The Graduate School of Counseling has hired an alumna and former adjunct instructor, Unique Page, to serve as director of the Individual & Family Matters Counseling Clinic and to teach courses. A Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, Unique has worked for the past year as an assistant professor in Multnomah University’s Graduate School of Counseling while also working, since 2016, as a therapist at a private practice, UP Counseling in Tigard. She has also taught at George Fox on an adjunct basis for the past three years. Her previous experience includes working as a resident therapist at the Saint Child maternity home in Beaverton (2015-17) and as a mental health clinician with Community Services Northwest in Vancouver, Washington (2014-16). Unique is currently enrolled in Oregon State University’s PhD in counseling program, and she holds a master of arts in marriage, couple and family counseling from George Fox (2014) and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Loyola Marymount University (2009). She lives in Tualatin with husband, Rev. Sean Page, and attends Grace Chapel in Wilsonville.


After a two-year hiatus, John Kaye has returned to the university to work as a student accounts specialist. He worked previously for George Fox as a financial aid and communication specialist in 2015-16. Since 2016 he has been enrolled in the Oregon Institute of Technology’s bachelor’s degree program in software engineering technology, which he plans to complete in June of 2020. Previously, John worked as a technical support advisor for Xerox in Tigard (2013-14) and as a teacher with Evangelical Friends Mission in Kigali, Rwanda (2009-10). He lives in Newberg with his wife Johanna, director of financial aid at George Fox. They are expecting twins in March.


The university welcomes Julia James to serve as coordinator of the Academic Resource Center. She has worked the past year as an instructor and tutor at George Fox. She taught Writing Portfolio Development last spring, and over the 2017-18 academic year she taught Knowing and Being Known and Writing Studio. Previously, Julia taught primarily history courses for Syracuse University between 2012 and 2016. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history education and music education from Pensacola Christian College (2008), a master’s degree in history from Central Washington University (2011), and a master of philosophy degree from Syracuse University (2013). She is currently a PhD candidate at Syracuse. Julia lives in Vancouver, Washington, with her husband, Kris, and is part of a congregation of believers called The Gathering Place.


Marina Alcala-Medel has joined the advancement office as a gifts and data entry specialist. She has worked in the position as a temp since August of 2017 and was recently hired to work part time. Prior to her arrival at George Fox, she was an engineering intern with Engineering Ministries International, working in the Nicaragua office, and with the Hoffman Construction Company in 2016-17, getting to be a part of the Nike WHQ expansion project. Marina earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a civil engineering concentration, from George Fox in 2016. During her time at the university, she worked in various work-study positions, including as a research and data assistant in the Office of Advancement for two years, as a Spanish Chapel coordinator, as a Spanish department assistant, and as an activities assistant coordinator at Friendsview Retirement Community. She lives in Aloha and attends Iglesia de Cristo Agape and Christian Church of Hillsboro, where she functions as the youth ministry leader.


Jennifer Salzman joins George Fox as director of exhibitions and the university’s art collection. For the past 11 years she has served as director of the Lane Community College Art Gallery, where she managed 16 exhibitions each year and hosted artists from around the country. Concurrently, she has worked as an adjunct faculty member for LCC’s art department since 2005, teaching courses in basic design, drawing, photography and photo journalism, among others. Jennifer also taught art on an adjunct basis at Linn-Benton Community College in 2015-16, and from 2006 to 2010 she helped develop and work with the Integrated Arts program that brought together art and academic courses at various high schools in Eugene and the greater Lane County area. She earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1999 and holds a bachelor’s degree in art education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1995). She lives in Creswell, Oregon, with her husband, Andreas Salzman, a tenured professor at Lane Community College. Together, they have three daughters: Madeline Mary Salzman (26), Olivia Nicole Coon (24), married to Josh Coon, and Amelia Rebecca Salzman (22). Jennifer and her husband attend St Mary’s Catholic Church in Eugene as well as annually at the Church of Saint Peter in York, England.


Terri Crawford (Financial Aid) has retired from the university after 25 years of service to George Fox.

After working in a temporary capacity, Katie Moon has transitioned to full time as an enrollment counselor for the Adult Degree Program. She has worked for the university since May of this year.

Mark McMinn (PsyD) received news that his 2017 book, The Science of Virtue, will be receiving the 2018 Book Award from the Martin Institute and Dallas Willard Center at Westmont College. Mark will travel to Westmont in January to receive the award and give a chapel talk and provost lecture.

Ed Higgins (English Faculty Emeritus) published a poem, “Blue Heron,” in the Summer 2018 issue of Terrene, on online literary magazine dedicated to “an earth worth writing for.”

Karen Buchanan (EdD) and Tom Buchanan (MAT) presented their paper, “Illuminating Family-Community Knowledge in Teacher Education,” at the 2018 British Educational Research Association (BERA) Conference in Newcastle, England, on Sept. 11.

