Host families needed during International Student Orientation

July 27th, 2016

This Fall, George Fox will welcome approximately 40 newly arrived international students, over half of whom are graduate students. Would you consider hosting a student or two during our International Student Orientation?

The orientation will begin Friday, Aug. 19, and end the morning of Aug. 25. The students will be in orientation during the days but need housing and a meal for the evenings and one weekend. Rather than put the undergraduate students in empty dorm rooms, we would like to place them with local Christian families.

Also, graduate students will not be able to live on campus, so they would need to stay with host families during the week of orientation.  Our office will help them secure permanent housing during that week.

This is a great opportunity for international students to be in the home of an American family and to see the reality of Christ in us.

A small stipend is offered to offset your expenses in hosting the students. If you are willing to serve as a host family, or would like more information, please contact Alex Pia at apia@georgefox.edu.

July 31 is last day to request off-campus housing

July 27th, 2016

July 31 is the last day eligible students can opt to live off campus. Opting to live off campus after this point will result in a $75 housing change late fee. Students who chose to move off campus (commute from home or otherwise) after the third week of the semester will not be eligible for a refund of housing charges and will be responsible for the full cost of the semester housing fees.

If you are planning to opt to live off campus, please pay attention to these deadlines and avoid any unnecessary charges!

For more information, please email housing@georgefox.edu.

Bruin Careers is soon being replaced with Handshake

July 27th, 2016

The IDEA Center is introducing a great new tool that will help make your student worker recruiting efforts easier, faster and more effective. Handshake is replacing Bruin Careers, offering a high-tech/high-touch tool for students seeking jobs and internships.

Create your profile now to put your on-campus job opportunities front and center. Check out the Handshake Help Center to learn how to post a job and reach out to students directly. All students will be re-routed to the new system starting on Aug. 8.

New features that were not available in Bruin Careers:

  • Mobile app for students and employers (find on App Store under “Handshake Mobile”)
  • Increased student personalization and engagement (think of a personalized Pinterest board where opportunities shown match a student’s major, skills and interests)
  • Easy identification of well-qualified students for your hiring needs

Kaitlyn Ragan will deliver a training at the on-campus supervisor meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 9 a.m. in Lemmons 8. This will be a great time to learn how to use and maximize this tool in your department.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to rework your current job descriptions, keeping in mind to be creative and “sell” your position in order to catch the attention of our George Fox millennials. The IDEA Center can provide a copy of your previous Bruin Career postings if you don’t have them on file, as well as answer any questions about this transition.

Insurance Waiver Reminder!

July 26th, 2016

If you have been charged for health insurance and already have coverage, please go to university forms in MyGFU to complete your insurance waiver. Once finished, your charges will generally be updated within 24 hours.

If 24 hours has passed and you are still being charged, it is possible you did not complete the form fully. If you left any of the fields blank, your form will not be processed. A common mistake is to not furnish the address for your insurance policy.

To correct a previously submitted form you must go again to the University Forms area, but this time you need to select the completed form at the bottom (it doesn’t look like a hyperlink, but it is one!). Then simply reopen the form you submitted previously and add the needed information. Twenty-four hours later, your charges should be updated.

For additional help or information about insurance, email Molly Hickok at mhickok@georgefox.edu.

President Baker reflects on the times in ‘The Spirit of the Age’

July 24th, 2016

The following is a message from President Robin Baker, who has written a blog piece in response to recent national and world events …

It is a difficult season in our world, and I hope you will take a few minutes to read my own reflections in this blog piece. In addition, many in the academic community are thinking about the problems we face locally and nationally and how we will engage students. Although you may not agree with all of this person’s comments in this Inside Higher Ed article, I found her suggestions helpful.
