Semester’s final Peace and Justice Symposium is Thursday

Monday, November 28th, 2011

The last Peace and Justice Symposium of the semester is this Thursday, Dec. 1, from 7:15 to 9 p.m. in the Quaker Heritage Room on the second floor of the MLRC. It will feature Bill Apel (professor emeritus, Linfield College) and Craig Goodworth (George Fox adjunct writing instructor and artist practitioner in residence).

This is a great time to hear two professors talk on a more personal level – outside the classroom – about how peace and justice have been currents forming the trajectories of their personal as well as academic lives.

About our speakers:

Apel is a professor emeritus at Linfield College, having spent many years on the school’s religious studies faculty as well as the college chaplain. His presentation on Thursday night is titled after his most recent book, Signs of Peace: A life of Blessings. For more information on Bill, go to this link.

Goodworth is George Fox’s artist practitioner in residence for the semester. His most recent art exhibition was in the Minthorne Gallery in September and was titled “Jelen and Other Drawings.” He is also an adjunct writing instructor. For more information on Craig, including his “peace testimony,” please visit this link.

We hope to see you there. We’ll have snacks at 7:15 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m.

Questions? Contact Melanie Newell at mnewell@georgefox.edu.

Urban Services conducts winter clothes drive this week

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Urban Services is collecting items for our winter clothes drive this week. We take groups of students into Portland and Salem each week to serve food to the homeless and build relationships with our friends on the streets. Our goal is to share the love of Christ, and part of that is to show care for the very real physical needs of our friends.

We have set up a collection bin outside the ASC offices through Friday, Dec. 2. Some of the things we are hoping to collect are:

  • Sleeping Bags
  • Blankets
  • Large coats
  • Socks
  • Gloves
  • Scarves
  • Hats
  • Men and women’s pants (esp. men’s sizes 32-40)

Thank you so much for your participation!

Feel free to contact Mary Owen (mowen10@georgefox.edu) or Heather Mabry (hmabry07@georgefox.edu) for more information.

God bless,
Mary Owen and Heather Mabry
