Comings and Goings

October 5th, 2020

The university welcomes Gabriela Elkins as a graduate admissions counselor this month. She will work with prospective students interested in George Fox’s counseling programs. She arrives from Corban University in Salem, where she has worked as a graduate admissions counselor for the school’s MBA, master of business intelligence and analytics (MBIA), and master of public safety administration (MPSA) programs since February of 2019. Gabriela’s graduate counselor experience at Corban came after she spent two and a half years (2016-18) as an admissions intern at the university. A graduate of Corban, from which she earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 2018, Gabriela lives in Portland with her best friend and former classmate, Missy. Since Gabriela recently moved to the area, she is still searching for a church home, but has attended a few virtual services at Bridgetown.

The IT department welcomes Roland Parenteau as a data analyst. For the past three years he has worked as a data analyst for the Oregon Department of Education in Salem, analyzing and presenting data related to career and education programs overseen by the department. From 2014 to 2016, he was an adjunct instructor teaching programming at Pioneer Pacific College in Wilsonville. Roland also gained experience in the field as a contractor for the Mainz Brady Group of Portland, providing IT support to Providence Health Services (2013-14). He holds a master’s degree in journalism, with an emphasis in science communication, from Boston University, and a bachelor’s degree in American history from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Roland lives in Newberg with his wife Jennifer. They have three grown children – one of whom, Jocelyn, is a George Fox alumna. He enjoys exercise, learning classical guitar, and FaceTiming with his four grandkids.

Sarah Tenney joins the university’s advancement office as the director of development, government, corporate and foundation relations. As a seasoned collaborator, Sarah will help align the university’s new enterprise areas and the advancement office’s institutional solicitations, working closely with faculty, finance, HR and advancement to prepare proposals for key strategic improvement needs, update procedures, verify grant criteria, identify funder priorities, grow faculty grant writers, deliver funder reports, and assist as grant projects change. She has nearly 30 years of industry experience, which has included four executive positions with Kaiser Permanente of Hawaii, Goodwill Industries, USS Battleship Missouri, and Blue Export Group. Her university tenures include AAFOA consortium membership, developing Chaminade University’s nonprofit MBA program, as well as adjunct faculty roles and multiple federal grant contract responsibilities for the University of Hawaii system. Sarah earned a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies (Japan/China), is a graduate of the Pacific Asian Management Institute (PAMI) in international entrepreneurship, and holds an executive MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She lives in Hillsboro and attends Beaverton Foursquare Church and East Hill Family Church in Gresham. She also participates in the Portland ComedySportz Recreation League and is an amateur floral painter, with her first collection set to be showcased in McMinnville.

The financial aid office welcomes Soren Sweet as an assistant director of its scholarship resource center. An alumna of the university, from which she earned both a bachelor’s degree in English (2017) and a master of arts in teaching (2018), she has worked the past year as the finance manager at the Salish Seaside Escapes in Orcas Island, Washington, specializing in filing tax documents, tracking incoming and outgoing funds, and managing bills, payments and financial accounts. She worked previously as a stylist for a bridal shop in Portland (2019). Soren lives in Newberg with her husband, Daniel Briggs, a George Fox alumnus, and their dog and cat. As they just moved back to the area, they are in search of a church home.

Amy Yates joins the university as a customer support specialist for IT. She has extensive customer service experience in the restaurant industry and has been a fitness instructor at the McMinnville Aquatic Center for 18 years. Amy’s passion for fitness inspired her to work as a staff support manager for the Spartan Race the past three years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Oregon University in 2002. She lives in McMinnville with her husband, Jeff, a 911 dispatcher and volunteer reserve police officer, and her teenage daughter, Keala. They attend Calvary Chapel in McMinnville.

About Our People

October 5th, 2020

Chris Sharp and Youngbok (Abraham) Kang have been named Engineering Unleashed Fellows for 2020 after participating in workshops hosted by the Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development Program. They were among only 29 faculty members from 24 institutions of higher education across the U.S. to earn the honor, which recognizes their contributions to engineering education, and specifically, entrepreneurial engineering. The program emphasizes integrating an entrepreneurial mindset into practices that benefit students, their institutions and greater society. The workshop’s peer coaches nominated Chris and Abraham, and the subsequent application was recognized by an independent review committee from Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) partner institutions.

Lorretta Krautscheid and Pam Fifer (Nursing) presented “Untethered Teaching and Lecture Capture: Theory and Technology Integration Facilitating Active Learning” at the National League for Nursing Education Summit (Virtual). The presentation focused on education affordances that are created through the integration of cognitive load theory with multimedia instruction principles and described how to leverage resources and implement Untethered Lecture Capture in a department or college. Current research findings, research recommendations and additional education innovations were presented.

