The university is pleased to offer a confidential campus advocate in partnership with the Sexual Misconduct CARE (Campus Awareness, Response and Education) team.
The campus advocate is a George Fox MSW intern located at the Moore House/Intercultural Resource Center on the Newberg campus. She is qualified to provide advocacy, accompaniment, and referral service to survivors of all forms of violence – including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, hate crimes, stalking, sexual harassment, and other forms of sexual misconduct – in order to facilitate and promote individual recovery and success.
Confidential campus advocates will not share any information or details of your experience without your permission unless you are at risk of harming yourself or others.
If you wish to seek services, walk-ins are welcome Mondays between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Thursdays between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and Fridays between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Appointments are also available upon request.

The Newberg campus will be closed tomorrow (Friday) for the mid-semester holiday. All Newberg offices and the Murdock Library will be closed. The Bruin Store will be open for its normal Friday business hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Although the Murdock Library will be closed, the 24-hour space will remain open.
The university community is invited to attend the Fall Faculty Lecture, presented by Associate Professor of Nursing Lorretta Krautscheid, this Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Hoover 105.
Krautscheid, chair of the College of Nursing and recipient of the 2020-21 Faculty Achievement Award for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, will present “Moral Distress: What Do We Know and What Can Be Done?”
Her presentation will provide insight into a nursing attrition dilemma that has seen approximately 17% of newly registered nurses leave the profession within the first year of practice. She contends that moral distress, defined as feeling constrained from action upon one’s ethical knowing, is a key factor in this trend.
She will present moral distress research findings among students and novice post-licensure nurses and discuss education recommendations promoting resilience-protective factors.

The Office of the President has a Presidential Appearance Request Form that will assist in managing the president’s schedule. The president strives to accommodate as many engagement requests which support the mission of the university as possible. The completion of this form is required for anyone desiring the president (and spouse) be present and/or participate at an event.

The Richter Scholars program distributes funds to support student research activities that are devised, initiated and carried out by individual student researchers, with mentorship, guidance and expertise provided by a faculty mentor. The purpose of these funds is to support educational research opportunities that encourage the practice of independent thought, leading to independent achievement and personal responsibility.
For the purpose of this program, research is defined as a knowledge-generating activity that is designed to provide new information on a topic, tool or process, and that proceeds according to established and accepted research methods.
*Faculty mentors: Please note that several important proposal elements and eligibility requirements have been recently updated. Please thoroughly read through all posted documentation as you work with your student mentee to prepare a proposal.

The university community is invited to hear Doug Bandow speak on “The American Republic Turned Superpower: The Founders Were Right about Entangling Alliances Then and Now” this Monday, Oct. 18, at 6:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.
Bandow, a former special assistant to President Ronald Reagan and now senior fellow at the Cato Institute, writes regularly for leading publications such as Fortune magazine, National Interest, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Times. The event is made possible by the Jack Miller Center through a grant from M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.

After 20 months of creating theatre in digital and outdoor venues, the university’s theatre program is returning to Wood-Mar Auditorium for our fall production of Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. The show runs Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 28-30, at 7:30 p.m., and concludes with a Sunday matinee on Oct. 31 at 2 p.m.

All patrons must be masked. Our ticketing system will automatically place one empty seat on either side of your ticket purchase to create extra space between you and the patrons next to you. We encourage all patrons to be vaccinated to help protect our actors and fellow audience members from COVID-19.

If you are uncomfortable attending the production in person due to the pandemic – or can’t make the trip for any reason – please feel free to purchase our livestream options available on either Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m., or Sunday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m.

Prominent Christian political commentator and attorney David French will issue a call for robust civility in politics at a free presentation in Bauman Auditorium at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1. The talk, entitled “Jesus Loves Your Political Enemies, and America Needs You to Love Them Too,†is available via a Zoom stream; those who attend in person are required to wear masks.
French is a senior editor at The Dispatch and a columnist for Time magazine. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he served as a lecturer at Cornell Law School. After law school, he practiced law with a focus on religious liberty issues.
He advises Christians not to wait for our political leaders to fix America’s drift toward bitter division. “There is no policy fix for malice and misinformation†he says. “There is no five-point plan for national harmony.†Instead, French says it is up to the church to build a healthier political culture, embracing people across the political spectrum, keeping the Ninth Commandment (against bearing false witness), and demonstrating love for our political enemies.
He speaks to Christians concerned about the polarization and alienation metastasizing in our communities, and in politics at every level, both nationally and locally. French’s most recent book is “Divided We Fall: America’s Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation.”
The event is being hosted by the George Fox Civility Project, an initiative launched during the 2020-21 academic year out of concern about the polarization and alienation in political culture at every level (national, state and local). It sponsors events, publishes a newsletter, and maintains a website with information about civility.

While most student concerns and complaints can and should be resolved informally, there is a formal general complaint procedure described in the “Support for Students†section of the Undergraduate Student Handbook as well as on the Graduate/DPS Policies page of the website.
Please note that these procedures cover complaints of a general nature and do not supersede specific policies involving special cases such as grade appeals, sexual harassment, etc., which are covered elsewhere in the Student Handbook, Catalog or Graduate/DPS Policies.

Our focus as a servant engineering team is to better understand the challenges of living with physical limitations, in an effort to design and produce a prototype device to aid in everyday life activities! Mail Services is moving! On Monday, Oct. 18, Mail Services will officially be its new space in the Roberts Center and no longer in the North Street Annex building.
We will be accessible from the doors facing Sherman Street. To prepare for the big move, we will be closed Oct. 14-17. Therefore, please come pick up your packages by the end of the day on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

The Voices Project Conference is back in person this year! We will be kicking off the two-day-long conference on Friday, Oct. 15, in Bauman Auditorium, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday in Bauman, and from 9:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday in Canyon Commons. This year’s theme is “Identity: The Beauty, Scars, Trauma, and Power of BIPOC.†Each year, the conference highlights multicultural and multiethnic leadership in the U.S. It’s open to all students and faculty and community members.

Join us for our next search advocate training to learn how to promote equitable hiring practices in the workplace, and to further encourage the Be Known promise.
The workshop series establishes a theoretical foundation of current research about implicit bias and diversity, information about the changing legal landscape in hiring, and an overview of inclusive employment principles.
Rebecca Hernandez and Nichole Drew will teach this two-day session Wednesday, Nov. 3, and Thursday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both days in Hoover 250. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m., and lunch will also be provided!
