“Get in Step with George Fox University” is the theme of Homecoming 2008, scheduled this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, on the Newberg campus. Hosted by Alumni Relations, this annual celebration includes a diverse selection of events designed to help alumni reconnect with each other and with the university.

Festivities include a Five O’Clock People concert on Friday night, the Alumni Celebration Brunch Saturday morning, class reunions (for the classes of 1938, 1948, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988, and 1998) Saturday afternoon, and a young alumni gathering at Abby’s Pizza on Saturday night. Additionally, this year’s schedule features two special affinity reunions: one for alumni of Pacific College (George Fox pre-1949), and one for alumni of Steve Grant’s (Health and Human Performance) ballroom dance classes.

The university community is invited to attend the opening reception of the Visual Arts department’s faculty exhibit, “Psalms,” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Minthorne Gallery.

Please join us Tuesday, Feb. 5, at lunch, dinner, or both as we feature special Mardi Gras menus. Lunch includes chicken and andouille etouffee, fried oyster po boys with cajun remoulade, and grilled cheddar grit cakes with smoked pepper sauce. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dinner features smoke-roasted pork loin with andouille milk gravy over buttermilk mashed potatoes; jambalaya with shrimp, sausage, and chicken; sweet corn and vegetable gumbo; and our version of the classic Bananas Foster. Dinner is served from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

If you have not already done so, please submit your January time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) this week. Please be sure it is complete, accurate, and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108. The link on the HR website for these documents is: georgefox.edu/offices/hr/forms.html.

If your supervisor is not available to sign it, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed. And one last reminder for completing time sheets: Do not write any hours on the date marked holiday (Jan. 21) unless you worked the holiday.

The university’s annual Health and Benefits Fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Cap and Gown Room. This is the kickoff event for Benefits Open Enrollment; watch for more information about that soon.

The fair is a great opportunity to talk to your benefit reps as well as health and wellness professionals without cost or commitment. Get your hearing tested, pick up some antioxidants, and check your body fat (and then stop for food samples). Event also includes door prizes.

The Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) welcomes applications for the William E. Simon Fellowship.

The Simon Fellowship is a $40,000 unrestricted cash grant awarded to those graduating college seniors who have demonstrated passion, dedication, a high capacity for self-direction, and originality in pursuit of a goal that will strengthen civil society. In addition, two $5,000 cash awards are made to two other outstanding students.

Examples of how recipients may use the award include:• Engage directly in the civic life of their community.
• Help to create opportunity for others, including job creation.
• Advance their expertise.
• Fund the ultimate realization of their noble purpose.

Deadline is February 15, 2008.

A faculty teaching forum scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Executive Dining Room will focus on creating a tool for evaluating your own classes at midterm.

You will get to put together, using ideas from your colleagues, a tool that fits the course or courses you teach. We will share several examples of mid-course evaluations other faculty use. Bring your own and bring your ideas. Tom Johnson (Religious Studies) will lead the discussion.

Mulitcultural Services and the university’s theatre department invite the George Fox community to the production Black Boy, a one-person play featuring Broadway actor Charles Holt, on Feb. 8-9. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. both nights in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Synopsis: Holt plays Richard Wright and a host of additional characters in Wynn Handman’s adaption of Wright’s influential 1945 autobiography Black Boy.

What was life like in the Jim Crow South of the United States as an African American boy in 1908? What were the hardships one had to overcome? In what way was a person buoyed by hope, pride, and dignity? Those questions and others are addressed in the production.

The play is being presented in recognition of Black History Month. Holt has been performing Black Boy for the last seven years throughout the United States. To find out more on Holt and the play, go to charlesholtproductions.com.

1098T Tuition Statements, for claiming educational tax credits, have been mailed to students who were charged tuition in 2007. The IRS requires that we mail forms to your permanent home address. We suggest that you ask your parents, or whoever resides at that address, to watch the mail for the 1098T. It will arrive addressed to you.

If you anticipate using any tuition remission benefit during the 2008-09 academic year (fall, spring and/or summer semesters), whether for yourself, a spouse, and/or dependent(s) – and whether for undergraduate or graduate courses – you need to complete a Tuition Remission Request Form and submit it by Monday, March 3.

Please go to this link and scroll about halfway down the page to find the link to important information for completing the Tuition Remission Request Forms and the forms themselves. Please be sure to read the one page of information  before you begin completing a Tuition Remission Request Form. Incomplete forms will be returned without being processed.

For information about the Tuition Exchange program, contact Missy Terry (Academic Affairs). If you are applying for tuition exchange benefits for your child but are not sure he/she will be granted the scholarship, you should also apply for tuition remission at George Fox.

If you have a student who will likely be a freshman next academic year but who has not yet completed the undergraduate admissions process, please complete a Tuition Remission Request Form. Do not wait until he or she has been accepted.

Again, these completed forms must be in Human Resources by March 3. If you miss the deadline, your tuition remission cannot be guaranteed for next year.
