All are welcome to attend a research seminar presented by engineering faculty candidate Dr. Hector Medina on Thursday, May 29, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in EHS 125.
Dr. Medina’s seminar will address two subjects – one related to missionary work of installing Christian radio studios around the world (25 percent of time allocated) and the other to his research, “Where do Random Rough Surfaces Fail?” (25 percent of time allocated)
Following is an abstract to the research talk:
“Roughness is ubiquitous and it is introduced on material surfaces either by spontaneous degradation, manufacturing processes, or intentionally for engineering purposes. However, under certain loading conditions, surface’s topography coupled with material’s degree of brittleness can significantly compromise the efficiency of energy production, the safety and reliability of components, and ultimately increase of costs. To the engineer, a relevant task is to be able to predict the mechanical impacts of such degradation as early as possible.
The complexity of a random configuration renders difficult the problem of analytically finding relationships between surface parameters and markers indicative of mechanical failure. Another difficulty is the reproducibility of replicates of specimens possessing random rough surfaces, for destructive testing followed by statistical analysis.
An experimental technique to produce highly controlled replicates of random rough surfaces (including modeling of degradation growth) was developed and used to experimentally and statistically solved the aforementioned problem. An empirical relationship was derived between stress concentration factor and the root-mean-square roughness (RMS) and auto correlation length (ACL) of a slightly roughened surface.
In order to strengthen our results, an analytical solution was sought by setting up and solving a boundary-value problem involving traction-free random rough surfaces, using a perturbation method, assuming elastic and isotropic conditions. The exact analytical solution was found which agrees very well with experimental and Finite Element Analysis results.”

Organizers at Wild Canyon Games are again seeking the support of George Fox students and employees for the organization’s annual event at Washington Family Ranch May 30 through June 1.
The sixth annual Wild Canyon Games will bring together hundreds of individuals from all over the country for a weekend of friendly competition. The exclusive team-building event, affiliated with Young Life, is designed to promote camaraderie and business development through athletic competition.
Volunteers are needed to assist in the kitchens and dining halls. Room and board are covered; transportation to the camp is not provided. Visit wildcanyongames.org/volunteers or contact Anna Phou at anna.phou@gmail.com to learn more.
All are invited to a special farewell party for Clint, Sarah, Madi and Kai Baldwin. We are renting out Chapters after hours on Sunday, May 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. Drop in anytime to enjoy a special drink on us and to send the Baldwins out with much love.
If you have questions, contact Cary or Kayin Griffith at cgriffith@georgefox.edu.
Do you want to be a part of helping design and implement a day of service that can become lifelong service? The Serve Day Committee is seeking volunteers to be involved in the following committees:

Rebecca Hernandez has been hired to be George Fox University’s next chief diversity officer! She is currently associate dean of intercultural development and educational partnerships at Goshen College. Prior to that, she served at Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing, Center for Health Disparities Research.
Rebecca has a teacher’s heart and a love for students and learning. She is also an accomplished scholar and speaker. Rebecca has a PhD from Oregon State University in human development and family studies, a masters of public administration from Portland State University, and a bachelor of arts in secondary education, social studies, from Southeastern College in Lakeland, Fla.
We are very excited to have Rebecca join us at George Fox beginning July 1, 2014!
Please welcome Rebecca Hernandez to our community!

The College of Engineering invites you to join us for a research seminar, “Robust Parafoil Terminal Guidance Using Massively Parallel Processing,” presented by engineering faculty candidate Dr. Nathan Slegers. The presentation is scheduled from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in EHS 125.
Here is an abstract of the presentation:
Terminal guidance of autonomous parafoils is a difficult problem in which wind uncertainty and system underactuation are major challenges. Existing strategies almost exclusively use impact error as the criterion for optimality. Practical airdrop systems, however, must also include other criteria that may be even more important than impact error for some missions, such as ground speed at impact or constraints imposed by drop zones with restrictions on flight patterns. Furthermore, existing guidance schemes determine terminal trajectories using deterministic wind information and may result in a solution that works in ideal wind but may be sensitive to variations.
This seminar develops a guidance strategy that uses massively parallel Monte Carlo simulation performed on a graphics processing unit to rank candidate trajectories in terms of robustness to wind uncertainty. The result is robust guidance, as opposed to optimal guidance. Through simulation and experimental results, the proposed scheme proves more robust in realistic dynamic wind environments compared with previous optimal trajectory planners that assume perfect knowledge of a constant wind.
Jamie Noling-Auth has been hired to be George Fox University’s next university pastor/dean of spiritual life, inclusion and leadership!
She is currently associate campus pastor/director for discipleship ministries at Azusa Pacific University and has been in that role since 2005. Prior to that, she served as director of student ministries at Gordon College, coordinator of the institute for leadership studies at Vanguard University, and senior admissions counselor at Westmont College.

Both the men’s and women’s locker rooms in the Wheeler Sports Center are closed for the summer months (May through August). The women’s locker room is not under construction but is being used to store the lockers from the men’s locker room. The women’s coaches locker room will be left unlocked for temporary use during this time.
