We are still in need of willing volunteers to serve as ushers at spring commencement on Saturday, May 4. Come help take tickets at the gate, hand out programs, direct graduates’ family and friends to their seats, and make graduation a special event for everyone!

All George Fox employees who participate as ushers will have the option to receive $50 through payroll, or take three hours off in lieu of this gift. Non-George Fox volunteers will receive a gift card in the same amount.

This past year a new policy was instituted for all international travel by employees of the university. Any trip funded by the university must register with the Center for Study Abroad. Thus the following George Fox International Travel Policy has been approved:

Students and employees traveling through one of George Fox University’s international travel opportunities are required to register with the George Fox Center for Study Abroad and complete all forms, protocols and procedures, abide by all policies, and comply with all deadlines outlined in the International Travel Policies and Procedures Manual. Failure to do so may result in the group or student’s suspension from travel through the university, including withholding of funding and institutional support.

This policy is for all faculty and staff, whether they are traveling with students or traveling alone. The goal of this policy is to ensure that all travelers are covered by the university’s insurance and protected as much as possible from liability. The Center for Study Abroad will act as a central location that tracks where George Fox-sponsored trips are traveling in case of emergency. If there are any issues in that part of the world (unrest, terrorism, natural disaster) or with a student on a trip (illness, accident, etc.), travelers can communicate with our office on how to best handle the situation

If you are going to travel internationally on university business (e.g. recruitment trips, partnership development trips, athletic trips, conferences, etc.), please contact Lynn Scott, assistant director of Study Abroad, at lscott@georgefox.edu, and she can help you with the details. We ask that you contact her as soon as possible, at least one month before you travel for personal travel and at least three months before you travel with a group. For forms and information, please visit our website.

On his recent trip to England, President Robin Baker had the opportunity to visit a pen museum in Birmingham, a city that was once the center of pen manufacturing in the world.

The trip not only gave Robin, a collector of pens, a chance to learn more about his hobby, it inspired him to reflect on how the practice of writing has changed dramatically in recent years. You can read his thoughts in this blog post.

The William Penn Honors Program invites the public to a free lecture, “Rethinking Azusa: If It Wasn’t for the Women,” presented by professor and author Keri Day, tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Day, an associate professor of constructive theology and African American religion at Princeton Theological Seminary, will present a moving examination of the Azusa Street Revival of 1906 to 1915 and powerfully weave her talk into the contemporary concerns of today.

Day’s teaching and research interests are in womanist/feminist theologies, social critical theory, cultural studies, economics, and Afro-Pentecostalism. She is the author of Unfinished Business: Black Women, The Black Church, and the Struggle to Thrive in America (2012) and Religious Resistance to Neoliberalism: Womanist and Black Feminist Perspectives (2015).

She is at work on her third book manuscript, which explores how early Pentecostalism contributes to the religious and democratic imagination. In 2017, she was recognized by ABC News as one of six black women at the “center of gravity” in theological education in America.

In his recent visit to England, President Robin Baker had an opportunity to visit Bunhill Fields, a cemetery in London that is the burial place for those who were considered “dissenters” in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Not far from Bunhill is the gravesite of George Fox, an unassuming grave that is representative of the Quakers’ belief that “all are valuable” and that “all are made one in death.” You can read his reflections on the trip in this blog post.

The university community is invited to a memorial service for Roger Minthorne at 1 p.m. this Friday, April 5, at Countryside Community Church in Sherwood (18810 S.W. Kruger Road).

Roger was an honorary trustee and one of the “giants” in the George Fox community. He served on the school’s board of trustees for several years and had a deep commitment to the mission of George Fox University as well as Twin Rocks Camp, Camp Tilikum, and the local church.

We will miss Roger and his consistent presence. Please keep his wife, Mildred, and the family in your prayers.
