Chapel will take on a different format on Wednesday, March 4. Spiritual Life is hosting its annual Faculty Journeys chapel at various locations on campus. This is an opportunity to hear from a faculty member of your choice about their personal spiritual journey. Chapel credit is available and worship singing will take place at each venue. This is a reminder that on Wednesday, March 4, Chris Guyer, clarinet, will present a senior recital at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. He will be accompanied by Barbara Stewart on piano and the George Fox Symphonic Band. Admission is free.

We have a few extra tickets for the etiquette dinner scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Cap and Gown Room. Come to Career Services Tuesday, March 3, and get them before they are gone. The event is designed to help students get ahead in the job market by giving them valuable interview experience through the venue of a formal dinner.

Fred Gregory was hired as the special assistant to the president in February. He is a 1966 graduate of George Fox, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology/sociology, and the University of Oregon, where he earned an MS in education in 1970. Fred is a seasoned executive with more than 40 years of experience in the private, not-for-profit and public sectors. He is experienced in executive leadership, financial management, personnel management and fundraising in locales all over the world, including Asia, China, East Africa and Central America. He was with World Concern for 12 years, the last eight as president. He worked for Mercy Corps from 2005 to 2008, serving in Guatemala, China, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan. He also worked as country director for the U.S. Peace Corps in Uzbekistan and Bangladesh (2002-2004). Most recently, he was executive director of PeaceTrees Vietnam, an organization that removes and destroys live unexploded ordnance and replaces them with trees. Fred lives in Newberg and has four grown children living in Washington, Colorado and Texas. He attends 2nd Street Community Church in Newberg.

Linda Miller has joined Career Services to serve as interim associate director though May 1. A graduate of George Fox, where she earned degrees in both psychology and sociology, Linda has worked in the career development, business and nonprofit sectors. Among other jobs, she has served as the director of career development at Northwestern College in Iowa, as the CFO at DRM Consultants of Succasunna, N.J., and as the coordinator of recruitment and student development at Kingdom Building Ministries of Aurora, Colo. Linda’s permanent home is in Denver.

Matt Noble, a part-time security officer, left the university on Feb. 22.

Brielle Deppe left her full-time position of guest services coordinator at Tilikum on March 1. She will continue working there on a part-time basis for a few weeks.

If you have not already done so, please submit your February time sheet (support staff) or time-off report (administrators) this week. Please be sure it is complete, accurate and signed by both you and your supervisor before sending it to HR at Box 6108. If your supervisor is not available to sign it, please send a copy to HR and keep the original until it has been signed.

We have added spaces to include your Cost Center and Employee ID numbers since that information is needed to access your record in PeopleSoft, so please take an extra moment to provide that information.

Meredith Dougherty (Student Life) is no longer temporary but working in the full-time position of student transitions coordinator.

Jeff VandenHoek (School of Management) is now on the Newberg campus as director of the full-time MBA program. Previously, Jeff oversaw the MBA’s executive track.

Amber Russell (School of Management) is now director of the Portland professional track MBA part-time program.

Tom Head (School of Management/International Studies) spoke Feb. 19 at the Women’s Shipping Club of Portland on the topic of “The Role of the World Trade Organization in the Global Economy.” The club is designed to promote a better understanding among its members and the public about the maritime shipping and warehousing industry.

In addition, Tom, Debra Worden (Economics) and John Gorlorwulu (Economics) heard Nobel Laureate Economist Paul Krugman lecture on “The Global Economy” at the World Affairs Council in Portland on Jan. 29. Tom had the opportunity to visit with Krugman before the event and to introduce his George Fox colleagues to him afterwards.

Don Powers (Biology), along with research collaborator Bret Tobalske, were featured in an Oregon Field Guide segment that aired on Oregon Public Broadcasting on Feb. 26 and March 1. The episode discussed hummingbird flight bio-mechanics and energetics. It was entitled “Hummingbirds aren’t just fun to watch, scientists are discovering they still have a lot to learn from them.”

Ed Higgins’ (Writing/Literature) poem “Desk Drawer Labyrinth” is featured in the February 2009 quarterly issue of The Centrifugal Eye, an online Canadian literary journal.

Eric Mortinson (Marketing Communications) won a first-place award in the Los Angeles Film Studies Center’s annual student film festival. Mortinson, who will graduate this spring with a degree in cinema and media communication, won in the “Best Comedy” category for his crime/buddy/road comedy Battery Acid. The film was screened at the Directors’ Guild Theater in Los Angeles on Feb. 28. The LAFSC Awards are designed to recognize students from CCCU colleges who “integrate a robust spirituality with excellent cinematic storytelling.”

