Two info meetings planned Tuesday for Cultural Fair

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, the university will host a Cultural Fair – and we’d love to give you the opportunity to share your culture at the big event. This includes cultures from within the U.S.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, we will host two informational meetings for those who wish to host a table at the fair that showcases their culture. If you are interested, join us at 11:40 a.m. or 12:40 p.m. in the International Center/Cultural House. We will have pizza, so join us for lunch and get the details on sharing your culture at the Cultural Fair.

The Cultural Fair will feature students from Asia, Europe, Africa and other parts of America sharing something about their own culture. You do not need to go to other countries or places to experience a different culture – just come to the Cultural Fair. You will have a chance to enjoy wonderful displays, learn something new, and of course experience delicious food from all over the world!

Martin Luther King Day of Service Leaders

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Each year we are excited to be a part of a collaborative effort to serve the community of Portland in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year we are gathering a group of students from each participating school to help lead the day at the various service sites.

Being a leader would mean participating in two meetings (one in November and one in December), prepping the night before, and help lead projects at the various sites on the day of service, Jan. 21.

We are looking for anyone that is wanting to be more involved, is enthusiastic about leading, and has a heart for the meaning of MLK Day of service. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Amber Nelson at nelsona@georgefox.edu as soon as possible!

Mid-Term Grades Information

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

As we speak many of your professors are working to prepare your mid-term grade report. They are due in MYGFU by October 26, 2012.

Mid-term grades are a great tool to assess your progress in a class and help to make plans for the rest of the semester.

Please read the rest of this message carefully!
After October 26, to check your mid-term grades in MYGFU –

CLICK ON ENROLLMENT
CLICK ON VIEW MY GRADES
CLICK ON THE CORRECT TERM
CLICK ON THE MID-TERM GRADES TAB

Depending upon what you see, here are some ideas on what to do next.

Consider whether to withdraw from one or more courses if it looks likely that you’ll get an F (or maybe even a D).

The last date to withdraw is Sunday, November 4, 2012

You can usually go below 12 hours (at this point in the semester) without impacting your financial aid or housing.

However, you should contact representatives in these departments to be certain:

Residence Life – Dave Johnstone – djohnstone@georgefox.edu

Student Financial Services – sfs@georgefox.edu

Withdrawal results in a W on your transcript but does not factor into GPA.

If you were to get an F, it would impact GPA.

Confirm any thoughts of withdrawing from classes with your advisor.

Meet with each professor, especially those teaching the courses you are struggling in.

Even if your professor doesn’t post mid-term grades, find out from each professor what your grade is.

Meet with your advisor to discuss options.

Use Tutoring Sessions & the ARC.

If you think you might have a learning disability, have some assessment done. Contact the Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340 or stop by their offices.

Plan well for Spring semester.

Consider whether you are in the right pathway in terms of a major or career. You might want to enroll in GEED 214: Claim Your Career Calling, a 1-hour online course: This course is offered in the spring semester.
