There is still time to put together an intramural volleyball team. Sign-ups are on IM Leagues, and they close this Monday, Jan. 21, at midnight. Games begin on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Hadlock Student Center.

On the Newberg campus, the Hadlock Student Center will be open from noon to 11 p.m. that day, and the Bruin Store will be open from noon to 2 p.m. In-store pick-up orders can be retrieved during those hours in the store (no longer in the FoxHole).

The Office of Commuter Life is hosting a Relationship Retreat Feb. 8-10 on the Oregon Coast. It is open to undergraduate married, engaged or seriously dating couples (one person per couple must be an undergraduate George Fox student). There are still spots available, so sign up today!

The cost for those who register between now and Friday, Jan. 25, is $65 per couple, which covers meals and an amazing speaker. Spots are limited to 15 couples, so please fill out this form to sign up. Only one person from the couple needs to complete the form.

The politics department invites the university community to a special guest lecture, “Will America Ban Hate Speech?,” at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Hoover 105.

Presenting will be Arthur Milikh, associate director and research fellow at the Heritage Foundation’s B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics. Milikh conducts research on America’s founding principles, oversees the center’s research portfolio, and gives talks on the tenets of the American political tradition to policymakers, political leaders and the public.

You will be hearing from students and faculty about their experiences of either having been or being an ally. The goal is to better educate our campus on the importance of being an ally to better support our students of color. Everyone is welcome!

Writing is one of the highest-impact learning practices, regardless of discipline. And writing skills make your students more employable. But the key is for them to practice writing as often as possible over the entirety of their college education. You don’t need to be an expert in writing to assign writing in your course and help students.

Sponsored by the Academic Resource Center and the Department of English, a faculty development series, “Integrating Writing in the Classroom,” offers workshops for creating effective writing assignments in any course and training in best practices for responding and grading students’ writing. The series is appropriate both for faculty who want to know basic foundational concepts or are a seasoned teacher looking for new ideas.

Sessions are scheduled on three successive Tuesdays, on Jan. 22, Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, between 10:50 and 11:50 a.m. in EHS 325.

• Session 1: Designing Writing Assignments that Engage Students as Learners, Thinkers, and Writers
• Session 2: Reading, Commenting On, and Grading Student Writing
• Session 3: Workshop a Writing Assignment for Your Class

STRONG, a group created to provide support to students dealing with chronic illness or pain that affects daily life (fibromyalgia, PTSD, ME/CFS, etc.), is getting started on campus.

These things are often invisible to the healthy population and can be isolating, especially as a college student. We want you to feel supported and heard in your community!
