The university’s board of trustees will meet on the Newberg campus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20. Friday’s plenary session will be in the Cap and Gown Room in Heacock Commons. Saturday’s plenary session is scheduled in the Villa Academic Complex’s Room 117.
The focus of the sessions will be strategic planning, as led by Ian Symmonds of Ian Symmonds and Associates Inc.

The Academic Resource Center will host an American Psychological Association workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in EHS 102. The session will cover APA formatting for citations and references. Stephanie Meagher, a master’s student in the university’s counseling program, will be the presenter.

Support staff will spend Wednesday, Oct. 24, at an all-day conference at Tigard Community Friends Church. We will miss their contributions that day, but this annual event is endorsed by the President’s Executive Team with the expectation that all support staff attend. Your full support is needed as well. Some services may be reduced or not provided on that day, but operations should be back to normal on Oct. 25.
Requests to be excused from the conference should only be made due to extenuating circumstances and must be approved by the support staff member’s supervisor(s) and vice president or provost. These requests should not be directed to HR.

Lutheran Volunteer Corps representative Kristin Nordmark will be in the Student Union Building (SUB) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, to provide information about the organization.
A community of faith, LVC is a national volunteer service organization that unites people to work for peace and justice. For one year, volunteers live together in intentional community, practice simple and sustainable living, and work in stipended, full-time positions at social justice organizations.
The lost and found tables are coming. If you have lost an item since the beginning of school, come to the Bruin Den between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. next Monday or Tuesday, Oct. 22-23, to check the tables for your lost item(s). All items not claimed by their owners will be donated to charity on Tuesday after 2 p.m.
The Office of Multicultural Services and the Center for Teaching and Learning are hosting a brown-bag lunch discussion on diversity in the classroom from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Bruin Den Annex. The sessions will continue to meet every other week.
Multicultural Services staff will be available to answer questions relative to diversity in and out of the classroom. There is not a set agenda, but a relaxed atmosphere of discussion. Resources will be provided.
Vickie Kilber, mother of Patrick Kibler, a student killed by a drunk driver in 2004, will visit campus for the Student Life-sponsored “Your Dash – What Are You Doing With It?” alcohol-awareness week event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Hoover 105.
Those in attendance will receive gift certificates for a free meal at Wendy’s.
All students, faculty and staff interested in getting a flu shot are welcome to schedule one through the university’s Health and Counseling Center. The center’s flu clinic will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Ian Symmonds of Ian Symmonds and Associates, Inc. will visit the Newberg campus on Monday, Oct. 15, to conduct open sessions with all staff and administrators and host small, informal focus groups with faculty and students.
Ian Symmonds and Associates is a consulting firm that specializes in analysis-based strategic marketing and planning for a nationwide client base of independent schools, colleges, universities, and nonprofits. President Robin Baker and the board of trustees selected the firm to guide the university through a strategic planning process to prepare the university for the future.
For your convenience, two sessions will be held for all staff and administrators. These 45-minute sessions will address strategic issues facing the university, hopeful outcomes of the planning process, and key distinctive elements of the institution. These open sessions are designed to give everyone a voice and opportunity to contribute to the planning process. Open sessions for all staff and administrators are scheduled for the following times in Wood-Mar Auditorium:
8:30 – 9:15 a.m.
9:15 – 10 a.m.
All staff and administrators are encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
Faculty and student sessions:
Small focus groups have also been scheduled for both faculty and students on Monday; those participants have received a schedule for times and locations. An open session for all faculty and future focus groups will be scheduled at a later date by Symmonds and Associates.
Faculty, staff, and students are all represented on the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, and the whole of the university will be more engaged with planning during the winter and spring.

The Newberg campus will take its mid-semester holiday on Friday, Oct. 12. No classes will be held, and the university’s offices, bookstore, switchboard, and library will be closed. The Portland and Boise sites will remain open.
