Christian C. Sahner, author of Among the Ruins: Syria Past and Present (Oxford University Press, 2014), will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Hoover 103. The campus community is invited to attend at no charge.
Sahner’s lecture will explore the roots of Christianity in Syria and seek to place the current predicament in historical perspective. The William Penn Honors Program is sponsoring this lecture, and a reception for students interested in the honors program will follow. A graduate of Princeton University and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, Sahner is currently completing his doctorate at Princeton, focusing on relations between Muslims and Christians in the formative period after the Arab conquests.
The Wineskin, the university’s student literary magazine, is still accepting submissions for publication. We are accepting poetry, fiction, non-fiction, art (painting, drawings, charcoal, photography, etc.) and artist/author interviews. The maximum word count for written pieces is 1,500 words.

Theme
In honor of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, occurring on Nov. 1 & 2, the theme for the spoken word event will be “Life and Death.” In Mexican communities, Day of the Dead is a day to celebrate the life that our loved ones lived.
What does the theme mean to you? Have you had to say goodbye to a loved one? If so, how did you cope? How does your culture teach or not teach you to cope? Has your culture shaped your view on death to be a positive one — believing a loved one is resting in a better place?
“Life and Death” are bold and heavy topics, and are accompanied by grief and struggle. What were some of the things you battled with at the time, and battle with now in regards to the topic? What stories does it trigger? Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and honest.

George Fox will be taking a group to Forward Edge International’s dinner banquet in Portland at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Red Lion Hotel. If you’re interested in learning more about what Forward Edge does around the world, come hear from guest speakers, particularly if you’re interested in traveling to Oklahoma this winter for Winter Serve or Haiti for Summer Serve. We send teams to these locations with Forward Edge, and you will be able to meet team leaders!

Valley Repertory Theatre, a local nonprofit theatre company, will kick off its fourth season of live theatre with the production The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez. The play opens Oct. 10, and all performances will be at the Newberg Masonic Lodge, 402 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg.
In recognition of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, Valley Rep is hosting a special lecture and performance on Friday, Oct. 17, when Kerry Irish, professor of American history at George Fox, will introduce the play with a special historical presentation at 7:30 p.m., with the performance immediately following. There is no additional charge for this pre-show event.
The show runs for three weekends. Evening (7:30 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. Matinee (2 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 12, 19 and 26. Doors open at 7:10 p.m. and 1:40 p.m., respectively.
The Sunday matinee performances on Oct. 12 and 19 are “Pay What You Will.†More information can be found at valleyrep.org.