Ed Higgins (English Emeritus, Writer in Residence) will be releasing a paperback volume of poetry through Fernwood Press early in 2021. In advance of its release, he has written a full-length collection that he’s giving away as part of collecting a mailing list for the purpose of sharing news of the publication and local readings. Hadlock Student Center’s new cleaning policy

October 5th, 2020

Starting Wednesday, Oct. 7, Hadlock is introducing a new cleaning system.

Changes:

  • The white stanchions will be removed, so you will no longer place your dirty weights there.
  • The green and red signs will be removed from the cardio and weight machines.
  • Our staff will be cleaning everything hourly.

How you can help:

  • Please re-rack your own weights.
  • Use wipes or the spray bottles located in the weight room to clean your own weights and equipment between the hourly cleaning times.
  • Be patient during those cleaning times, as the disinfectant spray must sit three to five minutes before equipment can be used again.

Thank you! Questions? Contact Joy Burns (jburns17@georgefox.edu).

Safety and service reminders from Campus Public Safety

October 4th, 2020

Campus Public Safety would like to remind the George Fox community of a few helpful safety tips. Because, while the Newberg campus is located in what is considered a generally safe location, we know that, unfortunately, crimes and emergencies can occur in any location and at any time of day.

We encourage everyone to program Campus Public Safety’s phone number into your cell phone right now so that it is available in case you need it. We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 503-554-2090.

The following are some of the reasons why you may want to give us a call:

  • If you feel unsafe, please call our office so that we can escort you to your destination. Safety escorts are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • In case of an emergency, first, call 911, and then call CPS; we can coordinate with emergency first responders to help direct them to your location.
  • Roadside assistance: We are happy to assist in unlocking your car or giving you a jump start if your battery is dead.
  • Locked out of your room? Campus policy requires that you first try calling a RA from your living area if you are locked out of your room. If you are unable to reach an RA, then you are welcome to call CPS and we will make our best effort to respond as soon as we are available.
  • Reporting crimes and accidents: If you need to report a crime or accident, we can connect you to the proper George Fox department or off-campus agency to complete and file a report.

A victim of a crime is never at fault and should not be blamed for his or her actions. For those who would like to know what precautions they can take in order to reduce the risk of victimization, we offer the following tips:

  • Let someone know where you are going, your expected travel time, and how long you plan on being in that location.
  • If you are running or walking in the evening, wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to drivers and to help someone spot you faster in case of an emergency.
  • Also, if you are running or walking in the evening, go with someone or a group of people you trust. (If you choose this option, be sure to wear the appropriate face coverings.) Stay in well-lit, highly visible areas. Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and walk with purpose. Distractions like using your cell phone while walking can make you particularly vulnerable.
  • In regards to electronics, be sure that your phone is charged before traveling. Wear only one earbud while you walk and keep your volume low.
  • Do not leave valuable items in your car in an open view. Park in well-lit areas where it will be safe for you to return to at night. Take note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car again.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw at eshaw@georgefox.edu.

Attend Civility Project tonight for a discussion about political polarization

October 4th, 2020

The first presidential debate is history. Did it make you more or less worried about the effects of polarization in our country?

If political polarization concerns you, you can do something about it by connecting with the 2020 George Fox Civility Project.

The opening session of the 2020 George Fox Civility Project is tonight (Monday) from 7:30 to 9 p.m., in Bauman Auditorium (and Zoom).

It will be starting with a talk by Professor of Politics Emeritus Ron Mock on what civility is, its grounding for Christians in basic elements of our faith, and its roots for political leaders in their fundamental duty to be stewards of our political culture.

Those who attend will have a chance to evaluate excerpts from political debates for their civility. Feedback collected from attenders will help in creating a political civility inventory that citizens can use to hold candidates and political leaders to account for whether their communications and actions strengthen or destroy our political culture.

You can attend in person at Bauman Auditorium or via Zoom. Attendance in person will be limited. Those who arrive after the room reaches its 100-person COVID capacity will be asked to attend via Zoom. Zoom attendees can access the session at the link above.

Questions? Contact Ron Mock (rmock@georgefox.edu).

Commuters and COVID-19: Thanks to those who have offered support

October 4th, 2020

Over the past month, we have had over 30 commuters who have quarantined for being ill or being close to someone who is ill. Many self-identified and chose to care for our community.

Though there are similarities, the support for those who live off campus looks a little different than for residential students. I track with them regularly, SpIL reaches out to them, commuter assistants have shuttled groceries, and peers rally around them. There is a diverse team that seeks to provide care.

Under faculty supervision, we also had a dozen nursing students reach out daily as care managers. They have provided daily interaction, seeking to track well-being, provide an empathetic resource, and be an advocate for these students. As one who manages all of these concerns, I deeply value their role. I would like to publicly acknowledge and thank them for their investment and care. Well done and thank you!

I hope this is a small glimpse into how we are seeking to care for this segment of our community.

– Dave Johnstone, Director of Commuter Life
