Interested in launching a fair trade student group on campus? An objective of Fair Trade is to cultivate the consciousness that will help shape a global economy based on justice and integrity. Fair Trade promotes economic systems that empower producers so that they can reap fair benefits for their labors.

Paul Anderson (Religious Studies) and Brian Bews will be hosting discussions of four crises in the early church, providing a state-of-the-art analysis of the Gospel of John’s audience. From there, new insights into the narrative will be explored, including reflecting on how readers today are drawn into a transformative dialogue with Jesus from the Gospel of John. All are welcome!

The university’s International Justice Mission chapter is hosting another meeting this Wednesday, March 16, at 7:50 p.m. in the Le Shana lobby. The chapter deals in large part with the issue of sex-trafficking on both a global and local scale, and what steps we can do to combat it.

Two major focuses of the chapter are prayer and how we can get involved in the community. Please come and see how you can get involved as well!

Fall 2011 housing selection will be online today through Friday, March 18th. The form will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

Your housing code can be found on the first page of the Housing Groups Sign-ups form. One person from each group will fill out the form with the housing codes of the whole group.

• Go to the https://webservices.georgefox.edu/forms and login.
• The housing sign-ups form should appear on the left.
• The forms will walk you through the process:
  • One person enters housing codes for the group
  • Confirm your roommate choices
  • Rank order your preferences

If you do not have a group to sign up with, you can go through the housing process as an individual. In this case, rather than placing you according to your credit ranking, we would work with you to identify a suitable spot to live.

If you would like help going through the process, there is a computer set up in the Student Life Office. You may use this computer to go through sign-ups with one of the housing staff to help answer questions.

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is accepting applications for next year’s ARC consultants. Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply; having multiple disciplines represented strengthens the ARC’s ability to support a wide range of students.

There will be a social session following the seminar with refreshments for all attendees.

Need help finding and getting an internship?

GEED 216 – Becoming Workplace Familiar: Getting an Internship. This 1-credit course is for sophomores and juniors. It focuses on exploring occupations through information interviews, internships, job shadowing and professional organizations. Exposure to the workplace and readiness for graduate school admission are primary objectives.

Believe it or not it is the middle of the semester. Now is the time to take an assessment of your perception of how you are doing in each of your classes.

Mid-term grades, while not a part of your final semester grade report, are an important indicator of how you are doing academically.
Mid-term grades are meant to encourage students to get in touch with their professors.

There are many resources here at GFU to get you the help you need to be academically successful.

Have you checked your mid-term grade report? Depending upon what you find you need to consider taking some action.

You can review mid-semester grades now if they have been entered by your instructor(s):

1. Log in to MyGFU

2. Select Student Center

3. From the Other Academic drop-down (in the Academics section of the start page), select Grades

4. Select the term and the Mid-Term Grades tab (next to the Official Grades tab which will be the default display).

The Mid-Term Grades tab ONLY appears once at least one grade has been entered for you by an instructor.

Now you need to determine what to do next:
Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).

The last date to withdraw is Friday, MARCH 18, 2011, at 5 p.m.

You can usually go below 12 hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid.

Withdrawal results in a W on your transcript but does not factor into GPA. If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA.

Next Steps:

1. Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

2. Meet with each professor, especially those teaching courses you’re struggling in. Even if your professor doesn’t post mid-term grades, find out from the professor what your grade is.

3. Meet with your advisor to discuss options.

4. Use labs, help sessions, & the ARC.

5. If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their offices.

6. Plan well for Fall semester.

7. Consider whether you are in the right pathway in terms of a major or career.
You might want to enroll in GEED 214: Claim Your Career Calling, a 1-hour online course or meet with someone in the Career Services office.

Pat Stone, a psychiatrist, Vietnam veteran and expert on veterans affairs, will speak Monday, March 14, on the challenges faced by veterans from the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars and ways that we can respond and better support them as they reach for the American Dream.

Have you wondered what it would be like to have more freedom with your personal finances? Have you ever been stressed about your financial situation? If so, come find out what you need to know about money. You’ll be surprised how simple this process can be.

The workshop will provide information on a variety of personal finance topics, including budgeting, credit cards and student loans.

Don’t miss your chance to participate in Dinner for Eight! There are only a few spaces left!

Taking place both March 15 and April 5 from 6:30-9 p.m., Dinner for Eight provides students with the opportunity to connect with George Fox alumni and learn about their experiences after Fox. Up to eight students will visit the home of an alumnus for a home-cooked dinner and conversation focused around careers and other aspects of life after graduation.

Some of the career fields represented by the alumni participating on March 15 are education, biology, graphics, retail, construction, manufacturing, marketing, mediation and pharmacy.

To participate in Dinner for Eight, register online at this link. The event costs $2 per person at the time of registration. Each participant will receive a $5 Chapters gift card when they participate in Dinner for Eight.

On the registration form you are able to list other students that you would prefer to participate with. We encourage you to talk with your friends and list one another. Although we are unable to guarantee your requests, we will make every effort to do so.
