The women of the George Fox community (staff, faculty and administrators, as well as female spouses) are invited to the Fall Ladies’ Luncheon on Monday, Oct. 5, hosted by Ruth Baker from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101–103.

This year’s theme, “Rooted to Flourish,” draws from Psalm 1:2-3 and the picture of a life rooted in God’s Word, continually nourished and bearing fruit in its season. Our purpose flows from our rootedness.

We are delighted to welcome Faith Carter as our guest speaker for a short devotional and prayer at noon. Faith is a retired educator and pastor who has served in women’s ministry and local and global outreach. She and her husband, Don, continue to serve the George Fox community, with Don serving as chair of the university’s board of trustees.

Come enjoy a delicious meal, connect with other women in our community, and spend time reflecting on what it means to be rooted in the Lord and flourish in every season.

People from across the political spectrum describe themselves as patriotic. But they often have trouble seeing each other as patriotic. Come to a Community Conversation in Canyon Commons at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, Sept. 30, to get a chance to listen to – and talk to – people who think of patriotism differently.

Clarify where we all agree and where we disagree, and why. Come away better able to recognize when others are being patriotic, better able to join with others in love for our country, and better able to fairly and accurately articulate the differences among us.

You’re invited to join us for an off-campus retreat during the beginning of mid-semester break on Thursday, Oct. 15 through Saturday, Oct. 17.

These retreats are thoughtfully designed for a small group of 10-12 students and will take place off campus. During the retreat, participants can expect to enter into a slower pace to engage in various spiritual practices that refresh their mind, body and spirit.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to create connections with fellow students and staff, fostering a sense of community and support.

You must fill out an application to express interest in attending. You will receive a confirmation email to let you know you’ve been selected to attend, and then you will secure your spot with $20. The $20 covers food, lodging and transportation. The last day to sign up is Oct. 12 (or until spots are filled).

Whether you’re a seasoned academic building survivalist or someone whose fire drill strategy usually involves hiding under their desk and hoping it’s a false alarm, the university’s Safety Committee has a brief reality check for you. We’re launching the Pre-Evacuation Drill Mini-Challenge – a high-stakes, low-effort test of your emergency preparedness skills.

No, you don’t need to scale the clock tower or do a 50-yard dash past the Mama Bear statue. You just need to show us you actually know where your nearest exit is (and that your evacuation plan involves more than just bringing your favorite mug).

Our incentive? We want to encourage you to be proactive. You are responsible for your safety and the safety of those near you. Our job is to help you access that information. Learn before the alarm goes off or you need safety equipment.

How to Enter

1. Print and complete the official mini-challenge checklist at this link, fill out your answers, and make sure your name is legible.
2. Fold it, pop it in campus mail, and direct it to Safety Committee Box 6443. (Yes, actual campus mail; think of it as retro emergency communication practice).
3. Deadline: Drop it in the mail slot by Oct. 2. One-week blitz, so don’t delay!

What’s in it for you?

Besides the warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing you won’t accidentally trap yourself in the creepiest-in-the-dark-with-fire-doors-slammed-shut building during a drill, every completed challenge dropped into Box 6443 enters you into a raffle for campus prizes. Keeping your computer fast and secure takes just a quick restart! While our team regularly pushes background updates, they cannot complete installation until your computer reboots.

Why a Restart matters: Clicking Shut Down puts your machine into hibernation and won’t finish updates. A true Restart clears system memory, resolves background glitches, and applies all pending security patches.

How to restart:

• Windows: Go to Start menu > Power icon > Restart
• Mac: Click the Apple icon > Restart

Note: Simply closing your laptop lid or locking your screen puts your device to sleep and will not complete updates.

Action requested:

1. Save your work before restarting.
2. Restart weekly – such as every Friday afternoon – to avoid workflow interruptions.
