FoxTALE will be upgraded from Moodle version 2.2 to version 2.4 on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., to stay in alignment with updates at moodle.org. FoxTALE will not be available during this time. No preparation is required by faculty.

Here are some of the highlights of the new version:

• All icons will change. See the mapping from old to new icons.
• Assignments will be enhanced and have a new look and feel. There is only one type of assignment with many customizable features.
  • Existing assignments will be automatically converted to the new format. No action is required.
• Drag and drop files from your computer onto your course home page. The files will be added as resources.

All ages and experiences are welcome to attend a hip-hop dance class this Saturday, April 13, taught by George Fox senior Casey Bowman. There will be two class sessions:

• 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., for beginning – intermediate levels
• 1-2:30 p.m., for intermediate – advanced levels

The classes will be held at Chehalem Valley Dance Academy (311 E. 1st St.), and only cost $5 OR five cans of food! (Food will be donated to Newberg F.I.S.H.)

You can pick up and drop off the registration form in the business office in Hoover (first floor). Registration forms and payment are due by 3 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

After 35 years of service to George Fox, Hank Helsabeck is retiring this spring. The provost is hosting a retirement celebration for him from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 29, in the Klages Dining Room.

Come join us as we celebrate Hank and his contributions to the university. Prior to his current role as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, he was a math professor and department chair. He also started the computer science program – and taught himself everything there is to know about the degree in order to teach it. He was also a regular participant on the “GFU Ruins” Hood-to-Coast team for many years.

Sue began her service to the university in 1998 as an adjunct and later became the full-time director of field education for social work.

The university community is invited to two free concerts in Bauman Auditorium this week. On Friday, April 12, a Spring Jazz Concert, featuring the school’s Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble, is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.

Selections by the Jazz Combo will include “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Someday My Prince Will Come.” The Jazz Ensemble is set to play “Sugar,” “All the Things You Are,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “I Love You,” “And That’s That,”, “Shiny Stockings” and “Tickletoe.” Both groups are directed by Nathanael Ankeny.

On Sunday, April 14, the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. The orchestra, directed by Travis Hatton, will perform Jean Sibelius’ “Spring Song, op. 16,” Leo Delibes’ “Duet – Sous le dome epais from Lakme,” Albert Franz Doppler’s “Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise,” Edward Lalo’s “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, D minor” and Robert Schumann’s “Symphony #4, D minor, op. 120.”

Featured performers Sunday include Diana Koba (soprano), Suvi Mirka (mezzo soprano), Jessica Sokoloff (flute) and Rebecca Schroeder (cello).

Employees and students have the opportunity to nominate a deserving senior (graduating in May 2013) for one of four $1,000 CW Perry Servant Leadership Awards. Each award recipient will be required to set aside $250 of this gift to the charitable organization of his or her choice. The remaining $750 will be distributed to the award recipient in the form of a cash award.

“Being Christian in Today’s Middle East” is the topic for our next “Intellectual Feast” this afternoon (Tuesday).

What is life like for Christians in the modern Middle East? Is being a Christian in Palestine, Syria, Egypt, or Iraq more of an ethnic/racial distinction or a term to describe a “committed follower of Jesus”? What can we in the United States learn from our Christian brothers and sisters in the geographic location where our faith began?

George Fox student Moses Nijmeh (from Bethlehem) will be joined by friends from the Middle East to address these questions and more at our next feast, scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Hoover second-floor lounge.

This Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m., the George Fox community is welcome to a special advance screening of a controversial new film documentary that looks at the influence of American evangelicals on the society and politics of Uganda, one of Africa’s poorest nations.

God Loves Uganda premiered two months ago at the prestigious Sundance Festival and is currently being shown at different film festivals across the country. It won’t be shown in the general public for several months, but it has been seen at Biola University and Fuller Seminary. Our campus showing will be in Hoover 105.

The movie is free – as are the locally made delicious cupcakes and refreshments – and is relatively short (83 minutes long). Afterwards, there will be a talk-back session featuring Steve Sherwood, Abigail Rine and Michael MacLeod.

Important
This film addresses controversial topics regarding the interplay of Christian evangelism, questions of sexual morality (particularly homosexuality), colonialism and politics. It presents its case strongly and, in some cases, includes intense language and graphic imagery. The sponsors of the film recognize some of this may be unsettling to watch, but believe the film raises important issues for a Christian community like George Fox to consider and discuss.

The final faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the spring is titled “Shifting to Online Teaching: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” and will be held today (Monday) from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in Hoover 104.

Online teaching is an increasingly common format, but few professors feel fully at home in this environment. What are the opportunities and challenges? This “Coffee & Conversation” will feature the experiences of Melanie Hulbert, Brent Weaver, John Knox, Debora Herb-Sepich and Colleen Huffman. All of them are teaching summer online courses.

• Come if you want to get a better understanding of online teaching.
• Come if you are interested in what’s involved in shifting to online teaching.
• Come if you have your own experiences with online teaching to share.
