George Fox will celebrate the diversity of cultures during Cultural Celebration Week Oct. 29–Nov. 2. Everyone is invited to participate in the scheduled events. The details:

Monday, Oct. 29
10:40 a.m. – Chapel: “Commoners & Kings,” spoken-word artists from Los Angeles
Noon–1 p.m. – Talk-back lunch with “Commoners and Kings” members, Cap and Gown A

Tuesday, Oct. 30
3-5 p.m. – Cultural Fair (Ron Gregory Atrium, EHS). Everyone is invited to visit booths representing various cultures.

Wednesday, Oct 31
10:40 a.m. – Chapel: Student stories about cultural experiences
Noon–1 p.m. – Talk-back lunch with students, Cap & Gown A

Friday, Nov. 2
8–10 p.m. – Latin dance, Foxhole in the Student Union Building (sponsored by the International Club)

Mary Helen Curruth, a child survival specialist, and Kecia Bertermann, a technical services specialist, will discuss their work with Medical Teams International in Liberia and Indonesia on Monday, Oct. 29, in Lemmons 8 on the Newberg campus. They will speak from 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 7:50 p.m. The event is sponsored by the university’s Liberal Arts Critical Issues Program.

Design a t-shirt for every student to wear to the Homecoming Game. Rules and submission forms are in the SUB. Designs due November 2.

Our bookstore will be closed all day on Friday, Oct. 26, while our staff attends training.

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, the Portland Center’s front office will be closed in the morning due to a staff event.
We will open at 2 p.m. and be open until 6 p.m. to serve students.

Employees are encouraged to attend an all-campus meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in Bauman Auditorium. The meeting will provide employees an opportunity to receive campus updates, be involved in planning processes, and dialogue with President Robin Baker.

Join us this Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. for Bon Appetit’s annual Oktoberfest buffet in the Klages Dining Room. Feast on chicken jagerschnitzel, grilled brats, stuffed cabbage rolls, and root beer floats. Learn the “Chicken Dance” or just listen to the music of a live oom-pah band. Free for students on meal plan; $10 for staff, faculty, and guests.

Last call for sharing your culture by having a “booth” at the Cultural Fair.  The Fair is Tuesday, October 30, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., in the Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS.

Ways to share your culture might include music, dance, videos, pictures, crafts, games, and, of course, the all-time favorite, FOOD.  So come join the fun!  (We can reimburse you up to $30 for expenses if you give us your receipts.)

A flu clinic will be hosted at the Portland Center by the Health and Counseling Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29. Please make an appointment by calling ext. 2340.Walk-ins are also welcome and will be worked into the schedule. Employees may bring in their children, who must be grade-school age or older. The shots are free for employees with Pioneer Insurance, $1.50 for students with the student insurance plan, and $15 for those with Kaiser or other insurances. Cash and checks will be accepted.

A George Fox Auxiliary luncheon is scheduled for noon Friday, Oct. 26, in the Cap and Gown Room. Thomas Peng (China and East Asia Programs/Intercultural Studies) will speak, and several new Chinese students will be in attendance.

The cost is $7 per person. Reservations are required and may be made by calling Louise Clarkson at 503-538-2850 or Nancy Lamm at 503-538-2321 in advance.

All employees are invited to a Wellness Challenge brown-bag lunch at noon Thursday, Oct. 25, in Stevens 101. Josh Priester, an assistant track coach at the university, will give tips for short at-home workouts. There is no need to R.S.V.P.

Does race, class, and gender matter to God? This question will be discussed during a “Faith and Film” session scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Hoover 105. The Academy Award-winning film Crash will be shown, and Melanie Hulbert (Sociology) will speak.
