Plant Services will be installing new light poles in the Villa Academic Complex South lot Friday. All vehicles must be moved out of the South VAC lot before Friday morning. Owners who cannot be found will have their vehicles towed at their expense. The South lot will be closed all day.

A faculty teaching forum, “The First Day of Class: Beginning with the End in Mind,” is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Executive Dining Room on the Newberg campus.
The first day of class is vital for setting expectations that will impact the remainder of the semester. In this session, Dwight Kimberly (Biology) will share some of his philosophy and strategies for getting his classes off to a strong start and carrying through to the end of the semester.

You are invited to join the engineering department for its annual “Pumpkin Chunkin'” event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Farmer Brown’s Pumpkin Farm. The event demonstrates student-designed catapults that fling pumpkins.

The Portland Youth Philharmonic will perform two concerts in Bauman Auditorium Sunday and Monday, Nov. 4-5.
Sunday’s concert begins at 4 p.m. and features the PYP’s wind ensemble. Tickets cost $10 for seniors/students and $12 for adults and will be available at the door a half hour before the concert.
On Monday, the PYP’s youth orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge for that performance.
Students in modern British literature and French classes, with technical help from theatre students, are combining to stage a one-time theatrical performance of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. The presentation will be in both French and English (subtitles will be provided). Admission is free, and a brief talk-back session will follow the show.

The George Fox Auxiliary is again hosting a holiday bazaar and silent auction this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, in the Ron Gregory and Hoover atriums on the Newberg campus.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission charge, and all proceeds go toward the university’s auxiliary scholarship fund.
Vendors will be selling various crafts, linens, jewelry, candles, handmade gifts, plants, holiday breads and candies, acrylic paintings, gift boxes, and many silent auction pieces. The silent auction closes at 2 p.m. Saturday. Bidders must be present to receive the bid.

More than 800 family members are expected to visit for the university’s 27th annual Family Weekend Nov. 2-4. Events include a dinner and jazz concert on Friday night; faculty lectures and workshops Saturday morning; a luncheon, meet-the-president reception and music department concert Saturday afternoon; and a closing chapel service on Sunday. Guests also will be treated to theatre performances of Whatever Kindles (Nov. 1-4) and an improv comedy presentation Saturday.

As part of Cultural Celebration Week, a collection of essays written by international students is available to employees at the cultural fair scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the EHS Atrium.
