Tax assistance program postponed to next Saturday, Feb. 15

The free tax assistance help offered in conjunction with the College of Business and the AARP scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, will be postponed until Saturday, Feb. 15. Assistance will be provided during normal operating hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Princeton professor speaks on Newberg campus Thursday

The university community is invited to a free presentation by Robert P. George, PhD, from Princeton University this week on the Newberg campus. George will present a lecture entitled “Religious Liberty and the Rights of Conscience” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in Bauman Auditorium.

George is the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in Ideals and Institutions at Princeton. He is the author of numerous books in the fields of constitutional law, ethics and legal and political theory. His visit is being sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program. Mileage rate change effective this month

The IRS has adjusted the standard mileage rate used to calculate the cost of operating an automobile for business. The rate has dropped from 56.5 cents per mile to 56 cents per mile. All mileage occurring on or after Feb. 1 will be reimbursed at the 56-cent rate.

Please note deposit procedure change

The financial affairs office will implement an on-site electronic deposit system beginning in late February. Under the new system, checks will be deposited on-site, while cash will be taken to the bank and deposited separately.

To track deposits more efficiently under the new system, we are requesting that cash deposits be submitted separately from the check deposits, beginning Feb. 5.

Reminder: ‘Brain, Mind & Free Will’ lecture is Monday

The university’s Department of Biology and Chemistry invites you to join us for the fourth annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in Bauman Auditorium.

Dr. Bill Newsome, PhD, an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Professor of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, will present “Brain, Mind & Free Will: Did My Neurons Make Me Do It?” Among the questions to be discussed: “Are we just the sum of our neurons?,” “Does my brain shape me, or do I shape my brain?” and “Is freedom of choice an illusion?”

Faith and Culture Writers Conference hosted on campus March 7-8

The Department of English invites you to the Faith and Culture Writers Conference taking place on the Newberg campus Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. A number of well-known writers will be on campus, including Sarah Bessey, Tony Kriz, Sarah Thebarge and Deidra Riggs, among others.

The event also offers the opportunity to meet with literary agents and editors. The conference is for those seeking inspiration in their writing, and in their lives. Our theme is “Super Bowl,” and we will serve fresh gluten-free tortilla chips and house-made salsa, as well as lemon-lime agua fresca.

Provost Linda Samek will share at length about how students flow through the university. Specifically, she will discuss undergraduate major trends (majors that give to others, majors that grow after students arrive and “destination majors” that attract students who come, stay and graduate in that major).

At the Portland Center, we will have a live video feed and also serve treats in Room 160.

The Textbook Annex is beginning the process of returning unsold books. After next week, there will be limited available stock. If you will need a book later in the semester, now is the time to come purchase/rent it.

Check out our website (gfubookstore.com) to see if the book is listed as “in store.” If it is, then we have it here. You are welcome to come to the Annex or order through our website. Online orders will be processed/shipped the next business day.
