John Brown professor speaks on campus this Thursday

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “Defending Faith: The Politics of the Christian Conservative Legal Movement,” at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, in Hoover 102.

Daniel Bennett, an assistant professor of political science at John Brown University, will make the presentation. Bennett’s research is focused on the intersection of American politics, law and religion. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from George Fox, then worked for a year in the audit and inventory management industry before starting work on his doctorate. His PhD is in political science from Southern Illinois University. He recently published his first book, Defending Faith: The Politics of the Christian Conservative Legal Movement.

All university women invited to self-defense class this Wednesday

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, residence life will offer a women’s self-defense class from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for George Fox students and employees (location TBA). Teaching it will be an officer in the Newberg-Dundee Police Department who has offered these classes in the local community for the last decade.

The class size will be limited. Female students can sign up (free of charge) in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center. Participants will also be required to to sign a waiver form in order to participate. All participants need to be 18 years or older as of Dec. 6.

The class will involve a mixture of listening and practice. The instructor is able to modify and adapt techniques to match most physical limitations, so please do not self-select out of this training due to physical limitations.

Meal Plan information for spring 2018

Meal plans have been rolled over for the spring semester, and charges have been applied to your bill. Students who are eligible to change their meal plan for the spring semester will be able to do so starting Monday, Dec. 18. After this date, please log in to your Housing & Meal Plan Intent Form to make this change. Keep in mind that students living on campus are eligible for meal plans based on the number of completed credits earned.

If you are expecting to change your meal plan for the spring semester and you don’t have the options you were hoping to find, you may need to wait until all your grades have been entered to complete this change. Grades are generally due by Dec. 25. Changes made after Jan. 8, 2018, may be subject to our refund policy. The final deadline for all declining meal plan changes will be Friday, Jan. 19, 2018.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact Jere Witherspoon (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316) in the student life office. This Thursday Dec. 7, come support George Fox theatre’s honor society, Alpha Psi Omega, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the MOD Pizza in Sherwood (21370 S.W. Langer Farms Pkwy., #132). This fundraiser will help us raise money to go to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in February.

MOD will give 20 percent of what you spend back to us if you show our flier, so spread the news! College of Business hosts portrait shoot tomorrow morning

The portrait shoot is free. It is scheduled between 9 and 11:15 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) on the first floor of the Hoover Academic Building. Your portrait will be added to the portrait walls in the College of Business. Please sign up here.
