Deadlines for the end-of-month (non-student) payroll:

November and December holidays bring many things, including early deadlines for payroll data entry. Normally we must receive check requests and contracts by the 18th of the month to ensure they will be included in the current payroll, but we’ll need everything earlier for the next two months due to shorter processing time. We will include items received by these dates in the month-end payroll:

November: Thursday the 14th
December: Friday the 13th

As a reminder, we always need time sheets and time-off reports (complete and signed, please) by the 10th of every month for regular staff and administrators. Temporary and hourly paid staff should bring time sheets to HR on or before the 15th of the month for these two months.

Vacation: Use it, don’t lose it!

Please take a look at your vacation balance on your October pay statement. It will include accruals through October and vacation taken through September. Remember that you may carry 12 months of your accrual into 2014, so be sure to plan accordingly. Tables for calculating your accrual are on the Payroll Forms webpage, along with instructions for accessing your pay statement in MyGFU.

We have discovered a grade book issue in FoxTALE over the last few days. It is a bug that came with this month’s update.

When you submit grades directly in the grade book (i.e. override in a grading cell) the Category Total (if you are using categories) and the Course Total automatically become overridden as well. The student will not see progress throughout the course, but will only see an initial grade submitted (i.e. the Course Total has been frozen from the beginning of your grading process).

The Moodle community has started documenting this issue and making efforts to fix it. We are hoping that the issue will resolve soon.

We recommend the method Simple Assignment Setup and Grading (written guide) or Simple Assignment Setup and Grading (two-minute video). There are no issues when grades are submitted through the assignment.

Sobelson, an alumna of George Fox, will share simple yet effective ways to make healthy food choices on a budget. Her presentation includes a cooking demonstration, food samples, recipe handouts and product samples. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

The university community is invited to a free presentation, “Healthy Eating on a Budget,” on the Newberg campus this Thursday, Oct. 24. Lori Sobelson, director of corporate outreach for Bob’s Red Mill, will speak from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Sobelson, an alumna of George Fox, will share simple yet effective ways to make healthy food choices on a budget. Her presentation includes a cooking demonstration, food samples, recipe handouts and product samples. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

As director of corporate outreach, Sobelson oversees founders Bob and Charlee Moore’s philanthropy efforts. She does public speaking and teaching, attends trade shows and health conferences, and oversees the Bob’s Red Mill Cooking and Baking School. Previously, she taught at the Culinary Institute of America.

Cancer claims the lives of nearly 8 million people worldwide annually, with breast and prostate cancer deaths totaling more that 500,000 each year. To borrow a metaphor from his favorite movie, Star Wars, Dr. Schmitt has joined the scientific fight against cancer, a.k.a. the “evil Death Star.” His research focuses on the cell, biochemical and molecular events that control, regulate or participate in cancer.

In his lecture, Dr. Schmitt will highlight recent discoveries from his laboratory. Among the questions he will address are “Which hormones promote breast and prostate cancer growth and metastasis?,” “What are CaM Kinases and why are they important?,” What role might Vitamin D play in blocking cancer growth?” and “How do we generate hope for people who are battling cancer?”

You are invited to join us for our seminary’s Ministry in Contemporary Culture event on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 155 at the Portland Center. We will explore how the humanity of Jesus Christ impacts how we undertake ministry in the Pacific Northwest.

We are honored to have Northern Seminary professor and respected theologian Cherith Fee Nordling, daughter of theologian Gordon Fee, as our plenary speaker in the morning. The afternoon will feature workshops led by local church, ministry and nonprofit leaders.

For this day-long event, we are partnering with Missio Alliance, a national network of churches, denominations and schools committed to equipping one another for more faithful participation in God’s mission. Missio Alliance represents some of the most leading-edge pastors, practitioners and theologians in the church today.

Three questions and three reasons to participate:

1. Why does the Humanity of God’s Son matter every day? Cherith will provoke us to think more deeply about Jesus’ humanity and its implications for mission.
2. What is God doing in our neighborhoods? In the workshops we will discover and engage with local Northwest practitioners and men and women from the George Fox Evangelical Seminary community who are effecting change in their ministry contexts.
3. How can we better connect? Meet and network with other Northwest people, the seminary community and Missio Alliance leaders.
