About Our People

August 6th, 2018

Jekabs Bikis (College of Business) presented a poster, “Perceived value of ACBSP accreditation among George Fox University graduate business students,” at the annual meeting of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs (ACBSP) in Kansas City, Missouri, June 8-10. Jekabs’ poster was awarded the “Best Poster in Conference.”

Paul Otto (History) and undergraduate student Paul Schroeder play-tested their game, “The Origins of Apartheid and the Birth of African Resistance, 1935-1936,” at the annual Reacting to the Past Game Development Conference at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, on July 12. Paul Otto also work-shopped another game, “Debating the Great Trek, 1835-1837,” at the same conference.

Nicole M. Enzinger (Education) published an article, “Grade 5 Children’s Drawings for Integer Addition and Subtraction Open Number Sentences,” in The Journal of Mathematical Behavior. The classifications of the drawings produced by children challenge traditional models for teaching integer addition and subtraction in school mathematics. She also recently returned from UmeÃ¥, Sweden, where she presented a paper, “Prospective Teachers’ Explanations for Integer Word Problems,” at the Psychology of Mathematics Education Conference.

Brandon Waybright (Art and Design) took part in an exhibit, titled “Reading Wall,” at the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Springs, California, in March and April and also exhibited a table of his original publications at the Otis Art Book Fair, an international juried event held at Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles on July 21-22. He was also an exhibitor at this year’s Crafty Wonderland, a juried event held at the Portland Convention Center in May. Looking ahead, he will present a paper, “History from the Ground Up: The Zine as Model for a More Inclusive Design History,” at SECAC’s (formerly the Southeastern College Art Conference) meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, Oct. 17-20. SECAC is a national college art organization with a yearly peer-review and juried conference. He will also publish an abstract, “The Future is not Flat: Developing Pedagogical Tools that Prepare Design Students for a Multi-Sensory and Multi-Dimensional World,” at Decipher, the American Institute of Graphic Arts’ educator’s conference in Detroit Sept. 27-29. AIGA is the largest national organization for graphic design professionals.

Paul Anderson (Christian studies) presented a plenary session TED Talk, “The Spirituality of Jesus,” at Experiencing Life with God: An Academic Conference Celebrating the Pioneering Contributions of Richard Foster and Dallas Willard, at Westmont College in May. He also presented a workshop, “The Spirituality of Jesus,” at the Richard Foster conference he organized, “Celebrating 40 Years of The Celebration of Discipline – Empowering Spiritual Transformation in the Local Church,” on the George Fox campus in June. He also presented “The John, Jesus, and History Project and a Fourth Quest for Jesus” at the Society of New Testament Studies meetings in Athens, Greece, in August. In addition, he participated in an advanced seminar on “Economic Systems in Christian Perspectives,” sponsored by the Oikonomia Network, at Biola University in May. Finally, the book he coedited, The Literary Devices in John’s Gospel; Revised and Expanded Edition, by David Wead, was published as Volume #7 in the Johannine Monograph Series (which Paul co-edits) with Wipf & Stock.

Updated Fitness Center Information

August 5th, 2018

We trust you are excited about the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27 (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice most of the space has been cleared in anticipation of remodeling it for athletics’ use since the HSC will be opening soon. Due to this upcoming remodeling of the Wheeler fitness center space, some equipment has been moved into the adjacent dance studio space (Wheeler 211) for general student and employee use until the HSC opens. The squat racks are also still available for use and are in their original spot.

There are more limited hours for this interim space in Wheeler, as it will now be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period and trust that the new space in the HSC will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Rob Simpson (simpsonr@georgefox.edu) regarding the HSC or Adam Puckett (apuckett@georgefox.edu) regarding the Wheeler Sports Center space.

Updated Vehicle Registration Information

August 5th, 2018

We apologize for any frustration in accessing your vehicle registration information, as the database unfortunately is not granting you access to your previous registration information.

If you’ve had car changes since you first registered within the past three to four years when we switched to the new hangtags (or can’t remember which vehicles are registered), just email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu with the changes and she can update it for you.

If you work at the Newberg campus and have yet to register any vehicles, you can access the vehicle registration link underneath “GFU Resources” on the home page of MyGFU. Have your DMV registration slip in front of you, as you will need to input information from that slip.

Every employee is given one gratis parking permit that can be switched between your vehicles. If you wish to purchase additional tags for each vehicle you drive to campus, they are only $5 cash each at the Campus Public Safety office.

