Zaher Wahab, professor of education at Lewis and Clark University, will speak about his experiences in Afghanistan at the next Liberal Arts and Critical Issues Forum, scheduled this Monday, Oct. 18, in Hoover 105. Wahab, a senior advisor to the Ministry of Education in Afghanistan, will speak from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m.

The President’s Executive Leadership Team will then select someone for this honor from the nominations submitted. The winner will be announced at the next all-community meeting (to be scheduled in November) and will receive a $100 gift card to The Allison.

This is the last week to apply for the mission-learning trip to Nicaragua. PSYC 399: X-Cultural Experience in Nicaragua is an integration trip to serve and learn from at-risk girls rescued from a life of poverty on the city dump. A tuition remission information session will be presented online at 1 p.m. (PST) Thursday, Oct. 21. The session is meant for anyone who is interested in receiving more information regarding tuition remission, tuition exchange and admissions. Our audience in mind are those who are preparing (either for themselves or someone they know) for undergraduate admissions for the 2011 year. This is a repeat of the on-campus meeting that was held in September.

Thanks to a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) Tournees Festival, the university’s French program and cinema and media communication department are proud to host the first Fox French Film Festival this month.

Five current French-language films will be shown over a period of two weekends, Oct. 22-23 and Oct. 30. A Town Called Panic will show Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m.; the films Welcome and Daratt will be shown Saturday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively; and Coco Before Chanel will show at 6 p.m. and Paris Je T’Aime at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The films will show in EHS 102 and the cost is $3 per movie or $9 for a pass. Tickets can be purchased in advance in Minthorn 205, or at the door.

The festival also will feature French pastries and other desserts made by French students and Terrie Boehr (Family and Consumer Science). There will also be a talkback session with Clint Baldwin (Center for Peace and Justice) during the intermission between Welcome and Duratt, films that deal with issues of immigration and post-war reconciliation.

FACE is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing French-American relations through projects in the arts and education.

The Center for Peace and Justice invites you to the sixth annual Peace Fair and Walk, scheduled to begin with the fair at 2:30 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in McMinnville this Sunday, Oct. 17. At 3:30 p.m., speaker Lisa Shannon will present “War: The Forgotten Women of the Congo.” The remaining time includes songs for peace, a peace walk, and a soup supper until 6:15 p.m.

The university community is invited to “Lend a Hand: One Hour, One World, Many Promises to End Extreme Poverty,” scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in the Cap and Gown Room. The event will feature guest speaker Jason Fileta and is being hosted in conjunction with Micah Challenge, an organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty in the world.

We look forward to a great day of fellowship and community building during our staff conference. The theme of this year’s conference is “Abiding in the Vine: Cultivating the Fruit of the Holy Spirit.” All staff are expected to attend.

Beginning in the fall of 2011, we will be adding a common book component to the First Year Experience program. In preparation, we would like to solicit book recommendations from as many people in our community as possible. Please take some time to recommend one or more books for this program.

After we receive recommendations, the committee will begin the task of narrowing the list down to three to five books that we will all read. The decision will be made by the end of February and announced in March. The criteria will include the following three things:

• Must meet the diversity outcome for the First Year Seminar program, which includes the following:

– Socioeconomic

– Race/ethnicity

– Gender

– Religious

– International

• Books must not be more than 500 pages

• Should spark meaningful dialogue

The university’s Symphonic Band will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in Bauman Auditorium. The concert will feature performances of Yasuhide Ito’s Gloriosa (Gururiyoze) – Symphonic Poem for Band, Frank Techeli’s Shenandoah, Samuel R. Hazo’s Go!, Gordon Jacob’s An Original Suite, and John Philip Sousa’s Hands Across the Sea.

The Symphonic Band will perform under the direction of Patrick Vandehey. Richard Elliott, assistant band director, will conduct the piece “Go!”

The School of Business will host a VIP lecture featuring Richard G. Reiten, retired chief executive officer of Northwest Natural, at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in EHS 102.

Reiten will present on the topic “Ethics and Values – Your Code for the Road.” There is no charge to attend.

Reiten served as CEO of Northwest Natural Gas from 1997 until 2002. He joined the company as president and chief operating officer and was elected to the board in 1996. He was appointed to the additional position of chairman of the board in September 2000, a position he held until 2005.

The 2009-10 yearbooks are in! The books will be available in the SUB starting Wednesday, Oct. 13, and will continue to be available until at least Friday, Oct. 15. These books are free to sophomores, juniors and seniors and are available on a first-come, first-served basis (once they’re gone, they’re gone). You are responsible to get your own book (just look for the table with the yearbooks on it and pick one up).

Exciting new changes are being made to the Christmas celebration for George Fox employees! After experiencing tremendous growth in the number of students and employees over the last 20 years, the long-held campus Christmas celebration is being retired.

The new event will be hosted for George Fox employees (halftime and over) and their spouses (no children, please), and will include free admission to the performing arts department’s Christmas concert, “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.” This spectacular performance, involving more than 175 students, is adding a third on-campus concert this year to accommodate all who want to attend.

The celebration is set for Saturday, Dec. 11. It will include:

• Hors d’oeuvres and dessert, featuring special music, Christmas carols, and a devotional, at 5:30 p.m. in the Stevens Center
• Christmas Concert: “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear,” at 7 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium
