Update to Bruin home athletic events

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Due to the weather situation, there have been a number of changes to the Bruin sports schedules for the rest of the weekend. Here is the schedule as of 10:45 a.m. Thursday morning:

Thursday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. – Women’s basketball vs. Puget Sound, Wheeler Sports Center/Miller Gym (NWC Tournament)
Friday, Feb. 25, noon – Women’s tennis vs. Pacific Lutheran, Tualatin Hills Tennis Center, Beaverton, Ore.
Saturday, Feb. 26, 10:30 a.m. – Men’s and women’s track and field in Frank Haskins Quad Duel, Colcord Field
Saturday, Feb. 26, 7 p.m. – Women’s basketball vs. TBA (tentative)

Friday’s women’s tennis match was originally scheduled for 3:30 at the GFU campus courts but has been moved. The women’s tennis team was also supposed to host Linfield on Saturday, but the Linfield series has been swapped; the Bruins will go to Linfield this Saturday (since they have indoor courts), and the Wildcats will now come to George Fox on March 26.

If the women’s basketball team wins its Thursday game in the NWC Tournament, the location of Saturday’s championship game will be determined by the other semifinal game, Whitman at Lewis & Clark. If Whitman wins, George Fox will host on Saturday; if Lewis & Clark wins, the Saturday game will be in Portland.

George Fox’s baseball games this weekend (three games against various opponents at the University of Portland) and the softball games at PLU and UPS are still pending.

For updates on each sport and additional information, contact the sports information office at ext. 2926 or visit the Bruins’ website regularly at gfubruins.com.

Snow and ice in forecast this week – Feb. 2011

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Snow and icy conditions are in the forecast for this week. We caution you to walk carefully on icy sidewalks and to avoid walking beneath trees whose branches may fall due to snow or high winds. Many of you will be driving home in the next few days, and we want to caution you to slow down and give lots of room between you and the car ahead of you. Please be sure to check the weather forecast and road conditions before you leave.

In case of a weather-related campus closure, we want to make sure you have the information you need.

Weather Closure Policy

On rare occasions, classes may need to be canceled and offices closed due to adverse weather conditions or for other emergency reasons.

The provost decides if conditions warrant canceling classes or closing offices for the Newberg campus and the Portland and Salem centers. (Closure decisions in Boise and Redmond are made by local administrators.)

Major considerations are road conditions, ice, utility service disruption, and how long the severe weather or emergency is likely to last. Decisions on day classes are announced by 6:15 a.m., if possible. Most decisions on evening classes are posted by 2:15 p.m..

In no circumstances should employees or students put themselves in danger in an attempt to get to campus.

To find out if a closure decision has been made when bad weather occurs:

* Listen to local radio and television stations
* Call Newsline, the university’s recorded announcements, at 503-554-3868
* Call the George Fox switchboard at 503-538-8383
* Check television and newspaper Web sites:

IJM chapter meets again Wednesday

Monday, February 21st, 2011

The university’s International Justice Mission chapter is meeting again at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Le Shana lobby. The IJM deals in large part with the issue of sex-trafficking on both a global and local scale and what steps we can do to combat it. Two major focuses of the chapter are prayer and how we can get involved in the community.

Please come and see how you can get involved as well. Questions? Contact Stephen Kenyon at skenyon09@georgefox.edu.
