For the fourth time in the last 12 years, the university is hosting an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser – this time to benefit longtime art professor Doug Campbell as he continues to recover from a November 2012 stroke.

Join us Friday, March 7, for an “Empty Bowls” dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall. For $12, attendees will receive a meal in a handmade ceramic bowl created by students, alumni, faculty members and guest professional artists. The cost is $10 per person for families of four or more. Sponsoring the event are Bob’s Red Mill, Newberg Bakery and food service provider Bon Appetit.

To prepare, 40 students, alumni, professors and professional and amateur artists from all over the region gathered for a “throw-a-thon” in George Fox’s ceramics lab last November. In all, about 2,200 bowls were created, according to event organizer Mark Terry.

The George Fox University Alumni Association board of directors is responsible for awarding one annual three-year scholarship to a George Fox student. As long as the scholarship recipient meets the requirements each year, there will be no reapplication process necessary.

The scholarship will be given in the amount of $2,500 each year, totaling $7,500 after three years. Students applying must be anticipating to graduate in spring 2016 and have a cumulative 3.25 GPA through fall 2013.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 3.

The music department is putting on a Winter Choir Concert, entitled “Music of Hope,” at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, March 1, in Bauman Auditorium.

The concert will feature our three choral groups and has been programmed specifically as a tribute to Nelson Mandela and his lifelong peace efforts. There is a thematic message of peace, hope and tranquility throughout the selections of music.

Admission is free!

Due to the high demand for Sadie Hawkins tickets, ASC has rented a second boat, which means 400 more spots will now be available, while they last.

If you are graduating this May, stop by the Exodus Grad Fair on Wednesday or Thursday, March 5-6, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Stevens Center Atrium. You can pick up your cap and gown, order graduation announcements, enjoy some free food, and much more!

Sometime this past weekend a cylindrical can (painted flat gray) containing a temperature sensor was removed from the shrubbery behind the Weesner apartments. This apparatus was part of a student project. The temperature sensor (which was inside the can) is a small plastic box with the word “Hobo” on the outside.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of this sensor, we would very much like to have it back. These sensors are irreplaceable and the data they contain is important to the students. If you have any information, please contact Don Powers (dpowers@georgefox.edu) or the biology department.

Every year, the last week of February is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. Schools, churches and communities plan events to raise awareness about the stark realities of eating disorders. There is a theme every year, and this year’s theme is, “I Had No Idea That Eating Disorders Can Destroy Lives.” Oftentimes, it is the misconceptions that surround eating disorders that hold people back from receiving proper treatment.

This week at George Fox, two events are planned as a way to educate our community about eating disorders and best learn how to walk alongside those who are struggling. The hope is also that even if someone hasn’t struggled with an eating disorder, everyone has some kind of relationship with food and the body. Everyone, on some level, can relate to nutrition, exercise, body image and self-esteem.

At 7 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) in EHS 102 we will show Someday Melissa, a film that chronicles one young woman’s struggle with an eating disorder and how this affects her and her loved ones. Chapel credit is available.

On Thursday, Feb. 27, during Shalom time (9 p.m. in Cap and Gown Room), we will have a discussion panel, featuring panelists from the Columbia River Eating Disorders Network. Come and be educated about eating disorders and learn how to walk alongside others who are struggling.

Please join the College of Engineering for a research seminar, entitled “Renewable Energy: What’s the Big Deal?” presented by our engineering faculty candidate, Dr. Chad Stillinger. It will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, in EHS 102.

This presentation will discuss the main reasons why renewable energy is such an important topic in the world today and review the latest research from Stillinger in the areas of ocean wave energy and micro-hydro turbines for developing countries.

Stillinger received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from George Fox in 2004 and his PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Oregon State University in 2011. He worked in industry as a professional controls engineer for three years designing, testing and implementing custom control systems for companies such as Boeing, Weyerhaeuser and ADASA.

He then joined the Wallace Energy Systems and Renewables Facility (WESRF) wave energy team in 2007 and has helped design, build and test more than five different wave energy converters in collaboration with Columbia Power Technologies. Stillinger is currently an assistant professor at Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), and his research interests are in the field of renewable energy, controls, power electronics, embedded systems, electro-mechanical conversion and industrial automation.
