Rob Westervelt speaks on branding at event tomorrow

Sunday, June 21st, 2015

What are the secrets to unlocking a powerful brand in the marketplace? Rob Westervelt, executive vice president of enrollment and marketing at George Fox, will speak on the subject of branding at the Tuesday, June 23, Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest. The meeting runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Windrose Conference Center, 809 W. First St. The cost is a suggested $5 donation.

Four years ago, Westervelt helped the school build a brand that has seen its net revenues grow 21 percent during a time when most universities in George Fox’s category were experiencing significant declines. As part of the presentation, Westervelt will share insights into understanding how brands are developed and destroyed. His presentation aims to help those attending improve their company’s bottom line.

Westervelt’s expertise in brand development can be seen throughout Oregon through George Fox’s “Be Known” campaign and the development of the university’s football brand. He has a passion for working with business leaders to help them understand the powerful connections between business analytics, marketing and branding.

For more information, go to the Chamber’s website, cccnw.net, or call 503-928-8354.

Employees prohibited from contributing to athlete’s GoFundMe account

Thursday, June 18th, 2015

George Fox University is excited to welcome a freshman football player with an inspirational story. As many of you may have read in this Oregonian story by John Canzano, Rudy Hughes plans to join our campus community after serving as a major supporter of his mother as she battled cancer during his high school years in West Linn. In part because of the financial hardships incurred with her treatment, the family is seeking loans and has started a GoFundMe account to help cover the cost of college.

Unfortunately, the NCAA has strict guidelines for student-athletes that prohibit university employees from funding their education. In short, if you are an employee of George Fox, it is a violation of NCAA rules to donate to Rudy’s account, and doing so jeopardizes his eligibility to play football.

We are obviously excited Rudy will be joining us, as he has exhibited tremendous character in trying circumstances, but we also do not wish to hurt his chances of suiting up for the Bruins this fall. Please refrain from donating to the GoFundMe account if you are a George Fox employee.

If you’re interested in joining the Bruin Brigade as a ticket seller or at the information table, send an email to Sarah Reid (sreid@georgefox.edu) and she’ll get you connected.

Host family needed for visiting Chinese teacher

Wednesday, June 17th, 2015

The Newberg School District is looking for a host family to share the experience of American culture with the exchange teacher participating in the Teachers of Critical Languages Program this coming school year.

In addition to understanding American culture, the teacher coming to teach Mandarin to Newberg middle and high school students wants to share her Chinese culture with Americans and improve relationships between our two countries. The host family, or families hosting for a partial year, would be responsible for renting a room in their home, including her in day-to-day family life and assisting with transportation to and from the high school (she will have a bicycle).

The exchange teacher will participate in an American “boot camp,” a welcome program and local cultural introduction, plus ongoing Chinese cultural exchange activities at George Fox. A host (or hosts) is needed between Aug. 20, 2015, through June 2016. A stipend is included. Please contact Stafford Boyd at 503-554-5015 or boyds@newberg.k12.or.us for further information.

Who’s on campus this week …

Wednesday, June 17th, 2015

The Northwest Pacific Lace Society is holding its regional conference on campus this week. Established in 1971, the Portland Lace Society is a chartered member of the International Organization of Lace, Inc. and is dedicated to both the study and art of handmade lacemaking, including tatting, knitted lace, point lace and needle lace. Stop by the EHS Atrium Saturday, June 20, to see demonstrations and meet vendors.

The Friends Association of Higher Education Conference is here June 18-21. The theme this year is “Truth and Transformation.” The conference aims to deepen our practice and sharpen our skills as we seek to pursue, discern and honor the truth in our Quaker heritage.

A special feature this year is a one-act play, First Lady Lou, which features the historic contributions made by Lou Hoover before, during and after the presidency of her husband, Herbert Hoover, who attended Pacific Friends Academy (the forerunner of George Fox University). Tickets are $15 (general admission), $10 (seniors/George Fox community members) and $5 (students) and can be purchased at the door of Wood-Mar Auditorium on Friday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. (cash or check only). The show begins that night at 7:30 p.m.

George Fox’s own Gridiron Football Team Camp is here June 21-24. High school teams will be here to sharpen skills and experience college-level coaching. Camp format allows teams to practice together, scrimmage other teams, and compete in 7-on-7 and Pass pro/Pass rush (pro rush).

New parking hang tags are coming soon

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015

Staff, administrators, faculty members and adjuncts: Is your hang tag permit in tatters, or even worse, is it missing? Is your adjunct permit from 2012? Never fear because new, more durable staff and faculty hang tags are coming this summer!

The last details are being finalized on a new vehicle registration database that you will access via MyGFU. All employee and adjunct hang tags will become invalid once the new system is in place, so please watch The Daily Bruin announcements for how this new database will be unrolling within a few weeks.

A bit more information will be needed when you register, so once the system is live, please note the information that is being requested and have it all on hand when you access the database to register. If you have put in a request for a staff or adjunct permit within the past month or so, it won’t be fulfilled at this point due to the database switchover. We will be sending out directions once the system is live, so keep watching here for all of the information!

Portland employees: If you regularly come to the Newberg campus, we would like you to register as well. If you only work at the Portland Center, then there is no need to register.

Questions? Contact Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.

Play ‘First Lady Lou’ presented in Wood-Mar this Friday

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015

The campus community is invited to a presentation of the play First Lady Lou, a one-woman dramatization of the life of Lou Hoover, wife of President Herbert Hoover, at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, June 19, in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

The play features professional actress Jane Fellows in the title role. Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and university employees, and $5 for students.

After the play, a “talk-back” session with Fellows and Leslie Hoover-Lauble, great-granddaughter of Herbert and Lou Hoover, will be moderated by the university’s archivist Rachel Thomas. Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, attended the precursor to George Fox, Friends Pacific Academy, in the 1880s.

The presentation is among the events planned during the Friends Association for Higher Education Conference, scheduled on the George Fox campus Thursday through Sunday, June 18-21. The event will draw Friends educators from colleges, universities and study centers from around the world.

More information on the conference and/or play is available by visiting quakerfahe.com or writing Paul Anderson at panderso@georgefox.edu.
