‘Race to 2025’ seeking participants

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

I am recruiting two more students to be part of a team of four that compete with other universities in “Race to 2025,” an outdoor missions-focused adventure race Oct 12-14.

As a part of Wycliffe Bible Translator’s goal to spread the Word of God to every tribe, tongue and nation by 2025, this weekend adventure race in Montana seeks to inspire the next generation of missions-minded youth. Teams of four participate by informing their community about the global race to 2025, raising $2,000 in donations for current translation projects, and competing in an outdoor adventure race with eternal impact.

If you are interested or have more questions about this opportunity, contact Mary Owen (mowe10@georgefox.edu)

Check out the website for “Race to 2025” here.

Director of African orphange speaks on campus Sept. 11

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

All are invited to come hear from Lutaaya Abul, director of African Hearts Orphanage in Kampala, Uganda, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in EHS 102.

Lutaaya grew up in the gutters of Kampala, started to attend a church, became involved in music, and started the African Hearts Orphanage. The organization’s target population is children who are living on the street, many of whom have been orphaned by HIV or abandoned or victimized by family violence. Our Juniors Abroad groups visit the orphanage when we travel to East Africa.

The organization currently runs two homes housing former street children in Kampala and Ssenge. Children living in these homes are taught the Bible and are provided with shelter, food, love and education. All are welcome to come hear Lutaaya speak!

If a time of getting away into nature for hiking, thinking, sharing, and just having a good time sounds like a welcome start to your year, come see what Sophilo is all about! We’ll also be brainstorming about what we’d like the club to look like this year, sharing plans and ideas, so if you’re interested in being a part of a group of people thoughtfully encountering life, join us!

We’ll be meeting in the Hoover parking lot at 9:30 a.m., where we’ll load up and head out to Champoeg. We’ll have lunch together, and be back by 4 p.m. So come on out!

To reserve a spot, or if you have any questions, contact Phil Smith at psmith@georgefox.edu. Also, if you are on a meal plan, let us know in your e-mail and INCLUDE YOUR ID NUMBER so that we can feed you. But don’t worry! If you’re not on a meal plan, we’ll still get you lunch, we promise.

Hopefully we’ll see you all soon for a time in nature of relaxing, thinking, sharing and planning for an exciting year of Sophilo!
