Tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m., join Team Emery and George Fox athletics for an inaugural bear toss! The toss will take place at halftime of the woman’s basketball game against Lewis & Clark. All bears will be given to sick children in hospitals as well as to the Newberg police and fire departments.

Many of the kids in the hospital have nothing. What might be just a bear to you represents hope, encouragement and bravery to them. Pick up a new bear, throw it at the game, and help remind these sick patients that negative experiences don’t have to define you! See you at halftime!

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (the weeks of Feb. 11 through March 22). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our spring leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

The university community is invited to a special lecture, “The Defining Debate in Political Economy: Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy,” at 6:30 p.m. this Monday, Jan. 28, in Hoover 105.

Presenting will be Peter Boettke, a professor of economics and philosophy at George Mason University and director of the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center. His topic will touch on the intersection of economics, business, policy and human flourishing.

The event is the latest installment of the annual Reiten Executive in Residence lecture series, hosted by the university’s College of Business.

Boettke has thought deeply and written about the issues of economic freedom and organization in society, as well as the moral and philosophical underpinnings of various political economic systems. He is an economist of the Austrian School and an author on a new book on F.A. Hayek: Economics, Political Economy and Social Philosophy.

Boettke received his PhD in economics from George Mason University in 1989 and has also taught at New York University, Stanford University, and the London School of Economics.

The university community is invited to Bauman Auditorium for “An Evening of Jazz” featuring saxophonist and flutist Erica von Kleist at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Von Kleist will play with the university’s Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Jazz Quartet. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and established herself early on in her career on the New York jazz scene.

She has performed, toured and made Grammy-Nominated recordings with various artists, including the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Chris Potter, Sean Jones, Seth MacFarlane, and Rufus Reid.

In addition to the concert, von Kleist is doing a masterclass on Friday, Jan. 25, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Ross 208. School-age students who come (middle schoolers and high schoolers) can get a voucher for a free ticket to the concert.

Volleyball’s rise in popularity over the past 30 years has created a growing need to better understand the biomechanical causes for shoulder injuries, particularly in youth volleyball players.

The biomedical engineering program is inviting a candidate to speak to how their research lab uses motion capture to analyze the mechanics of hitting a volleyball with the goal of creating better best-practices guidelines for strength and conditioning and repetition counts.

Join us from 3 to 4 p.m. today (Thursday) in EHS 102 to hear about several ongoing experiments in the lab, including using impulse and momentum techniques to estimate the forces on the body during a hit and ways to compare variation in types of motions. The presentation will highlight connections between the undergraduate engineering curriculum and the research techniques.

Artists Andreas and Jennifer Salzman will be giving a lecture on their exhibition on Monday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Chehalem Cultural Center ballroom. A reception will follow at 7 p.m. in the Hoover lobby.

The Salzmans have been married for 28 years. They have been practicing artists for the past 28 years as well. Although they work in very different mediums, their work often addresses similar narratives. Both bodies of work discuss matters of relationships and the way those relationships define their lives. All relationships are approached visually with similar connections. Andreas and Jennifer both find themselves working with dialogue about their children, as well as those of their aging parents and loss of loved ones. This exhibition, The Journey, explores these narratives through mixed media sculpture and both traditional and nontraditional photography.

This semester the spiritual life office is starting up a friendship/mentorship program, “Generation Connection”! Our goal is to join George Fox students and elderly folks from neighboring churches and retirement homes in an intentional community.

Participants will be paired up and commit to hour-long weekly one-on-one meetings between February and April. These meetings will provide a space to bridge the generation gap while engaging in conversation or pursuing common interests.
