Employees prohibited from contributing to athlete’s GoFundMe account

George Fox University is excited to welcome a freshman football player with an inspirational story. As many of you may have read in this Oregonian story by John Canzano, Rudy Hughes plans to join our campus community after serving as a major supporter of his mother as she battled cancer during his high school years in West Linn. In part because of the financial hardships incurred with her treatment, the family is seeking loans and has started a GoFundMe account to help cover the cost of college.

Unfortunately, the NCAA has strict guidelines for student-athletes that prohibit university employees from funding their education. In short, if you are an employee of George Fox, it is a violation of NCAA rules to donate to Rudy’s account, and doing so jeopardizes his eligibility to play football.

We are obviously excited Rudy will be joining us, as he has exhibited tremendous character in trying circumstances, but we also do not wish to hurt his chances of suiting up for the Bruins this fall. Please refrain from donating to the GoFundMe account if you are a George Fox employee.
