John Foubert, a professor of higher education and student affairs administration at Oklahoma State University, will be on campus Thursday, March 8, and Friday, March 9, speaking to students and employees on these important topics. Foubert has written several books and articles on these topics and is a much-sought-after speaker and consultant to colleges across the nation and the military. He makes frequent appearances on CNN and NPR, and is cited regularly in news outlets like the Huffington Post, The New York Times, and U.S. News & World Report. He has testified before Congress and briefed the White House and the Pentagon about how to end sexual violence.

The university’s Department of Biology invites you to a special guest lecture presented by Dr. Carlos Martinez del Rio, professor of zoology and physiology at the University of Wyoming, on Thursday, March 8, at 5 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Martinez del Rio has published more than 150 papers on physiological ecology and natural history and has received wide recognition for his substantial contributions to stable isotope ecology. He has explored how birds disperse mistletoe seeds, why hummingbirds can digest table sugar but robins cannot, and why variable temperatures make hawkmoths uncertain pollinators.

Most recently, he’s studied stable isotopes to find out how much white-winged doves depend on saguaros and why there are so few marine songbirds. The title of his presentation is “From isotopes to adaptive radiations: A cyborg’s perspective.”

Hey everyone! The Coast to Coast Swing Dance Club invites you to join us this Saturday, March 3, in the FoxHole! Bring your friends and bring your dancing shoes. All levels of dancers are welcome! We hope to see you there!

The university community is invited to two free concerts to be held in Bauman Auditorium on Thursday, March 1, and Monday, March 5.

Tonight, a Winter Symphony Orchestra Concert, featuring the university’s Chamber Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, will perform at 7:30 p.m. The former will perform Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins, and the latter will perform Johann Strauss II’s Mein Herr Marquis from the opera Die Fledermaus and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major. Featured will be soprano Julia Wendt, winner of the 2018 George Fox Concerto-Aria Competition.

On Monday, a Winter Symphonic Band Concert will play at 7:30 p.m., featuring the Symphonic Band playing a number of selections, including Berstein’s Slava, Schumann’s When Jesus Wept, and Sousa’s Jack Tarr.

Through the Center for Peace Justice, Nehemiah Heye is hosting a colloquium series on pornography and its effects on human trafficking, the church and on the brain.

You could be the cure! Help cancer patients with a simple mouth swab. Sign up for the “Be the Match” bone marrow registry on Monday or Tuesday, March 5-6, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103.

Young patients battling cancer will also be on hand to remind us of how you can change someone’s life by simply signing up.

On March 1, a new parental leave policy will go into effect for eligible George Fox University employees. The new parental leave policy provides paid leave for both the primary and secondary caregiver for a newborn or newly placed adopted child.

Here is a brief overview:

Primary Caregiver

• Eight weeks 100 percent paid leave
• Four-week phase back (upon return)

Secondary Caregiver

• Two weeks 100 percent paid
• Two-week phase back (upon return)

The policy and procedure for requesting paid leave will be published to our Employee Handbook on March 1, 2018.

George Fox  will serve as the venue for a special musical theatre presentation, Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance, presented by guest Core Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. The show is free and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Celebrating the music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance era in New York City, Of Ebony Embers examines the lives of three outstanding but very different African American poets – Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay – as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas.

Chamber music theatre is a unique performance format created by the Core Ensemble, featuring a marriage of theatrical narrative to chamber music performance. Dracyn Blount portrays multiple characters while interacting with Mikael Darmanie on piano. The script was written by Akin Babatunde, who also serves as the show’s director.

The production is being hosted by George Fox’s music and theatre departments, in partnership with the offices of diversity and intercultural life.

Calling all singers, bands, spoken word artists, and podcasters: The Student Mixtape Project is back, and we are passionate about giving George Fox students a chance to “Be Heard.”

Being a part of the mixtape only takes two simple steps:

1. Fill out this survey so we can learn about who you are.
2. If you would like a free hour of studio recording time, after the survey, we will send you an Excel sheet to sign up for your session. If your audio track is already mixed, please send it directly to Paige Patterson at ppatteson13@georgefox.edu.

Who are we?
The George Fox Student Mixtape Project is a collaborative student project that started back in the early 2000s. It was revamped last year through KFOX Radio to produce 400 student mixtapes that were given away on Dead Day. With the help of ASC, we plan to produce 800 free mixtapes for the student body featuring selected works and release the entirety of all submissions online.

The women’s basketball team is in the NCAA Division III National Tournament! The Bruins travel to Iowa to play Saint Benedict in the first round, but you can still catch the action right here on campus. The game will be streamed in Canyon Commons 101 beginning at 3:30 p.m. this Friday, March 2. Snacks will be provided!
