University Mail Services

All university offices in Newberg and at regional sites will be closed on Monday, May 31, to observe the Memorial Day holiday. Libraries in Newberg and at the Portland and Salem centers also will be closed.

Following are guidelines regarding this weekend’s e-mail conversion, scheduled to begin Friday night and be completed by Tuesday, June 1:

• The conversion process may take all three days for your e-mail to be converted.
• Begin sending and receiving in mail.georgefox,edu Friday after 7 p.m. (PDT)
• Your George Fox e-mail address will remain the same

If you have always forwarded your George Fox e-mail, you need to update your forwarding. You can forward your georgefox e-mail to any non-GFU e-mail account you wish (including your non-GFU Gmail). Here are step-by-step instructions to forward your e-mail from the new system:

• Go to mail.georgefox.edu and login to your George Fox Gmail account. In the upper right hand corner of the screen, click on “Settings.”
• In the settings menu, click on “Forwarding” and “POP/IMAP.”
• In the Forwarding and POP/IMAP menu, select “Forward a copy of incoming mail to.” A box will pop up asking for your forwarding address.
• After you enter your forwarding address and click next, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to your forwarding address. Check your e-mail at the address to which you are forwarding and you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Click on the link provided to confirm the request.
• You will then be directed to a Gmail page confirming that your George Fox Gmail account will now be forwarded to another e-mail address.
• See Forwarding Your George Fox E-mail for instructions with illustrations.

The university’s e-mail conversion to Gmail is scheduled from 5 p.m. Friday, May 28, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, June 1. The conversion process may take all three days for your e-mail to be converted. After 7 p.m. (PDT) Friday, you can begin sending and receiving mail at mail.georgefox.edu. Your George Fox e-mail address will remain the same.

Joel Kelley joined Marketing Communications as a programmer in May after graduating from the university this spring with a bachelor’s degree in history. As a student, he worked this past school year as a system administrator for the computer science and information systems department, and previously, he was a student manager in George Fox’s IT department in 2007-08. Joel also lived in Egypt for four months in 2009, where he volunteered as a webmaster for the Association for the Protection of the Environment. He and his wife Melissa live in Newberg and attend 2nd Street Community Church.

Christiana Spradling joined Plant Services as a custodian at the Portland Center in April. She has worked as a night custodian at Western Oregon University the past two years and, before that, served in custodial positions in the Salem-Keizer School District and at Willamette University. Christiana attended both Chemeketa Community College and The Evergreen State College. She lives in Independence and attends Salem Alliance Church.

Colin Saxton, superintendent of the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends, has assumed the role of interim director of the Friends Center at the seminary. The center, a joint venture between NWYM and George Fox Evangelical Seminary, offers classes with a specific Quaker focus and equips Friends leaders for service to the church. Saxton replaces Carole Spencer, who accepted a faculty position at the Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Ind.

Martha Iancu (Communication Arts/English Language Institute) attended the 44th Annual TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Convention in Boston March 24-27. Her two presentations were “Collectivism Meets Individualism: Techniques for a Linked Intercultural Communication Class” and “Novel-Reading Techniques for High Beginners” (a poster session). Martha commends Elizabeth Holme of Print Services for her assistance in the technical aspects of producing the poster, which may be viewed at the entrance to the conference room in Lemmons 9.

Dave Johnstone (Student Life) wrote a review of Miroslav Volf’s The End of Memory: Remembering Rightly in a Violent World (2006), published in the Spring 2010 Journal of Education & Christian Belief. He also wrote an article, “The Gap in the Curtain: Seeing Pieces of a Residential Community’s Future,” that was published in the Winter 2010 issue of Koinonia.

Amy Dee (School of Education) and Mark McMinn were honored as the university’s 2009-10 teaching award recipients at the graduate level. Amy won the Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Teaching, while Mark was recipient of the Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship.

Darryl Brown (Marketing Communication) was named the 2009-10 Administrative Staff Employee of the Year at the university’s employee recognition event in May. Also honored was Brenda Graf (MAT), named the Support Staff Employee of the Year.

Four of Ed Higgins’ (English) anti-war haiku, titled “Smelling of Death,” are part of the March 5-7, 2010 Search For Peace Art Exhibit sponsored by Portland’s St. Andrew Community Center and St. Pius X Parish. In addition, a story Ed wrote, titled “Five,” was published in the online German literary journal Blue Print Review. The publication’s special flash fiction issue featured stories under a 1,000 words. Ed’s micro story is about 180 words and grew out of an exercise on flash fiction in his Writing Fiction course last semester.

Former faculty member John Bowman died of a heart attack on May 6. John was a member of the music faculty at George Fox from 1980 until retiring in 2007. As professor of music, he conducted numerous George Fox choirs and the handbell ringers, as well as taught a variety of courses in the music program. He and his wife, Shari, were traveling in Germany when he died.

The university lost a longtime former professor and administrator with the death of Lee Nash on May 15. Lee arrived at George Fox in 1975 as a professor of history and later served as vice president for academic affairs and associate dean of the school in the 1980s. Even after “retiring” in the early 1990s, he taught part time and directed the university’s biennial Herbert Hoover Symposium. Lee is survived by his wife, Grayce, and children Murray, LeAnn and Torrey and their families. A memorial service for Lee is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Newberg Friends Church.

An all-employee meeting is scheduled from 3:40 to 5 p.m. this Thursday, May 27, in Hoover 105. The main focus of the meeting will be to provide the latest enrollment projections and present plans for accommodating a large incoming freshman class.
