Encourage students to apply for SpiL trips

SpiL Trips are an opportunity for students to engage in experiential credit for Spiritual Life while also engaging in service with ears, eyes and hearts wide open. Students will work alongside people and organizations modeling Christian community development in under-resourced communities and oppressive environments.

This spring break, teams will serve at:

  • California/Mexico border with The Global Immersion Project
  • Seattle, Washington, with Urban Impact
  • Wapato, Washington, with Mending Wings at the Yakama Indian Reservation
  • Yosemite, California, with the Tuolumne River Trust

Encourage students to apply here by tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 2). More details can be found on this webpage.

The program requires students to attend all pre-meetings, the weeklong trip, and post-meeting. Attendance of all these events is mandatory in order to receive chapel credit.

Wear red or blue for swing dance tonight

The Swing Dance Club’s theme for tonight (Saturday) is red vs. blue. Wear either red or blue and see what side is the winning team with the most of the same color!

Beginner lessons start at 6:30 p.m., followed by intermediate at 7 p.m. and open dance at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome to join us!

Deadline for student newspaper applications is tonight

Do you have a knack for writing or photography and want to get paid for it?

The student newspaper, The Crescent, is seeking writers and photographers to join the team this semester! We accept a variety of content, ranging anywhere from classic news stories and creative writing to comics and opinion pieces.

The deadline to apply is tonight (Saturday) at 11:59 p.m. If you’re interested, email us a short bio and any prior experience you’ve had at asccrescent@georgefox.edu. We’ll get back to you to set up an interview.

2019 W-2 forms are now available

The 2019 W-2’s are now available to view in MyGeorgeFox. Navigate to MyGeorgeFox; on the employee homepage, click “Payroll”; under “W-2/W-2c”, you will see “View W-2/W-2c Forms.”

Tickets to Oregon Symphony will be available Monday

George Fox will host the Oregon Symphony for its 33nd appearance in Bauman Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m.

A limited number of tickets have been provided for George Fox half-time and full-time employees. Tickets are limited to two per employee on a first-come, first-served basis starting Monday, Feb. 3, in the Event Services office. Reservations may be taken on Monday for Portland Center employees only.

On Thursday, Feb. 6, the remaining tickets (limited to two per person) will be available to those who sign up on the waitlist. If you find you are not able to attend, please return your tickets for another employee’s use.

Sign up for web editor training session Feb. 5

A training session for Cascade Server, the system used to edit the university website, will be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m.

This basic-level session is tailored for editors who have either not edited the website before or need a refresher on using the software. The session will be held in the library basement computer lab (MLRC 020). Sign up here.

Compete in food and clothing drives to win donuts

Enter the Bruin Community Pantry food drive and the clothing drive for the Closet Project and win Mac Daddy Donuts for your group! The competition is open to all student clubs, residence areas, and offices on campus.

Here are the details …

  • The drives will begin on Friday, Feb. 7, and end at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24.
  • The food will be weighed and added to your group’s totals, and the group with the most pounds of food by Feb. 24 will win. All food items must be unopened, unused and nonperishable. Please check out this list of items to donate.
  • The group with the most clothing donated by Feb. 24 will win the clothing contest. Clothing will be counted per item and added to your group’s totals.
  • All clothing items must be clean. Accessories such as purses, belts and scarves are acceptable, as well as gently-used clothing of all styles.  Professional clothing is especially needed.
  • The drop-off location for your food donations will be at the pantry in Roberts 110 on Mondays and Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. The-drop off location for clothing will be the Bruin Store.

Get henna on the quad today

The university’s nursing service trip to Africa is hosting a henna fundraiser on the quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today (Friday).

We will have an assortment of options to choose from, including Super Bowl team logos. If you’d like to get some henna and help us raise money for our trip, come and find us!

The funds collected will support a trip to Kenya to provide medical care to people in the Lugulu Mission Hospital and surrounding rural communities. Any and all donations are appreciated. We will be accepting cash and Venmo as payment.

The Closet Project needs specific items

The Bruin Store launched The Closet Project last Friday. While we were expecting under 100 students to come shop during our three-hour event, we served over 275 students and sold over 380 articles of clothing!

The excitement and interest of the students was wonderful, and has now resulted in specific sizing and alteration requests. Do you have any of the below items that you would be willing to donate?

  • Women’s black dress pants in sizes four to eight
  • Men’s jackets, dress shirts or polos in sizes 2XL – 4XL in all colors
  • Men’s dress shoes in sizes eight to eleven
  • Women’s blazers in sizes small, medium, or extra-large
  • Women’s dresses in sizes extra-small to medium
  • Women’s nice shirts and blouses in sizes extra-small to large
  • Dark denim (in good condition) in any size
  • The ability to sew a button for a student with an interview coming up

Avoid parking in Stevens and Hoover lots today

The undergraduate admissions office is thrilled to welcome over 200 students and their families to our annual Scholarship Competition today (Friday).

Each of you, as you interact with families and students, play an incredible role in helping to determine whether they choose George Fox. Thank you for the part you play in ensuring our families and students feel welcomed and cared for by our community.

In the spirit of hospitality, if you could please avoid parking in the Hoover and Stevens parking lots to ensure close parking for our guests, that would be great.

Plan to attend alumni choir concert Feb. 9

Join the George Fox community at a free alumni choir concert on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Derric Johnson, a former longtime choral director at the university,  will return with 55 alumni choir members.

George Fox’s current concert choir will perform a set of pieces on their own, and both choirs will perform a few pieces together.

Join El Cap Climbing Challenge

Are you ready to take on the iconic 3,000-foot granite monolith of El Capitan? The Hadlock Student Center climbing wall is hosting an El Cap Challenge from Feb. 2 to 28 in which climbers log 3,000 vertical feet, symbolic of surmounting the famous route in Yosemite.

Stop by the climbing wall for more information and to pick up a log to track your vertical feet through the month. The categories include first to reach 3,000 feet, hardest average grade, and fastest ascent.

The Graduate School of Physical Therapy is excited to present its sixth annual research symposium on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101 and 102.

Physical therapy doctoral faculty and third-year students will showcase various rehabilitation research topics. David Cimbora, PhD, dean of the College of Behavioral and Health Sciences, will present the keynote address. Light refreshments will be served.

Watch Harry Potter movie tonight in FoxHole
