In order to promote equitable hiring practices and inclusivity in the workplace, and to further encourage the Be Known promise to our students, George Fox offers Search Advocate Training. The workshop establishes a theoretical foundation of current research about implicit bias and diversity, information about the changing legal landscape in hiring, and an overview of inclusive employment principles.

This summer the university mourned the loss of beloved photography professor John Bennett, who died in a tragic accident on May 23.

The Office of Spiritual & Intercultural Life and the Department of Art and Design invite you to join us for a service of remembrance celebrating the life and legacy of John Bennett. The service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101.

All are welcome.

The Fall Women’s Salad Luncheon is just around the corner! It will be held Monday, Oct. 2, in Canyon Commons 101-102 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Ruth Baker invites all women of the George Fox community (staff, faculty and administrators), as well as female spouses, to join us. Please come and meet the women who are new to our community and catch up with others you might not often see.

It is a come-and-go event, and Bon Appetit will be providing a lovely spread for your enjoyment. Take advantage of this time to connect and enjoy a delicious meal. There is no charge to attend.

Are you first aid-trained and certified? If so, we need you to volunteer to work at the first aid tent during the six home football games this season!

Two volunteers are needed for each home game, so if you can do all or some of them, please contact Mark Stone at 503-554-2090 or e-mail him at mstone@georgefox.edu.

The dates of the games are Sept. 16, Sept. 23, Sept. 30 (a 7 p.m. game), Oct. 14, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.

Bonnie Jerke, longtime director of career services at George Fox, passed away over the summer after a lengthy battle with cancer. She loved the Lord deeply and served George Fox students, faculty and staff very well for many, many years before retiring six years ago. She was a wonderful colleague and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Bonnie’s friends are organizing a celebration and remembrance of Bonnie on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 5 p.m. at Jaquith Park in Newberg. There will be a potluck lunch at 1 p.m., and those attending are asked to bring a dish to share with others. It will be a “come-and-go” event with a time of sharing after the lunch. Those organizing this event wanted to invite Bonnie’s colleagues and friends from the university community as well. They are asking that people RSVP on Bonnie’s Facebook page under the invite post from Linda Byrd.

Please continue to pray for Bonnie’s family and friends during this time of grief and loss.

Pianist Sahun Hong, winner of the prestigious Vendome Prize and a Portland Piano International Rising Star artist, will present a free recital in Bauman Auditorium tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will feature works by Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin, as well as the world premiere of two new pieces by George Fox faculty composer Brent Weaver, commissioned by Portland Piano International.

The Office of the President and the William Penn Honors Program invite you to hear renowned C.S. Lewis scholar Michael Ward speak on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Best known for his book Planet Narnia, Ward’s lecture “The Heavens Are Telling The Glory Of God: C.S. Lewis, Narnia, and the Planets” will be followed by a reception and book signing in the Bauman lobby.

Nichole Drew, a talent development manager the past four years with Enterprise Holdings Inc. who has 13-plus years of management and human resources experience, has joined the university as its first director of employee empowerment.

Drew will be a key leader in the university’s new Innovation and Empowerment division, which aligns employee empowerment (formerly HR), information technology, data analytics, strategic planning and innovation. As the employee empowerment leader, Drew will give special focus to talent development and hiring. She will also oversee the main HR functions of the university.

At The Future of Libertarianism and Conservatism Conference, seven thoughtful libertarians and conservatives from around the nation will address these three major policy areas and the future of the political right. Students will be invited to ask questions, discuss presentations and debate these issues with speakers and with each other. The conference will conclude with representatives from four major conservative and libertarian organizations describing programs, internships and scholarships they offer that can help college students jumpstart their careers.

You do NOT have to be a conservative or libertarian to come to this event, and students and employees from all backgrounds and perspectives are welcome. We invite participants to enter into a robust but polite dialogue about these important issues as we look to the future.

The Office of Spiritual Life is taking a love offering for Friendswood Friends Church in Houston, Texas. Friendswood Friends is a member of the Evangelical Friends Church-Mid America Yearly Meeting. The town of Friendswood was significantly impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and the church is working to address the many needs in the community.

In chapel this past week, we collected money from students to send along, and we want to extend to staff and faculty the same opportunity to join our students in blessing the church in their relief efforts. Please bring your cash donation to the Office of Spiritual Life by Sept. 12. Because this is a love offering, these donations are not tax-deductible.