Alex Rolfe (Library) was honored by bepress, the university’s Digital Commons platform company, as an IR (Institutional Repository) “all-star” for 2018. Alex, a technical services and scholarly communications librarian, has been key in integrating the repository Digital Commons@George Fox University into the campus mission to help students Be Known academically and professionally, and to promote George Fox’s scholarship.

Come hear ambassador Harriet Isom’s presentation Oct. 8

All are to view selections from the Harriet Isom Collection: “Vignettes of the Dani and Tuareg Peoples.” This exhibition will feature selections of photographs, art objects and cultural artifacts representing the Dani people group of New Guinea and the Tuareg people of Niger.

Ambassador Isom will give a public lecture on the exhibit and her time with these people groups on Monday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center ballroom. A reception to open the exhibit follows at 7 p.m. in the Hoover lobby.

Isom was a career foreign service officer from 1961 to 1996, assigned to embassies in Asia and Africa. During her last decade in the Foreign Service, she served as U.S. Ambassador to Laos, Benin and Cameroon.

All invited to Fall Faculty Lecture and Richter Student Scholars Symposium Oct. 16

All are invited to the Fall 2018 Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Our featured speaker will be Professor of Music Brent Weaver, recipient of the 2017-18 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship.

Brent will examine the underlying cognitive structures that our brains perceive, which contribute to our emotional and spiritual enjoyment of music. He will show how a composer can play with those structures to move listeners, using examples from many styles of music.

Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter student scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. George Fox students will present their research projects in a conversational poster format.

Both events are sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee. Refreshments will be served.

Interested in being a tutor for a local high school student?

Catalyst Alternative High School (CAHS) in Newberg is looking for math, science and history tutors who are available during fall and/or spring semester.

Your objective would be to help them gain a better understanding of the material presented in these classes: general algebra, science and history. These students would benefit from additional encouragement and guidance from you.

Tutors would meet with students for about one to two hours a week between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Catalyst building. CAHS is one and a half miles from George Fox, and we could coordinate transportation if needed.

Interested in mentoring a high school student?

Catalyst Alternative High School (CAHS) in Newberg is looking for eager mentors for students. Students come to Catalyst for a variety of reasons, including anxiety, depression and social pressures. Many of these students long to have a one-on-one relationship with someone they can trust and look up to. We are looking for mentors who can commit to fall and/or spring semester.

CAHS is looking for people who are:

  • Committed to building relationships with students
  • Willing to be proactive and initiative
  • Passionate about working with youth
  • Attentive listeners
  • Encouraging and supportive
  • Positive role models

As a mentor, you could be a consistent figure who guides them through obstacles in their school, home, social and academic life. Mentors would meet with students for about one hour a week between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Catalyst building, located a mile and a half from George Fox. There is transportation available if needed.

Make plans to celebrate unveiling of Alumni Plaza this Saturday

Have you walked by the area between the Ross Center and Stoffer Family Stadium and wondered what was going on? If so, we have exciting news: The space will be home to a new Alumni Plaza featuring a 10-foot-tall bronze bear! The plaza will serve as a visual reminder of our pride in being Bruins and celebrate the legacy of George Fox.

On the Saturday of homecoming weekend, Oct. 6, we will host a special Alumni Plaza unveiling ceremony from 11:30 to noon. Free bear claws and coffee will be served, and a tailgate time follows in the Bauman parking lot. We hope you can join us!

The women of the George Fox community (staff, faculty and administrators, as well as female spouses) are invited to the Fall Ladies’ Luncheon tomorrow (Tuesday). Ruth Baker will be hosting this come-and-go event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101-102.

Join photography club meeting this afternoon

Are you interested in taking better photos, visiting beautiful locations in Oregon, and creating a photography portfolio? Look no further than Photography Club! We are open to beginners who have never used a camera as well as more intermediate photographers looking to get more out of their cameras.

We will be meeting from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Roberts Center’s Room 168 today (Monday). Snacks and drinks will be provided.

While we provide cameras at meetings, we highly encourage you to bring your own camera as well even if it’s just your phone.

If you are interested in studying abroad at a Veritas study abroad location, come by the study abroad office in the Intercultural Resource Center at 5:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Oct. 3, for a chance to connect with our representative, get information and ask questions. Concerned about a student? Submit a ‘Fox360’ alert

If you have concerns about a student, log into Fox360 to submit an “alert” for the student. Submit alerts for concerns in the following areas:

  • Academic – Missing multiple classes; consistently poor academic performance
  • Behavioral – Concerning or disruptive behaviors in or outside of class
  • Emotional – Mental health concerns; unusual emotional expression
  • Physical – Medical concerns; extreme changes in grooming, personal care
  • Social – Personal, social, or family concerns that are affecting well-being and performance

This Fox360 Quick Guide provides a visual overview of the Fox360 system; more details about using Fox360 are available in this Google Doc.

The Student Support Network will assign a “case manager” to follow up with students. Case managers will do their best to give updates to faculty members who submit alerts or provide feedback.
