In support of our Creation Care values, Human Resources has issued year-end W-2 forms online in “Self Service” for all employees. In order for the university to save the expense of purchasing, printing, stuffing into envelopes and delivering your form by campus mail, the law requires that you give your consent to receiving this form online.
If you consented last year, you do not need to do so again. You can verify your consent status or give consent for the first time by following the steps below. It only takes about 30 seconds, so we encourage you to take care of it as soon as possible (perhaps right now?) Here’s how:
- Log in to mygfu.georgefox.edu
- From the menu at left, select “Self Service”
- Select “Payroll and Compensation”
- Select “W-2/W-2c Consent”
- Check your current status. Does it say “Consent received?” If so, thank you! You’re done. If not …
- Read the statement and check the box to give consent
- Enter your GFU password as a confirmation of your identity and click “Continue”
- Click OK
You’ll receive a confirmation e-mail of your decision shortly after completing this process. And just to be clear, you will only have to do this once — not every year.
Thanks very much. Contact Katie Sol at ksol@georgefox.edu with questions.

Attention faculty and staff: I am a current George Fox student working on a carbon footprint project for the university and am looking for information on the distance you travel from home to school. A short three-question survey was created in order to gather some data for the project.
If you could take just a couple of minutes to complete this survey, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

The School of Physical Therapy invites the university community to hear Dr. Tim Flynn (PT, PhD), distinguished professor at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, as he lectures on “Turning the Traditional Classroom into a 21st Century Knowledge Exchange.” He will join us from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Hoover 105.
Synopsis
Let’s face it: Technology is changing the face of education from preschool through graduate school. Physical therapy education is no exception. Despite a body of evidence suggesting that the traditional lecture style instruction is lacking, it remains the predominant mode of information exchange.
In the last decade there has been a move toward the flipped classroom where students watch lectures at home at their pace and communicate with peers and faculty with online discussions. Face-to-face time with the faculty focuses on engaging problem solving and laboratory experiences.
This presentation will discuss how current best evidence lectures are produced and shared as homework assignments outside of class while sacred classroom time is reserved for collaborative work and hands-on learning activities. We will describe mechanisms to ensure learning is occurring and preliminary outcomes using this methodology.
Upon completion, attendees will be able to:
- Define blended learning
- Identify and discuss the six primary blended learning models
- Describe characteristics of successful online learners and teachers
- Describe the flipped classroom model
- Identify key technical components required to successfully implement the flipped classroom model in DPT education
- Examine the benefits, risks and challenges of this model
Dr. Flynn is board-certified in orthopaedic physical therapy, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and a frequent research presenter at state, national and international meetings.
Questions? Contact Holly Kirby at hkirby@georgefox.edu.

A new version of Google bar is coming – something we announced was coming a few weeks ago in our TechTips group. The change occurred immediately for public Google accounts, and now Google has announced it’s ready for Google Apps.
They are removing the black navigation bar at the top of the screen that lets you quickly get to other Google products such as Drive, Calendar, Groups, etc., and replacing it with a small white grid in the upper right corner that gives you a listing of the different apps.
Google’s announcement (released on 10/30/2013) …
We are rolling out a new version of the Google bar for Google Apps users. This is designed to be simpler and more consistent with Android and Chrome OS. It includes notifications, a Google+ share box (if Google+ is enabled), and a new App Launcher with links to other Google products.
To see what it looks like, check out the TechTip posting we sent out.

Deadlines for the end-of-month (non-student) payroll:
November and December holidays bring many things, including early deadlines for payroll data entry. Normally we must receive check requests and contracts by the 18th of the month to ensure they will be included in the current payroll, but we’ll need everything earlier for the next two months due to shorter processing time. We will include items received by these dates in the month-end payroll:
November: Thursday the 14th
December: Friday the 13th
As a reminder, we always need time sheets and time-off reports (complete and signed, please) by the 10th of every month for regular staff and administrators. Temporary and hourly paid staff should bring time sheets to HR on or before the 15th of the month for these two months.
Vacation: Use it, don’t lose it!
Please take a look at your vacation balance on your October pay statement. It will include accruals through October and vacation taken through September. Remember that you may carry 12 months of your accrual into 2014, so be sure to plan accordingly. Tables for calculating your accrual are on the Payroll Forms webpage, along with instructions for accessing your pay statement in MyGFU.
Thank you,
– HR
