Faculty Connection Assignment

Over the next few weeks, first-year students have been asked to contact a faculty member.

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to help each student enrolled in LIBA 100 make a meaningful connection with a faculty member during their first semester and to gather information and to seek your thoughts as an expert on a topic they are researching for the writing studio.

The Task
Students are asked to set up a 10-minute interview with a faculty member to happen before the eighth week of the term. Students will come to the meeting with a set of questions they developed in their writing studio.

The Process
Students should meet with at least one other faculty member besides his or her LIBA professor – preferably someone who teaches in a discipline they are interested in.

If a student has already a declared major, they should have a faculty advisor listed in her or his student record. This would be a good person to connect with.

If they don’t know what their major is yet, then they are asked to talk with a faculty member in any course they are taking.

To meet with the faculty member, they are asked to:

  • Find out where his or her office is and check their office door to find out when they have scheduled office hours
  • Find out if they are able to come back during their posted office hours
  • Come by during office hours, then we have asked them to email the professor and request another meeting time

We have also suggested that they check with the administrative assistant in the department office. In some cases, administrative assistants can schedule appointments for students to meet with particular faculty members.
