Were you homeschooled in high school? Do you know a student who was? If this post sounds familiar, it is! We are your friendly neighborhood homeschoolers who have completed our focus groups and now need your help with our survey.

My partner and I are submitting a research paper to present at the Northwest Communication Association Conference in April. If you or anyone you know was homeschooled (at least a year) during high school, please help us out.

If you pass this along to other former homeschoolers attending college, you will broaden the scope of our survey results, making them more accurate and applicable to our purpose. Please let us utilize your network. We know there are a lot of fantastic homeschoolers out there who will help us succeed!

This survey should take around 20 minutes, and all responses will be anonymous. The survey will be available for roughly one week, so please participate and share as soon as possible.

This Thursday, Jan. 18, is President Robin Baker’s 60th birthday. It also happens to be the date of our next all-employee meeting, so join us as we get campus updates and celebrate Robin’s big day! We will have birthday cake for all to enjoy.

The meeting is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Canyon Commons. It will be live-streamed at the Portland Center in Room 160.

The university’s offices, libraries and bookstores will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Also closed will be the Fitness Center on the Newberg campus.

Our annual participation in the 2018 MLK Day of Service will take place on Monday, Jan. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Warner Pacific College. Any and all students, staff and faculty are encouraged to register and join in this great community-building event.

Transportation to and from George Fox’s Newberg campus will be provided, as will lunch. We will be serving alongside participants from Warner, Concordia University, Portland Community College, Mt. Hood Community College, Portland State University and more!

All are invited to a special Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg) this Monday, Jan. 15, to commemorate Dr. King’s life and legacy. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the main program beginning at 6 p.m.

Refreshments and resources will be available following the program. Ines Peña, a Newberg High School graduate and local human rights activist, will give a keynote address on the program theme, “Be the Dream.”

Coworker Recognition

Do you know someone who deserves special recognition for awesome work at our next all-employee meeting? Payroll Items Due Jan. 16

All payroll items such as check requests, adjunct contracts, W-4, direct deposit, or benefit changes are due by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, in order to be effective for January.

Update Your Personal Information and Consent for W-2 by Jan. 12

Make sure your mailing address is correct for year-end reporting. You can check it and update if necessary in MyGFU > Self-Service > Campus Personal Info.

You can also elect to have your W-2 available via MyGFU rather than mailed. To sign up or check to see if you already have, go to MyGFU > Self-Service > Payroll and Compensation > W-2/W-2c Consent.

Library study rooms are now available for instant booking! Forget to book a room before the day you need it? Not a problem! Look for an open time slot on the online booking calendar, book the room instantly from your mobile device, and walk right in!

If you are in the library and find an open room, be sure to book it before going in to make sure you can keep it!

Book a study room in three simple steps:

1. Visit the booking calendar to see today’s confirmed bookings and open time slots. Book Murdock Learning Resource Center rooms here and Portland Center library rooms at this link.
2. Click the boxes for the room and time slots you want (up to four hours).
3. Scroll, fill out the form and click “Submit my Booking.”

FoxTALE was updated over the Christmas break, and you will see some changes when you first log into FoxTALE to see your list of courses. View this video for an overview: FoxTALE Course Overview.

Visit the FoxTALE for Faculty webpage for guides and resources and to learn more about the new features added.

Use your new, empty Spring 2018 sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.

You may need to add sections to your course home page. This video shows you how: Manage Course Sections.

Your Spring 2018 sites are hidden to students. When you are ready to make a site available, from the course home page:

• Go to Administration> Course administration > Edit settings
• Scroll down to the “Visible” section and change “Hide” to “Show”
• Just below the Visible setting is the Course start date where you can make changes if needed.
• “Save changes” at the bottom

Remember that all students enrolled in your class in MyGFU will automatically be enrolled in your FoxTALE course site. As students add and drop your course in MyGFU, they will be added or removed automatically from your FoxTALE site.

Metacourses may be used in special cases where you want to use one FoxTALE site for multiple sections of the same class. If you would like to use a metacourse, contact the Service Desk for assistance with setting them up.

In an effort to increase overall security and the stability of FoxTALE, we will introduce a late-December upgrade to our maintenance schedule, which currently includes our August upgrade and bi-monthly updates.

A December upgrade will bring our security to the highest level and resolve issues. In addition, December upgrades will make the introduction of new features a bit more incremental.

Our December 2017 upgrade is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 28, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. FoxTALE will be unavailable during this time.

Please celebrate with us Debby O’Kelley at her retirement party today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m.. Debby started working for George Fox in the university’s mail room 25 years ago, but most people know her as the former office manager for Plant Services.

Please stop by Canyon Commons for a chance to thank Debby for her 25 years of service.

The Newberg-to-Portland Center courier service will only deliver on Thursday, Dec. 28, during Christmas break. It will resume its regular schedule the following week.
