If you normally park in the Essential Services spaces by the southwest corner and south edge of the tennis courts, or the MLRC/bookstore reserved spots, they will be roped off those two days, as the large trucks need room to maneuver. Also, those who park on Sheridan Street will need to park in the Pennington or Stevens lots on those two days.

George Fox coaches John Bates and Ken Ingram are hosting a Gridiron Football Camp, and an NBC Basketball Camp is back on campus this week. NBC camps emphasize extensive skill development, intensity, enthusiasm, leadership and teamwork. Many athletes who have attended NBC camps go on to play at the college level and beyond.

Special Olympics of Oregon will be hosting its bocce tournament at the Austin Turf Field on July 11-12. And the third annual Mayor’s Bocce Ball Tournament kicks it off on Friday, July 10, starting at noon.

The Fitness Center will be closed July 3, 4 and 5, as campus is closed for the holiday.

We are grilling up hamburgers, garden burgers and chicken burgers today (Wednesday), and serving them with tossed green salad, summer stone fruit salad, chips, mini hand pies and a beverage for $6.75. Come on over to the quad for lunch! Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Bruin Den and Villa Café will be closed this Friday, July 3, in observance of the July 4 holiday. Have a safe, happy holiday, and we will see you on Monday when we resume our summer hours of operation (8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Bruin Den and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Villa Café).

All university offices will be closed this Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. The University Store will also be closed, as will libraries in Newberg and the Portland Center.

If your department doesn’t yet have somebody certified in basic First Aid/CPR/AED, please consider signing up for training on Tuesday, Aug. 4, and Wednesday, Aug. 5. Class is held in Hoover 203 from noon to 5 p.m. both days, with the First Aid portion being on one day and the CPR/AED portion on the other day.

Sign-ups and payment are online on the security services site, and classes are capped at eight students. If these dates don’t work, please contact Mark Stone at mstone@georgefox.edu to consider scheduling the class at another time that works better for your department.

Space also remains in the Friday, Aug. 21, Basic Life Support (BLS) classes for health care professionals, and it is required for all nursing, PT and PsyD students, so sign up soon to reserve one of the eight spots!

John Bates and Ken Ingram are hosting Gridiron Football Team Camp this week. About 170 high school students and coaches are here to experience coaching at the collegiate level and learn about George Fox.

NBC Basketball Camps are back for another fun-filled summer of sports camps. Camps run Sunday through Thursday, June 28 to July 2. Registrations are still being accepted for the camps starting on July 5 and July 12.

The Oregon Suzuki Institute begins this Saturday. The Oregon Suzuki Institute is a one-week summer institute for young musicians trained in the Suzuki method, a practice of music instruction developed more than 50 years ago by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki of Japan. The method is based on the concept that every child’s innate musical talent can be nurtured.

We are having some great lunch specials in the Bruin Den and Villa Café this week! Tuesday we are serving Mexican food out of the Groovy Bruin on the quad, Wednesday is our weekly barbecue outside the Bruin Den, and Thursday we are celebrating the roots of barbecue, Carolina style.

Plant Services will begin remodeling the women’s locker room next week, and they need anyone who has a locker in the general changing area to remove all items from their locker by tomorrow (Friday).

If personal items are not moved in time, we will have to cut off locks and store all items in plastic bags until claimed by owners.

Summer is a great time to do advance preparation for the upcoming academic year, and if you haven’t been trained in basic first aid, CPR or AED (automated external defibrillator), now is the time to sign up! Basic Life Support classes for health professionals are also scheduled during the summer months and are required for nursing, physical therapy and PsyD students. These are the already-scheduled classes that still have openings:

• First Aid/CPR/AED: July 15 and 16 (seven spots)
• BLS: Aug. 10 (three spots)

Learning these important skills can help you save a life! Just last weekend, citizens helped save two people from drowning in the Portland metro area using their CPR skills.

The Northwest Pacific Lace Society is holding its regional conference on campus this week. Established in 1971, the Portland Lace Society is a chartered member of the International Organization of Lace, Inc. and is dedicated to both the study and art of handmade lacemaking, including tatting, knitted lace, point lace and needle lace. Stop by the EHS Atrium Saturday, June 20, to see demonstrations and meet vendors.

The Friends Association of Higher Education Conference is here June 18-21. The theme this year is “Truth and Transformation.” The conference aims to deepen our practice and sharpen our skills as we seek to pursue, discern and honor the truth in our Quaker heritage.

A special feature this year is a one-act play, First Lady Lou, which features the historic contributions made by Lou Hoover before, during and after the presidency of her husband, Herbert Hoover, who attended Pacific Friends Academy (the forerunner of George Fox University). Tickets are $15 (general admission), $10 (seniors/George Fox community members) and $5 (students) and can be purchased at the door of Wood-Mar Auditorium on Friday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. (cash or check only). The show begins that night at 7:30 p.m.

George Fox’s own Gridiron Football Team Camp is here June 21-24. High school teams will be here to sharpen skills and experience college-level coaching. Camp format allows teams to practice together, scrimmage other teams, and compete in 7-on-7 and Pass pro/Pass rush (pro rush).

They are cleaning out the Foxhole, so Fellowship at Fox will be outside this Thursday, June 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the beautiful sun-soaked quad! We’ll have cookies and refreshments, games, and talk about what it looks like to live out our faith in college.

This is a new series we are starting, and we’re excited about it! It’s a great time to swing by and join us if you haven’t already. The mission of our small group is to bring people together on campus this summer, in a Christ-centered environment, where we can just be ourselves and have fun. The campus community is invited to a presentation of the play First Lady Lou, a one-woman dramatization of the life of Lou Hoover, wife of President Herbert Hoover, at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, June 19, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

The play features professional actress Jane Fellows in the title role. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and university employees, and $5 for students.

After the play, a “talk-back” session with Fellows and Leslie Hoover-Lauble, great-granddaughter of Herbert and Lou Hoover, will be moderated by the university’s archivist Rachel Thomas. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, attended the precursor to George Fox, Friends Pacific Academy, in the 1880s.

The presentation is among the events planned during the Friends Association for Higher Education Conference, scheduled on the George Fox campus Thursday through Sunday, June 18-21. The event will draw Friends educators from colleges, universities and study centers from around the world.

Interested in getting involved in a college group this summer? Matt Dyment, an area coordinator at George Fox, and his wife Carla are serving as youth pastors at Countryside Community Church in Sherwood, and they will be kicking off their weekly meetings this Wednesday, June 17, at 7 p.m.

During this first gathering, we will have a barbecue going with burgers and hot dogs. We will also hang out, meet new people and sing some worship songs together.
