Sign up now for MLK Day of Service on Jan. 16

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Register now for the MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012!

This day is similar to Serve Day except we collaborate with 10 other Portland-area universities. Students, employees and those with children over 6 years of age can participate.

History
Three years ago, George Fox started collaborating with area colleges to put on the first service day of its kind in the Portland area, helping to bring unity among schools and to service the needs of the city. Every year, about 1,200 college students join together. We start with a rally, then divide up into teams, mixing with students from various colleges, to do service projects. This year our focus is on access to education.

Our Role
This is an amazing opportunity for us to be a light as leaders and to share Christ’s love through tangible ways of service and collaboration with people from all walks of life. We serve others because we first serve God. Our goal is to bring 120 participants from George Fox this year.

Before signing up, please note the schedule below:

  • 7 a.m. – Participants check in at George Fox
  • 7:30 a.m. – Bus from campus to Roosevelt High School
  • 9 a.m. – Rally
  • 10:30 a.m. – Serve projects
  • 3 p.m. – Buses/vans will leave and head back to Newberg. We will be back no later than 5 p.m.

Breakfast, lunch and a T-shirt are included in this volunteer event! For more info and to sign-up, click here.

For questions or accommodations, the university’s rep is Shelley Yonemura, director of multicultural student programs. You can contact her at syonemura@georgefox.edu or ext. 2318.

Thank a Professor

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Is there someone at George Fox who has made a difference in your academic career? Someone who ignited a spark to make you want to learn or attend class or who has acted as a role model? Take a moment to write an e-mail, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor (or other person). Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life.

Newberg students can stop by the Student Life office (3rd floor Stevens) front desk or the ARC (MLRC 2nd floor) to pick up a blank card. Of course, one can make or buy one’s own card.

Meal Plan Selection – Spring 2012

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

If you are planning to return to George Fox next semester, please pay special attention to this message about meal plans for the spring 2012 semester.

Starting Jan. 1, 2012, students, who are eligible to do so may change their meal plans in their MyGFU account. (Yes, this is a change from the original message.)

Detailed information about meal plans can be found at this website.

Student Life suggests that EVERYONE confirm their meal plan to be certain that you have the meal plan that you are expecting.

You can change your meal plan and confirm which meal plan you have in your MyGFU account – STUDENT RESOURCES – UNIVERSITY FORMS.

The 21, 14, 10, 10 +Flex, 7 and No Meal Plan all roll over from the fall to the spring semesters.

The 35 Block and the All Flex Plan do NOT roll over. These convert to the No Meal Plan. If you want to renew the All Flex or 35 Block Plan you must add these meal plans to your account in MyGFU.

Please Note: All changes must be processed no later than Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. However, students can always add a meal plan through out the semester by contacting Jere Witherspoon in the student life office.

Accommodations to the meal plan are provided only through documented medical conditions.

All questions about the meal plans should be directed to Jere Witherspoon.

And now, an essay about the meal plan benefits by Dave Johnstone, associate dean of residence life:

The best part of a meal plan has nothing to do with the quality or nutrition of the food. The attractive part of eating on a meal plan is the opportunity to frequently connect with peers and classmates. Sharing a meal, conversation around the table, debriefing the day or anticipating what might unfold is really the gem of being on a meal plan. Historically and culturally communities have been built around food. I am not sure why it works, but sharing a meal is one of most significant ways to build a relationship, hence it strengthens our community. That in itself is a major benefit for being on the meal plan.
