Join us for a ‘1965 Throwback Lunch’ tomorrow in Klages

Monday, April 25th, 2016

For those of us who were not at George Fox in 1965 when Heacock Commons and the current dining room was built, have you ever wondered what one of the first meals might have been? Have you ever thought how much lunch might have cost? Have you ever heard of the “Quaker Inn Cafe”? If the answer to any of these is yes, join us tomorrow (Wednesday) for our “1965 Throwback Lunch” and you’ll discover what you missed 51 years ago!

We’ve rented a juke box spinning ’60s platters and will be featuring favorites like chicken a la king, bologna and egg salad sandwiches, spaghetti and meatballs, fruit cocktail and much, much more – all for the throwback price of $1.25 for all staff, faculty and commuters.

Bring your appetite and we’ll see you in Klages on Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Contact Denny Lawrence (dlawrence@georgefox.edu) or Lisa Miles (lmiles@georgefox.edu) if you have any questions.

Info on summer dining options on campus

Monday, April 25th, 2016

It will be an exciting summer as we open the new dining hall, Canyon Commons! This facility will feature a large dining hall area (seating up to 555), three conference/meeting rooms (holding from 80 to 90 each that can also be combined to create a larger space), the president’s dining room (seating up to 20), and an espresso cafe (seating up to 60).

In May, construction will also begin on the remodeling of the former dining hall, servery, kitchen and Cap and Gown Room into space for the College of Engineering, which means that the Bruin Den and Bruin Bites will be impacted. Following are important dates to keep in mind in terms of meal service venues for the summer:

  • Groovy Bruin Food Truck: Available adjacent to the library from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning on May 2 until the Bruin Den reopens (approximately June 13)
  • Canyon Commons Dining Hall: Days and hours will vary throughout the summer depending on the conference schedule.
  • Canyon Commons Espresso Cafe: We’re anticipating that the new café will be open for service beginning June 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday
  • Roberts Center/Villa Cafe: The last day of operation for the Roberts Center/Villa Cafe will be Friday, May 27.
  • Bruin Den: Closed from May 2 to approximately June 13, after which it will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday

Thank you for your flexibility, patience and understanding as we transition to a new facility! Questions regarding food service can be directed to Denny Lawrence (dlawrenc@georgefox.edu), resident district manager with Bon Appetit Management Company, or Brad Lau (blau@georgefox.edu), vice president for student life.

Lost: Red soft-sided case with jumper cables and first aid items

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

Left in George Fox van #16 (we’re pretty sure): A red soft-sided case with jumper cables, flashers and first aid items. Have you seen it? If so, the women’s golf program would love to have it back. It has sentimental value. Please return to the main athletic office in Wheeler.

Thank you

Volunteers needed for OSAA choir competition May 5-7

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

Do you like free lunch? Are you a nice person? Do you like interacting with people? If any of these apply to you, we have a job for you!

Each year, the music department hosts the OSAA High School State Choir Competition, and we are currently needing volunteers to help keep the competition running smoothly. Jobs include door monitors, guides and assistants for some of the judges.

The competition is May 5-7, which is the Thursday, Friday and Saturday the week after graduation. Since it’s after school, this would be most ideal for students staying on campus for May Term or living nearby for the summer. Volunteers are needed all three days, and shifts go from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., from noon to 5 p.m., or all day.

Please contact Natalie Marquette at nmarquette12@georgefox.edu if you are interested!

Interested in singing gospel music in fall 2016?

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

The music department would like to extend an invitation to the undergraduate student body to perform gospel music with the university choir in a few special chapel services next year.

If you are interested in participating, you would attend a few rehearsals in the fall 2016 semester. No prior gospel or choir experience required. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please contact Danielle Warner, director of choral activities, at dwarner@georgefox.edu before the end of this semester.

Say thanks to someone who made a difference

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

Is there someone at George Fox who has made a difference in your college experience? Someone who ignited a spark that made you want to learn more than you thought you could, someone who walked alongside you during a difficult season, or a person who has been a mentor?

Take a moment to write an email, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor, RA, tutor, supervisor, or other influential person. Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life.

Students in Newberg can stop by the ARC or Bruin Den to pick up a blank card. Of course, one can make or buy one’s own card.

All are welcome to this Friday’s Baccalaureate Service

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

Voter registration and information

Sunday, April 24th, 2016

During this election year, we encourage students to get informed, involved and engaged locally, regionally and nationally! With the Oregon primaries rapidly approaching, there are some opportunities to be aware of.

First, on Monday, April 25, the nonpartisan League of Women Voters will be in the Bruin Den from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to get registered to vote.

Second, there will be two tables in the Bruin Den from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 (the last day to register for the Oregon primaries) for the purpose of creating space for those who would like to put out fliers regarding their local, regional or national candidates of choice.

Finally, the bulletin board outside of the Bruin Store is now available to post political posters. Students who would like to post something about a particular candidate must have the poster stamped by ASC (though this in no way implies endorsement of a particular candidate).

Please note that George Fox University and ASC do not endorse any particular candidate or political party, but we are simply providing opportunities to encourage civic engagement.
