campus to present a lecture, “The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God: C.S. Lewis, Narnia and the Planets,” at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday), in Bauman Auditorium. There is no charge to attend.

Ward is a leading expert on the works of C.S. Lewis and the author of Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis. He is senior research fellow at Blackfriars Hall in the University of Oxford and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis. He presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code (2009). As an Anglican clergyman, he served as chaplain of St Peter’s College at the University of Oxford from 2009 to 2012 and as chaplain of Peterhouse at the University of Cambridge from 2004 to 2007.

The lecture is sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program. A reception immediately following the lecture will be held for those interested in learning more about the honors program.

Community garden party is tonight

The university’s Creation Care Committee invites you to join us for a community celebration of the autumn equinox today (Thursday). Work putting the garden to bed will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner will follow at 5:30 p.m. The garden is located on a plot of land behind Coffin Residence Hall.

Bring some work gloves, a dish to share with the group, and ideas you have for what you’d like to see from the Creation Care Committee this year!

Urban Outreach happening tonight; note time changes

Urban Outreach is happening tonight (Thursday)! We would love for you to join us at 5:30 p.m. in front of the ASC offices. We are going to Portland (back by 11 p.m.) and Salem (back by 8:30 p.m.). Salem is leaving at 5:30 p.m. instead of 5 p.m.! This is different than last week, so please plan to meet at 5:30 p.m. instead. Missionary organization rep visits campus this Monday

Linda Brock, a recruiter/mobilizer for Christian Missionary Fellowship International on the West Coast, will be on campus Monday, Sept. 29, from 5:45 to 7 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room to talk about the organization’s internship program.

For 65 years, CMF has taken Christ to the nations by recruiting, equipping and sending people committed to reaching the world with God’s love. Its internship program provides a unique option for students to experience missions in the real world.

REACH is an eight-week summer CMF internship for college freshmen and above considering missionary service. Teams of interns travel to countries where experienced CMF missionaries guide and involve them in missions on the field. The program puts interns right in the middle of what God is doing in a variety of CMF ministries around the world. Internship dates for summer 2015 are May 28 to Aug. 1.

Fox & Friends Speed Friending

The first Fox & Friends event of the year is Thursday, Sept. 25. We will meet in the Bruin Den at 6:10 p.m. and the event will last until 8 p.m. Fox & Friends consists of monthly parties at Friendsview Retirement Center. This month we are “speed-friending,” and the goal is to encourage friendships with the elderly community at Friendsview.

Come and enjoy a night of silly questions, Italian sodas, and free food, as well as the company of elders in our community!
