Seminary student and family in need of assistance

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Dear Friends,

We have a student in the seminary who has some special needs, and I was wondering if any of you might have some ideas about how to help.

Alec Sandu is a Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership student and he began in the fall of 2009. He and his family are from Zimbabwe. His wife and three children (13- and 4-year-old boy, 9-year-old girl) have adjusted well to life in America.

Alec is a pastor in the village of Siadini and a sustenance farmer. He has been pastoring for 14 years and is seeking a graduate education in order to teach and train pastors and laity. His association (First Christ Church – Churches of Christ) hosts two training conferences per year – one for pastors and the other for their congregations. He is returning to Zimbabwe on Aug. 17 for this conference. Unless we find housing for his family, they will return with him as well.

Their host family has paid for their expenses up to this point, but are no longer able to provide for Alec and his family, They are in desperate need of a place to live. If you can help in any way, please let us know. Gil George is managing the search for housing (ggeorge07@georgefox.edu). We are trying to find some part-time employment for Alec also.

Your prayers and ideas are greatly appreciated.

In Christ,
MaryKate Morse (Seminary)

University hosts Aug. 13 symposium about America’s founding

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Two questions concerning early America – “Did America have a Christian founding?” and “Did the founders want separation of church and state?” – will be addressed at a summer symposium hosted on the Newberg campus on Friday, Aug. 13.

Daniel L. Dreisbach, a professor in the Department of Law, Justice and Society at American University who studied philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, will present a lecture, “Thomas Jefferson and the ‘Wall of Separation’ Between Church and State,” from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. There is no charge to attend.

Prior to the lecture, a barbecue and book-signing session are scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the quad. The cost for the barbecue is $13 per person. Joining Dreisbach at the book signing will be Mark David Hall (Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Political Science), a frequent collaborator with Dreisbach. The two coauthored The Sacred Rights of Conscience and teamed with Jeffry H. Morrison to write The Forgotten Founders on Religion and Public Life and The Founders on God and Government. Copies of the books will be available for sale at the signing session.

Registration details and more information are available at veritasschool.net. Seating is limited, so those interested in attending are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The lecture is co-sponsored by the university’s political science department and Veritas School of Newberg.

Host families needed for international students Aug. 18-26

We hope you will consider being a host family. If interested, please contact Dianna McIntyre (dmcintyre@georgefox.edu or ext. 2649) or Alex Pia (apia@georgefox.edu or ext. 2643). If you know of others who might be interested, please let us know so we may contact them.
