Preparation has already begun on EHS, so EHS is currently closed. Any desired access into a construction zone must be prearranged through Plant Services, as an escort is required.

Update your vehicle registration now

May 15th, 2019

Now that the dust has settled from the spring semester, it is a great time to update your vehicle registrations!

Please make note of this car registration information …

  • If you are still using an all-white staff permit, or an orange adjunct permit, it has been void for four years.
  • If you have yet to initially register your vehicle, please do so at your earliest convenience on MyGFU. Be sure to have your DMV vehicle registration slip in front of you, as the database will ask for some information that is on there.
  • If you are currently registered but have a change, addition or deletion of a vehicle, please bring the DMV registration slip to the Campus Public Safety office or email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu if you aren’t in Newberg so we can update your vehicle information.
  • Tired of switching your gratis permit from car to car? It’s only $5 cash to purchase a permit for your second car! Bring your money to the CPS office and we can issue you a new permit dedicated to your second vehicle.
  • Did you purchase a new car but don’t have the new plates yet? No problem! We can register it using the temporary permit on the back window, then update it later when you email your new plate numbers to Nadine.
  • If you work at the Portland Center but make frequent visits to the Newberg campus, we need you to register your vehicle as well and to park in the staff lots.
  • Please don’t wait until school starts to do these updates, as the line often stretches out the Campus Public Safety office door!

Questions? Have an out-of-the-box situation? Call Nadine at 503-554-2090 during office hours.

May 13th, 2019

The university community is invited to a biology candidate research lecture presented by Dr. Elizabeth DuPriest from 11 a.m. to noon today (Tuesday) in Hoover 102.

Fetal and early childhood environmental influences can “program” a baby’s health and risk of disease that they experience later in life. Using nutritional and transgenic models, Dr. DuPriest will explain how maternal influences shape early growth and the structure and function of the offspring’s kidneys, liver, and adipose tissue.

The title of Dr. DuPriest’s lecture is “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease: Thank Your Mother for Your Good Health!”

In his six years at Mount Saint Mary College, Michael posted a 91-69 overall record, including a 69-27 mark against Skyline Conference rivals. For his accomplishments, he was named the Skyline Conference’s Coach of the Year in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Previously, Michael served as the assistant coach on the school’s men’s basketball team for one season (2013-14) and, since 2014, has also led the college’s men’s golf program. Before his arrival at Mount Saint Mary, Coppolino was an assistant coach with Alfred University’s men’s basketball program (2011-12), and, from 2000 to 2011, he was a clubhouse attendant with the Boston Red Sox, where he won two World Series rings in 2004 and 2007. A 2007 graduate of Eckerd College with a degree in business management, Michael completed a master’s degree in business administration at Alfred University in 2012. He and his wife, Jessica, plan to move to Newberg in the coming months.

The undergraduate admissions office welcomes Lauren Hill as an admissions counselor this month. About Our People

May 13th, 2019

Four faculty members were honored with faculty achievement awards for the 2018-19 academic year: Sarita Gallagher (Christian Studies) and Rhett Luedtke (Theatre) were named the undergraduate teacher and researcher of the year, respectively, while Daniel Kang (Physical Therapy) and Leah Payne (Seminary) received the corresponding awards at the graduate level.

Roger Nam (Seminary) published a chapter, “‘Half Speak Ashdodite and None Can Speak Judean’: Code-Switching in Ezra-Nehemiah as an Identity Marker for Repatriate Judeans and Koreans,” in Landscapes of Korean and Korean American Biblical Interpretation (SBL Press, 2019).

Brian Doak (Christian Studies) is publishing two books this summer, a monograph and a major coedited volume, both with Oxford University Press. Heroic Bodies in Ancient Israel examines the heroic world of ancient Israel within the Hebrew Bible, and shows that ancient Israelite literature operated within and against a world of heroic ideals in its ancient context. Not merely a textual study of the Hebrew Bible in isolation, the book also considers iconography and compares Israelite literature with other ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern materials, illustrating Israel’s place among a wider construction of heroic bodies. In The Oxford Handbook of the Phoenician and Punic Mediterranean, edited with Carolina Lopez-Ruiz, a wide range of scholars write summary studies on key historical moments, areas of culture, regional studies and areas of contact, and the reception of the Phoenicians as an idea, entangled with the formation of other cultural identities, both ancient and modern.

PT research team seeks volunteers for bunions study

May 12th, 2019

Do you have experience with bunions? Then we need you!

George Fox University’s School of Physical Therapy is conducting research on bunions. Our research team is interested in looking at two groups of people: 1) persons who had surgery for their bunions, and 2) those who currently have bunions.

We would like to know how the foot functions following bunion surgery. In order to answer this question, we are collecting data on how people walk and on muscle strength.

Testing is conducted in the physical therapy department. The tests are simple to perform and require about an hour to complete. The results of our study will help to provide direction as to the best form of rehabilitation after surgery or in lieu of surgery.

If you are interested in our study, would like more information or would like to enroll as a participant, please contact Jaymee at 808-728-8353 or email jkau17@georgefox.edu. Jaymee will be happy to answer all your questions. There is a monetary incentive for participation in this study.
