‘Rise of the Nones’ is topic of Monday’s LACI lecture

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

All are invited to join us for the Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture this Monday, March 3, as David Gutterman, associate professor of politics at Willamette University, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Gutterman will speak on the topic “Believe it or Not: The Rise of the Nones and the Future of Religion in the United States.” During the last 20 years there has been a dramatic rise in the percentage of religiously unaffiliated citizens in the U.S. In this lecture, Gutterman will discuss who the “nones” are, what they believe, and what the rise of the “nones” suggests about the future of religion and politics in this country.

The same session is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Questions? Contact Paul Otto at ext. 2676 or potto@georgefox.edu.

Less than three weeks to housing selection

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Housing selection for the 2014-15 academic year will begin in just under three weeks, on March 17. Now is the time to be thinking about the following questions:

1. Who do you want to live with? Group sizes can range from 2-6 people. Please refer to the “How to Choose a Roommate” resource on the Housing and Residence Life website.

2.Where do you want to live? The size of your group will determine what housing options are available.

3. Have you paid your $150 housing deposit? To participate in housing selection each student will need to pay a housing deposit to Student Accounts by 5 p.m. on March 20. Students asked to live with an RA will also need to pay this deposit to secure their spot in housing.

Additional details regarding housing selection are posted on the Housing and Residence Life website.

Empty Bowls fundraiser on March 7 benefits Doug Campbell

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

For the fourth time in the last 12 years, the university is hosting an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser – this time to benefit longtime art professor Doug Campbell as he continues to recover from a November 2012 stroke.

Join us Friday, March 7, for an “Empty Bowls” dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Klages Dining Hall. For $12, attendees will receive a meal in a handmade ceramic bowl created by students, alumni, faculty members and guest professional artists. The cost is $10 per person for families of four or more. Sponsoring the event are Bob’s Red Mill, Newberg Bakery and food service provider Bon Appetit.

To prepare, 40 students, alumni, professors and professional and amateur artists from all over the region gathered for a “throw-a-thon” in George Fox’s ceramics lab last November. In all, about 2,200 bowls were created, according to event organizer Mark Terry.

To learn more about the dinner or watch a video about the event, visit georgefox.edu/empty-bowls.
