About Our People

February 12th, 2018

Cherice Bock (Seminary) published a study, “Watershed Discipleship: communicating climate change within a Christian framework, a case study analysis,” in the book Handbook of Climate Change Communication, Vol. 3: Case Studies in Climate Change Communication (Springer, 2018). On March 10, 2018, she will be the speaker for Quaker Heritage Day at Berkeley Friends Church in Berkeley, California, where she will speak on the topic “Quakers & the EcoReformation.”

Doug Campbell (Professor Emeritus, Art) published his book Tree Story and Other Poems in mid-January through Oblique Voices Press. Tree Story is the second book of poetry released by the author following his stroke in 2012, which subsequently left him with a language disorder called aphasia. According to the publisher, the book “challenges us to see through a different lens, one that clarifies and sharpens the natural world, and that places humans as supporting actors in the grand drama nature gives us.”

After several years of research and conducting thousands of interviews with leaders – including industry executives, coaches, government administrators and world-renowned academics – Tim Rahschulte and Ryan Halley (College of Business) captured leadership advice, lessons learned, and rules to follow that enable individual, team and organizational success in their latest book, My Best Advice: Proven Rules For Effective Leadership (IntelliPress Media). Also contributing to the book was Russ Martinelli, founder and president of Innovation InSites and a senior program manager at Intel.

Jennie Harrop (Department of Professional Studies/Adult Degree Program) published the university’s first open textbook last month. The Simple Math of Writing Well: Writing for the 21st Century is available as a free download in the Open Textbook Library, a peer-reviewed collection of textbooks used by hundreds of universities. As 21st-century writers are asked to embrace a variety of mediums in an internet-connected world, basic writing skills are increasingly more critical for effective, efficient communication. With section titles such as “The Sentence Equation” and “The Paragraph Equation,” the book outlines the basics of linguistic structure and mechanics in clear, simple terms. Other sections emphasize the importance of purpose, audience, and intentionality, and a subsection titled “12 Rules to Forget” names basic grammar rules that have changed over the years. The book is free, easy to access, and applicable as a primary or secondary resource for students from high school through doctoral level.

Ed Higgins (Emeritus, English Department) has published a number of poems of late. His “What I Learned About Death While Eating Dark Chocolate” appeared in the literary journal Cacti Fur on Jan. 1, and his piece “Backyard” appeared in riverbabble 32 on Feb. 4. In addition, his poem “the rutting quop” was published in Scifaikuest (online version) in February, and his flash fiction piece “Odysseus Remembered” recently ran in the online journal Cafe Aphra.

Be aware of work being done on Fulton Street tomorrow

February 11th, 2018

The city of Newberg will limit Fulton Street to one lane tomorrow (Tuesday). Flaggers will be on hand to direct traffic, so expect major delays. Drivers are encouraged to use a different route, as the street will be one lane all day, starting at 7 a.m.

The closure will occur east of the Bauman parking lot entrance at the top of the hill, past Thomas Lane and the West Wheeler/Le Shana parking lot entrance. Cars will be able to enter the Le Shana lot from the east entrance off Fulton Street. It is unclear if there will be access to the Wheeler circle lot. Entrance to the Bauman parking lot will be unaffected.

Thank you for your patience as the city corrects an issue with a sewer line traveling across Fulton Street.

Gentrification discussed at Matheteis on Feb. 20

February 11th, 2018

Intercultural Life is partnering with the Black Student Union for Black History Month to put together next week’s Matheteis! Join us at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Canyon Commons 103.

Matheteis is a discussion forum that comes from the Greek word for disciple. Our goal is to provide space for faculty, staff/administrators and students to discuss difficult topics in a cross-disciplinary approach that leads to learning and understanding.

We invite four panelists who are given two to three prompt questions ahead of time. After panelists have an opportunity to discuss the prompt questions, audience participants can also ask questions and join the discussion.

The topic will be the issue of gentrification. We want to engage in dialogue about the effects that less affluent communities experience in the process of renovating urban areas. Come join us for good conversation, snacks, and chapel credit!

Contact Brianna Martin-Ortega (bmartinortega16@georgefox.edu) for more information.

Newberg FISH available as resource for students

February 11th, 2018

Do you know a student who may benefit – or have family members that may benefit – from access to fresh produce as well as staple foods (rice, pasta, tortillas, canned vegetables, etc.)?

If so, keep Newberg FISH in mind as a resource. FISH provides food assistance in a respectful way to all those who come in and voice a need. They have a rule that they never turn anyone away.

To be eligible for a full food basket (with USDA food) there are some basic income restrictions, and a student must live in Newberg or Dundee. However, even students who do not meet these standards are eligible to receive the non-USDA food selection available at FISH.

A student simply needs to take a piece of his or her mail to the office. No Social Security numbers or intrusive personal details are collected. All FISH materials are available in English and Spanish.

To learn more about FISH, visit their website at newbergfish.org or write info@newbergfish.org. The office is located at 125-A S. Elliott Road in Newberg.

‘Be Heard’ on the 2018 student mixtape

February 9th, 2018

Calling all singers, bands, spoken word artists, and podcasters: The Student Mixtape Project is back, and we are passionate about giving George Fox students a chance to “Be Heard.”

Being a part of the mixtape only takes two simple steps:

  1. Fill out this survey so we can learn about who you are.
  2. If you would like a free hour of studio recording time, after the survey, we will send you an Excel sheet to sign up for your session. If your audio track is already mixed, please send it directly to Paige Patterson at ppatteson13@georgefox.edu.

Who are we?
The George Fox Student Mixtape Project is a collaborative student project that started back in the early 2000s. It was revamped last year through KFOX Radio to produce 400 student mixtapes that were given away on Dead Day. With the help of ASC, we plan to produce 800 free mixtapes for the student body featuring selected works and release the entirety of all submissions online.

Be a part of George Fox history, and “Be Heard.”
