Donate your unwanted reusable items to Phase II

Thursday, April 23rd, 2026

Do you have reusable items that you don’t want to take home? In an effort to keep dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of resources, the Office of Plant Services will collect these items to give them a second life.

We are happy to accept reusable donations from Monday, April 27, through Monday, May 4.

Please place all donated items in bags inside the collection barrels located in residence hall lobbies across campus. For those in apartments and houses, items can be brought to the receiving bay located to the left of the main entrance at Plant Services (#53 on the campus map) during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), during finals week.

Please note that we do not accept trash, damaged or dirty items, undergarments, socks, liquids or chemicals. However, you may place labeled chemicals in a bag or box next to the donation barrels for proper disposal. All sealed, unexpired food should be taken directly to the Bruin Community Pantry in Lewis Apartment #1.

Additional guidelines for large items include:

  • Electronics: Working appliances and electronics can be placed next to the lobby collection barrels or brought to Plant Services.
  • Large Non-working Items: These should be placed next to the outside dumpsters and labeled “broken” for collection. Do not place items where they could pose a trip hazard or impede traffic flow.
  • Prohibited Trash: By law, computers, monitors and TVs cannot be placed in trash dumpsters.

Questions? Contact the plant services office at 503-554-2010 during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Thank you!

Study with a plant in the Murdock Library

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026

Studies show that indoor plants improve well-being and may even enhance focus and productivity. We just think they’re pleasant to be around.

Beginning today (Thursday) through Tuesday, April 28, borrow a plant from the library front desk to keep you company while studying in Murdock. You can also enter our raffle to take one of them home with you at the end of the program.

All plants are cuttings of larger library plants. The raffle will occur at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, with notifications going out to winners no later than the next morning.

Feel free to reach out to Kate Wimer at kwimer@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Bring your child to participate in a Child Development final exam

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026

Hello all! I am recruiting parents with children for the Child Development (PSYC 311) final exam next week. The aim of the day is for students to interact with kids, and then have a discussion about class concepts that they observed.

Kids of any age are welcome, although I know older kids are likely to be in school (although it could possibly be a homeschool field trip).

If you have or know any kids who would be available, please consider bringing them in. Parents/grandparents and kids will be there for about an hour.

  • Date: Tuesday, April 28
  • Time: 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
  • Location: Hoover 102

This is one of the best learning experiences for the students, and the kids seem to have fun too! Please contact me, Manesha Ram, at mram@georgefox.edu and let me know if you’re interested in coming or if you have any questions.

Wellness Wednesday: Harmony in the Workplace: Balancing Mood and Focus

Tuesday, April 21st, 2026

Music is a versatile tool that can transform both your mood and your workflow. Beyond just filling the silence, listening to music you enjoy triggers the release of dopamine, providing a natural emotional lift and helping to lower stress during a busy day.

From a practical standpoint, background music is most effective during routine or repetitive tasks, where it helps maintain a steady rhythm and provides a “sound shield” against office distractions. By intentionally choosing your soundtrack, you can create a personal sanctuary that nurtures your mental well-being while keeping your energy levels high.

The Art of Mindful Listening: Protecting Your Mental Energy

To get the most out of your workday audio, it’s important to recognize when your brain needs a different kind of support. While upbeat tracks are great for energy, tasks requiring deep concentration or complex problem-solving can be hindered by lyrical music, which competes for your brain’s processing power and leads to mental fatigue.

To support your cognitive well-being, practice matching your audio to your mental state: opt for calming instrumental tracks or ambient “pink noise” when you need to focus, and don’t be afraid to embrace silence to prevent overstimulation. Being mindful of what you listen to ensures that your environment supports your productivity and well-being without draining your mental reserves.

Don’t forget to restart your computer to complete your monthly updates!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2026

We’ve successfully pushed the latest round of essential security and performance updates to all systems. These updates are crucial for maintaining a secure and efficient computing environment.

However, these changes will not take full effect until your computer has been properly restarted.

What you need to do:

  1. Save your work: Ensure all open documents and projects are saved.
  2. Restart your machine: Click the Start menu, select Power, and choose Restart. (Note: Simply logging out or shutting down the lid is not enough.)

A quick restart ensures the installation is finalized, patching vulnerabilities and activating important system enhancements. A restart can be done at the end of your day. Best practice is to restart once a week.

Thank you for helping us keep our systems running smoothly and securely! Questions? Contact Amy Yates at ayates@georgefox.edu