Bruin Den is closed this week

August 5th, 2018

The Bruin Den will be closed this week (Aug. 6-10) in preparation for the upcoming school year. We will reopen Monday, Aug. 13, with summer hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) until classes start on Monday, Aug. 27, when we start school year hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Encourage sophomores, juniors and seniors to register their vehicles

August 5th, 2018

Know any sophomores, juniors and/or seniors? If so, please encourage them to register their vehicles for residential or commuter parking permits! Permits will take one to three weeks to arrive, so now is the time to register.

Contact Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu) with any questions.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors: Register your vehicles now

August 3rd, 2018

Sophomores, juniors and seniors: Please don’t delay in registering your vehicles for residential or commuter parking permits! Please use your campus address and PO box number as your “mailing address,” as your permit will take one to three weeks to arrive and you will need it on your car before school begins.

Your permit will not be in your PO box; you will need to sign for it at Mail Services. The residential permits are limited and are going fast, so register today before they are gone!

You’ll also want to keep the parking brochure (that comes with your parking permit) in your car so you will know where to park when you arrive on campus, as there have been changes since last spring.

Contact Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu) with any questions.

Now is the time to order your textbooks

August 3rd, 2018

Fall classes are three weeks away, so now is the time to get your textbooks! Go to georgefoxshop.com to rent or purchase your books. Select in-store pick up, get free shipping and simply pick up your books between Welcome Weekend and the end of the first week of class.

Look for more information about in-store pick up closer to Welcome Weekend.

Questions? Contact Michael Simmons at msimmons@georgefox.edu.

Please review your vehicle info on MyGFU

August 2nd, 2018

Before undergraduate students start to arrive in a mere seven days, now would be a great time to log on to MyGFU and check your vehicle registration.

  • If you have a new car that isn’t listed, please email Nadine Kincaid with all of the new vehicle’s pertinent information and which vehicle it replaces.
  • Can’t find your parking permit or need to purchase an additional one for another car? Bring $5 cash to the Campus Public Safety office and we will issue one on the spot.
  • Have yet to register anything? Please go on MyGFU and click on the vehicle registration link under “Staff Resources” and have your DMV registration slip handy to fill in the required information. Please put your campus PO box number in the “mailing address” line, as all permits will be sent via campus mail.
  • Don’t work at the Newberg campus but go there frequently for meetings? Please go ahead and register as well.
  • A gentle reminder: Your staff parking permit is for your use only and not for your child’s use. They must purchase their own parking permit and must park where their permit allows (not the staff lots).
  • If you work solely at the Portland Center and only come infrequently to the Newberg campus, just check in at the Campus Public Safety office for a temporary permit when in Newberg.

Questions? An out-of-the-box vehicle situation? Please contact Nadine at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.

Thanks!

University launches Bruin Community Pantry this fall

August 2nd, 2018

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the start of Bruin Community Pantry, an initiative seeking to address the real problem of hunger (“food insecurity”) on campus. It’s our goal to help meet the needs of community members who, for one reason or another, do not have access to enough healthy food.

Four different components of Bruin Community Pantry include:

Food Pantry
All George Fox community members have access to the pantry, located in the Roberts Center (Room 110). Community food drives will be held to provide non-perishable items for the pantry, and athletic teams will facilitate food drives during home games.

Contact student life for a list of items non-perishable food and household items needed for the pantry. Donations are now being accepted in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center.

Hospitality
Partnerships with local businesses for “gifts in kind” have been established with Bon Appetit, Newberg’s Grocery Outlet and Ray’s Produce. A variety of pre-packaged foods are available for students, located at hospitality tables in the student life office, spiritual life office, and the Intercultural Resource Center (Moore House). The tables are open during office hours, which are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Duke Athletic Center will host a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar that is available to all George Fox students.

Leftovers
The student life office will arrange for quality leftover food to be stored in a refrigerator in our office. All food donated will be adequately contained and dated. Food not picked up in the appropriate amount of time will be disposed of.

Students participating in this program can sign up by contacting our office. A waiver is required for anyone participating in the Leftovers program.

Outreach
Partnering with existing local outreach initiatives facilitated by spiritual life, students who want to support their efforts will be connected to their programs.

We live in a society with easy access to processed food. When you eat whole foods, you’re getting food in its natural state. This aspect of our outreach will endeavor to provide cooking classes in various living areas on campus using recipes from “Eat well on $4 a day, Good and Cheap.”

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon in the student life office (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2312).
