As service animals and emotional support animals become more common in public venues, a few guidelines will be helpful to promote positive experiences for students, faculty and staff within the George Fox  community. These guidelines are intended to protect the rights and safety of all community members.

No one should interact with a service animal or emotional support animal unless given permission by the handler.

In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, employees may ask two specific questions: (1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person’s disability (see these ADA guidelines).

If a dog is not trained to perform work or a task, an employee may ask the handler not to bring the animal into the room or building. Emotional support animals that provide comfort but do not perform a task are not service animals.

Faculty members: Are you interested in collaborating more with the Disability Services Office (DSO) to help your students? Come to “Supporting Students with Disabilities: The Faculty-DSO Partnership” on Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Ross 140.

University faculty and the DSO are both vital in providing support to students with disabilities. After hearing a summary of the services offered by the DSO, the group will ask questions, share experiences, and consider how faculty and the DSO might form an even stronger partnership to support students with disabilities.

We are excited to expand our medical education programs with the launch of a physician assistant (PA) program in 2021. Currently, we are seeking health care partners to do PA clerkships for our students, which need to be identified by March to meet national program accreditation requirements. You have a chance to be a part of this wonderful initiative!

PAs offer valuable and versatile medical skills and serve in a wide variety of roles, from primary care to emergency medicine to behavioral health. Our PA program will give students critical hands-on training through clerkships at hospitals and clinics across Oregon and beyond.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, the remaining tickets (limited to two per person) will be available to those who sign up on the waitlist. If you find you are not able to attend, please return your tickets for another employee’s use.

Both classical and familiar tunes will fill Bauman Auditorium when a Monster Piano Concert takes the stage for the 14th annual Bösendorfer Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 6.

The evening will feature 18 performers playing eight pianos, on many occasions simultaneously, and the university’s Rodgers organ. Those performing include the University Keyboard Ensemble, alumni and students from professor Kenn Willson’s piano studio. Some selections will feature as many as 16 pianists playing at one time.

Students and employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket. Additional tickets may be purchased for $12 (general admission), $8 (seniors and alumni) and $6 (students and children under 12). They may be purchased online at this link or by calling 503-554-3844.

A training session for Cascade Server, the system used to edit the university website, will be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The Graduate School of Physical Therapy is excited to present its sixth annual research symposium on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101 and 102.

Physical therapy doctoral faculty and third-year students will showcase various rehabilitation research topics. David Cimbora, PhD, dean of the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, will present the keynote address. Light refreshments will be served.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and there will be several important events happening on our campus to promote awareness and education. A team of Title IX Deputy Coordinators and students are planning the events for the month.

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “King’s Speech: Preaching Reconciliation in a World of Violence and Chasm,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, in Hoover 105.

Presenting will be George Fox’s own Sunggu Yang, an assistant professor of Christian ministries. He is the author of two books, King’s Speech: Preaching Reconciliation in a World of Violence and Chasm (2019) and Evangelical Pilgrims from the East: Faith Fundamentals of Korean American Protestant Diasporas (2016), and two books that are in progress, Picasso and Preaching: An Aesthetic Homiletic for the 21st Century and Sacred Waters: Pastoral Essays for Aspiring Preachers.
