‘Micro-Sustainability Monday’: Power use

February 5th, 2023

Did you know the typical Oregon household uses 922 kWh per month? That equates to around $125 per month!

A single LED light bulb consumes 12.2 kWh a month ($1.71 per bulb). How many lightbulbs do you have in your home? Electricity costs more than you realize; save big by turning off unused lights!

Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Powermatic Jointer

February 2nd, 2023

It’s hard to guarantee that the piece of wood you want to work with is flat. The Maker Hub’s Powermatic Jointer helps carve wood down to produce a flat surface along a board’s length. This helps when gluing board edges together so they can be flat and fit together without gaps.

A jointer cuts with a helical cutter-head made up of many tiny carbide cutters wrapped around a rotating drum. Check out this video to see how it works! For more information, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki Page.

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

Interested in a club for theology? Come to our interest meeting on Feb. 8

February 2nd, 2023

We have an exciting opportunity coming up! We have heard from many students that they would love opportunities to be able to get to know fellow theology students in an informal environment, outside of the classroom.

What if there were a student club on campus for theology students? To be clear, this would be students interested in theology, including but not limited to the theology majors and minors.

Would you like to be part of such a club? Would you perhaps even like to be a leader of such a club?

Please come to our pre-founding interest meeting, which will be a luncheon with free food, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Hoover 104. We will even be cutting an Old Testament-style “covenant cake” to mark the importance of this day!

Check out our flyer here.

If you have any questions, reach out to Sunggu Yang at syang@georgefox.edu.

Reminders for National Cancer Prevention Month

February 1st, 2023

Getting tested regularly can find breast, cervical, and colon cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best. Screenings can help prevent cancer.

It’s important to consider your health throughout the year and be as proactive as possible before more serious issues arise. National Cancer Prevention Month is a great time to pause and consider what screenings you may be due for.

Some of the most common types of cancer screenings (and recommended ages) include:

  • Skin (starting in your 20s or 30s, especially when at increased risk)
  • Cervical (women aged 21 to 29 years screen for cervical cancer every three years with cytology alone. Women aged 30 to 65 years screen for cervical cancer every three years with cytology alone, every five years with hrHPV testing alone, or every five years with co-testing).
  • Prostate (men in their 40s)
  • Colorectal (starting at age 45 and continuing until age 75)
  • Lung (annually in adults aged 50 to 80 who have a 20-pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years)
  • Breast (every two years for women at average risk and aged 50 to 74)
