Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions was selected to replace the current SunGard Bi-Tech software that had been scheduled discontinuance in 2010. This process progressed through extensive demos from four major vendors. In the end, it was apparent the decision came down to either SunGard’s Banner or PeopleSoft.

The new system will take a couple of years to deploy; however, early benefits are expected from the customizable web portal in the first year. The unanimous decision to go with PeopleSoft was influenced by opportunities for more web services and integrated online campus data management. Other Bi-Tech customers joining us in the selection of PeopleSoft include: Azusa Pacific, Anderson, Walla Walla, and Vanguard.

Our Administrative Integrated Software (AIS) committee deserves our gratitude for conducting this extensive selection process.

Selah, a one-day seminar for women featuring licensed professional counselor Pam Vredevelt, George Fox Campus Pastor Sarah Thomas Baldwin, and professor/pastor MaryKate Morse is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, in Bauman Auditorium.

The fourth annual event runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a book-sales session scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will address aspects of the event’s theme, “Uncovering Joy,” which emphasizes the fact women “are the beloved of Christ and can live in the freedom of hope regardless of circumstances that threaten to steal joy.”

Georgene Rice will return as emcee, and Bonnie Knopf will lead worship. Mark Demel, a Willow Creek artist, will present demonstrations.

George Fox will close for its ninth annual Serve Day on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Serve teams are going to more than 60 sites and also about 40 homes in the Newberg area. As a courtesy, the Serve Day committee suggests you create e-mail and voice mail messages to advise callers that offices are closed.

The committee also wishes to remind you that your presence is expected and needed on this day. You should have received information about where you are assigned to serve. If you have not, contact Kayin Griffith immediately so she can let you know where you will be needed. Also, if you have any available gloves, bring them to use on Serve Day.

The theme of this year’s event is “Imagine,” based on Ephesians 3:20: “God can do anything, you know- far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams!” (The Message)

Lindgren Gallery will host an exhibit by Azusa Pacific University graduate student Kathleen Yorba beginning Thursday, Sept. 6, and running through Monday, Oct. 8.

Next week, an exhibit featuring the prints of Yuji Hiratsuka and the sculptures of Kim Hoffman begins with an opening reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Minthorne Gallery. Hoffman is a professor at Western Oregon University and Hiratsuka teaches at Oregon State University. Their show runs through Oct. 11 in the Minthorne Gallery.

To a *missionary kid, the phrase “MK” suggests a sense of identity and belonging, making him a kindred spirit with other MKs, a context for mutual understanding and communication which she/he finds nowhere else (see Mu Kappa site).

A *third-culture kid is someone who has spend a part of his or her life in a culture other than their parent’s home culture. Their parents may have been employed by an international business. Even now, we have international students on campus who can be considered TCK’s.

Track resurfacing work begins on Wednesday, Sept. 5, and will continue until Friday, Sept. 21.  The track will reopen for use the afternoon of Sept. 21. 

The Academic Resource Center is hosting two workshops in the next two weeks. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, Sept. 3, 4, and 6, a time management workshop is scheduled. Next week, Sept. 10-13, the topic will be reading and notetaking strategies. 

Workshops take place in EHS 102 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. A sign-up sheet will be used to track attendance for those required to attend.

Later this fall, APA Style workshops will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 17, and Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

If you have not already done so, please complete, check, and sign your August time sheet (staff) or time-off report (administrators), and then send it on to your supervisor for signature. These forms can be found at: http://www.georgefox.edu/offices/hr/forms.html.

Please send it to Human Resources at Box 6108 this week. If your supervisor is not available to sign, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed.

Starting Tuesday September 4th tickets will be issued for all parking violations.

George Fox libraries now provide access to Classical Music Library, Smithsonian Global Sound, and African American Song.  These combine to offer tens of thousands of tracks of music as well as drama, poetry, and more.  To access, go to the library’s alphabetical list of databases at http://www.georgefox.edu/offices/murdock/alphabeticalindex.html and select the database of choice.   Listeners can create playlists of their favorite tracks.

Did you know we have a community garden at George Fox? Yes, and it’s been growing all summer. It’s located on campus directly north of the Villa Academic Complex, where the helipad used to be. Drop by and have some sugar snap peas, purple beans, or golden cherry tomatoes and check out the baby watermelons and ripening brandywine tomatoes.

A work party is scheduled for the garden from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. Come join in the work, or just come to check it out and find out how you can be involved (the univeristy will have a winter garden as well). Everyone is welcome.

Employees in Portland, Boise, Salem, and Redmond will get a day off on Monday, Sept. 3, in recognition of the Labor Day holiday. The Newberg campus will stay with its traditional schedule, remaining open on Labor Day and closing for a mid-semester holiday on Friday, Oct. 12. Portland, Boise, Salem, and Redmond will not take a mid-semester holiday.

The inaugural meeting of the Pacific Northwest section of the American Scientific Affiliation will take place in the Cap and Gown Room on the university’s Newberg campus from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15.  The session is entitled “Science and Religion at War?”

Randy Isaac, executive director of the American Scientific Affiliation, and Dave Willis, professor emeritus, Oregon State University, will be the featured speakers. A luncheon will follow.

The university’s alumni board is seeking nominees for the 2008 Outstanding Recent Alumnus/a award.  Nominees must be graduates of the traditional undergraduate program since 1998 to qualify.

The Center for Teaching and Learning will host a faculty teaching forum from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Executive Dining Room on the Newberg campus Thursday, Sept. 6. The forum is entitled “Putting Student Evaluations to Use” and will provide information about resources available to make practical sense of student evaluation numbers.

To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu) by noon on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Everyone is welcome to attend whether they bring a lunch or reserve one.

Custodial Services requests your patience in the coming weeks.  The department is down to 14 custodial supervisors who are trying to clean almost 800,000 square feet of building space per day while also trying to work in the training of new student employees.

So far, only 29 students are employed – far fewer than the usual 90 to 100 who end up working. If you have concerns over garbage not being removed or floors being unswept or vacuumed, don’t hesitate to e-mail the Plant Services office.  A work request will be created and Custodial Services will get to the request as quickly as possible.
