Urgent request to update emergency contact information for FOXALERT

Monday, September 27th, 2010

For the past few years, George Fox  has utilized FOXALERT as a method of notifying the Newberg campus faculty, staff and students in the event of a campus-wide emergency. Each semester we update the FOXALERT database with your current contact information that we download from MyGFU. For this system to work, it is vital that you take a few minutes to update your contact information.

If you have not done so recently, please update your contact information by signing into MyGFU. Following are the steps to take:

  • Login to your MyGFU account
  • Click on SELF SERVICE
  • Click on CAMPUS PERSONAL INFORMATION
  • Click on PHONE NUMBERS
  • On the PHONE TYPE pick list, choose the phone type you are registering.
  • Type in your contact information
  • Click SAVE
  • If you need to add a number, first click on ADD A PHONE NUMBER
  • Make sure you click SAVE after each change

In the near future, we will test FOXALERT as well as give you information on opting in or out to receive text messages. Your safety is very important to us. Please work with us to provide you with timely information should an emergency arise.

If you have questions, please contact Jere Witherspoon (Student Life) at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu.

Sincerely,
Brad Lau, VP of Student Life

‘Eat Local Challenge’ is Tuesday in Klages Dining Room

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Once a year, Bon Appétit issues an “Eat Local Challenge” to all of our chefs. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, come to Klages Dining Room between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and enjoy a lunch that is made completely of ingredients from within a 150-mile radius of the café. This act, while seemingly simple, has far-reaching implications.

Local farmers, who use more sustainable growing practices, act as stewards of the land. By buying from local growers, we can all help support sustainable farming practices that nourish and replenish the local land rather than stripping it. We have the power to ensure that the food we buy is produced in a manner that steers away from pesticides, hormones and antibiotics.

This year’s menu includes:

Soups: Roasted corn bisque and beefy tomato broth with fresh spinach

Entrees: Trager-smoked Carlton Farms pulled pork sliders; oven-roasted blue and Butterball potatoes with summer squash; marinated Draper Valley grilled chicken with local melons and jalapeño sofrito; simple greens with blueberry vinaigrette

Hand food: Oregon albacore tuna tostadas; yellow tomato criolla-roasted fingerling potatoes; crème fresh cabbage saw and pimento d’Espelette

Vegetarian: Ratatouille-stuffed Oregon star tomatoes and cranberry bean and corn succotash

Expo: Leafy spinach salad with pickled Red Zeppelin onions, Yamhill County fried mushrooms, poached blueberries, Fraga Farms chipotle goat cheese and Blossom vinegars honey vinaigrette

Pizza: Pear and gorgonzola or fresh tomato and butcher shop jalapeno cheddar summer sausage

Sweets: Ace High apple bars with Melcher’s Farm hazelnuts; Marylhill Orchards peach cobbler

Please come join us. Cost is only $6.75. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the bounty of our community for everyone not on meal plans.

Newberg peace trail work day scheduled Saturday

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Join us at North Valley Friends Church this Saturday, Sept. 25, to help build and establish the Newberg peace trail. Visit the project website to learn of the vision and plan. If interested, please send us an e-mail R.S.V.P. at peaceandjustice@georgefox.edu. We’ll meet at 9 a.m. outside in the Stevens Center parking lot to carpool. If you have a car, please bring it. You will be working on putting the language and quote boards on the peace poles, preparing the ground and building the forms for the bench pads, and working on the path leading from the walking trail to the labyrinth. There may also be space for you to assist with labyrinth design.

We will work until around mid-afternoon, depending on how many people assist with the project. Lunch will be provided to all of the workers.