Jared Ocker (IT) and Dee Small (Seminary) were selected as the February employees of the month.

How would you like to live in a country with an inflation rate of 231 billion percent? This year’s Peacemaking Forum speaker, Victor Nakah, lives and works in Zimbabwe, where an uncontrolled rate of inflation is only one of the problems that have to be faced on a daily basis. Nakah is a college president and pastor and will be speaking at a number of the forum events Monday and Tuesday, March 9-10.

On Wednesday, March 4, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the Portland Center will sponsor a free resource event, Re-Boot, for people experiencing economic distress due to changes in our economy. Cosponsored by the Graduate Department of Counseling’s Individual & Family Matters Counseling Center and the Trauma Response Institute, it will take place in the Portland South building.

The event will host individuals and organizations offering information on a variety of topics, including where to turn for housing assistance, maximizing shopping dollars, job searching on the Internet, managing pet care on a tight budget, and helping children understand changes in the family’s living situation.

Room 155 in the Portland South building will serve as the main information area. In a separate classroom, people will get a chance to view a variety of dollar-stretching video clips from the numerous consumer advice segments aired by local television stations. Five-minute neck and hand massages, as well as yoga exercises parents can teach their children, also will be offered.

The Portland South building will be open at 5:30 p.m. for participating organizations to set up their information tables. We’ll also set aside the back portion of the lobby for childcare. We’re inviting all members of the George Fox community to participate according to your interest and availability.

George Fox received the lone first-round bye in the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball National Tournament and will open the tournament with a home game Saturday, March 7, against the winner of a first-round game between Chapman University and Occidental College.

Saturday’s game in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students, children and seniors 55 and older. Advance tickets will go on sale in the George Fox athletics office on Wednesday and must be purchased in person. Tickets also will be available at the door. Regular season passes are not valid for the NCAA playoffs.

Campus station KFOX Radio will webcast the game, and LiveStats and live video streaming also will be available.

George Fox, ranked No. 2 in the USA Today/ESPN/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll and No. 3 in the D3hoops.com poll, is one of two remaining undefeated teams in D-III women’s basketball. The Bruins will be making their third straight appearance in the national tournament, fourth in five years, and sixth in 10 seasons of NCAA eligibility. They have a 7-5 record in NCAA postseason play, reaching the “Sweet 16” in 2000, 2005, and 2008, and the “Elite 8” in 2005.

The Bruins earned the Northwest Conference’s automatic bid to the playoffs by winning the conference tournament with victories over Whitman College and the University of Puget Sound.

The university’s theatre department invites the community to its spring production, The Triumph of Love, March 5-7 and March 12-15 in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. March 5-7 and 12-14 and at 2 p.m. on March 15.

The play, directed by Rhett Luedtke (Performing Arts), is an 18th-century romantic comedy filled with all the confusions and complexities of love. Princess Leonide’s world turns upside down when she falls in love with a young man who can rightfully usurp her kingdom. Unfortunately, her love interest is being tutored by an over-rational philosopher who hates love and has taught the young man to hate women. So Leonide and her maid, Corine, dress up as men, invade the philosopher’s estate and try to prove to the men that love conquers all.

Employees receive one complimentary ticket, available for pick-up at the University Store. Students are welcome to see the show free of charge on Thursday, March 5, and Thursday, March 12, and may pick up those tickets at the University Store. The cost is $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. To purchase tickets or find out more, visit theatre.georgefox.edu.

In an effort to help impact current students and retain them for next academic year, we are launching a simple and focused retention project. We are looking for 200 faculty/staff to serve as a “retention coach” for six students each for the next eight weeks.

A communication plan with suggested “talking points” has been developed and will be provided to each “coach.” If you are interested in helping, please let Sarah King (Enrollment Services) know immediately. We’d like the first contact to happen this week.

The Department of Performing Arts continues the busy recital season this week with exciting performances from our students. All events will be held in Bauman Auditorium.

On Wednesday, March 4, Chris Guyer, clarinet, will present a senior recital at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, March 6, from 12:40 to 1:30 p.m., the second Students in Recital of the semester is scheduled. Then, at 7:30 p.m. that evening, pianists Kenneth Willson, Barbara Stewart, Dan Miller, Becca Couch, Bethany Taft, Joseph Forster, James Pick, Cameron DeWhitt, Allen Cassell, Andrew Payne, and Beth Sellers will present a “Multi-Piano Extravaganza.”

Finally, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, (please note the time change), Emily Yarnold, soprano, and Ashley Salisbury, mezzo-soprano, will present their junior recital.

Please join us in supporting our students. Admission is free.
